Rumor again: Nintendo DS 2 dev kits in devs' hands photo

We expected a glorious spray of Nintendo DS successor rumors after hearing that it would be, allegedly, revealed at GDC 2010. But while we haven't been assaulted, it doesn't mean more rumors haven't been uttered. For example, French Web site Game Kult is reporting, via unnamed sources, that devs have their hands on successor kits.

That should sound familiar. The original "DS 2" rumor had as much in it, but we're guessing -- and really this is all a fun guessing game -- that Game Kult's sources are a little further east than the original stories' sources. Either way, we'll still have to play the waiting game. GDC needs to happen, like, now or something.

La nouvelle DS dès cette année? [Game Kult]

I'd believe it. My only complaint is with all the DS iterations it seems early. I mean it has been 6 years so I guess we're about due for a true successor.

Also: motion control. I'm calling it.

I sure hope the next handheld won't be called the DS 2.

They don't even have true DSi carts out yet, like they also rumored. Nor do they have anything worthwhile on DSiWare aside from a select few games. The DSi, as it currently stands, is a DS with a camera that does absolutely nothing useful. I bought into the thing on the hopes that Nintendo wouldn't fuck it up.

I was wrong.

Besides, Nintendo has done dual screen gaming to death. I think we all know it's time for quad screen gameplay. The QSi.

Knowing Nintendo, it's the DSi XL with motion controls.

Actually, yeah, I'm going with that second one.

In truth I would only feel half ripped off if they announce a successor. I upgraded from DS phat to DSi.It was a nice upgrade. Actually I don't feel that bad really. I probablly would if I upgraded from the lite to DSi.

I bet it's a larger focus on the dual screen thing.

Multitouch, smudge resistant, both screens take up the majority of the handheld space, speakers behind the screens.

Can be used as an e-book reader as well. Hey, an e-book reader that actually LOOKS like a book? Ain't that a novelty!

Honestly I hope there's never multitouch because I like using a stylus a lot more than my finger. Could you imagine playing Knights in the Nightmare with your fingers? D:

Nintendo's really pulling an Apple with the DS. New iterations keep coming out, meaning late adopters (like me) looking to pick it up when it's fully evolved and slightly cheaper keep waiting. I'm waiting for the 'definitive' DS (the XL?) and now they're probably going to be announcing a successor. Ugh.

I'm hoping that it's the next official entry in the Gameboy line. That second pillar is long overdue for an upgrade. Either way, I'll buy it. There aren't many guarantees of quality that are more certain than Nintendo's portables.

I don't think this is true with how well the DS sold the last quarter they can't be thinking of replacing it.

Why kill off a product that is trouncing its competition and coming top in sales charts on a weekly basis? This wouldn't make much sense unless they plan to launch a premium handheld and keep the current model on the market.

Damn you Nintendo can't you just go away for 2 years if you keep humiliating the competition youll be competing against yourself in a few years.

A bit soon, perhaps. Clearly Nintendo are still feeling the heat from iPhone/touch, esecially on a indie developer front. Another DS is going to have to do a lot to trump it or come close, especially after iPad, and a no doubt updated iPhone in June.

Probably going to be more GC tech rehashed guts at best. Better touch screen with possible pressure sensitivity. Built in flash drive to store games dlc etc. DS cart backwards compatible. Draconian Nintendo development practices will still cut it below iPhone though, IMO.

Otherwise the iPhone'll take over.

Stop fucking saying it's too soon! It isn't too soon. This is the best move Nintendo can be making at the moment. It's been over 5 years. The successors to the GBC and GBA came in less than 5 years. If they release new hardware now, that will put them in an even better position when compared to Sony, who is there real competition here. Yes, iPhone's are popular, but they aren't competing for gamer market share with the DS. And the iPad is completely irrelevant here. And considering the rumors we've been hearing, this thing will not be a small update to the DS. I have no fucking idea why some people are still acting like that's the case. And if you just bought the DSi, then that's your problem. It was obvious from 5 miles away that that thing would only be a gimmicky update of the DS lite. The fact that there is a new DS coming sometime in the future doesn't immediately make your purchase worthless though.

I just don't fucking get it when people complain about new hardware coming out. New SKUs of the same device can get kind of annoying, I'll admit, but when there is brand new hardware on the horizon, hardware that will come 6 years after it's predecessor, you don't bitch about it.

In regards to the story, I really hope this isn't the case. I'm getting rather tired of companies treating GDC as something OTHER than a Game Developers Conference. They have their E3 back, let's keep enthusiasts press OUT of this event since not a single site (www.gameindustry.biz and gamasutra excluded), even this one, covers the event for what it's organized for. This is a place for developers to be able to meet, mingle, share info, do seminars, hold interviews, and embrace game development without worrying about cunthole sites like Kotaku reporting informationthat REALLY, REALLY, REALLY isn't meant the for pandering putzes they appeal to. Now if Nintendo wants to announce an SDK for WiiWare and DSiWare, by god, do it. New dev tools, yeah. But let's leave the console warrior fodder at E3, where it belongs.

@Cowboy TTop,

If Nintendo was REALLY feeling the pressure on the indie dev side of things with iPhone, there is a REALLY simple solution. Release the bleeding SDK, with a profit sharing system. But Nintendo won't do that for fear of two things.

1. DSiWare would suddenly become respectable and thus cut into brick and mortar sales.

2. They would no longer be the best publisher on their system.

Fact of the matter is DSiWare is in bad shape, has a bad storefront, and Nintendo fears nongaming applications despite putting out many themselves. The concept of quality control as a barrier to keep others out is a joke simply because many indie games means a renewed flood of crap, but are we REALLY be spared that anyway with mobile phone developers flooding the store and Nintendo breaking apart DS games to sell piecemeal? Of course the real reason why Nintendo doesn't release an SDK is the exact reason they made an example of a recent australian.

Piracy. Nintendo seems deathly afraid of it so much that they claimed they lost well over $1.2 in revenue thanks to Gamecube piracy. Yes, Gamecube piracy. If an SDK kit went out, it would validate the fear. Although R4 has already been doing that nicely but still, ANARCHY!

God darn it! I JUST JUST JUST GOT THE DSi!!! In a counter argument, I hope AT LEAST the Dsi Metaphorically Is Capable of what DS 2 will do! Like the Transition from Ds lite to DSi. Hope they FIX DSiware and Release Some VC for Download!!! Hell! Transfer VC FROM Wii to DS Wouldn't hurt Either! Man I Used alot of money and time for this, so let me have my ventilation! >X[

You are totally right, even that I love the DS, the idea of the true DS succesor is really exciting for me. For that reason, I don't understand why many people asume that the next succesor could be just the same hardware with a small upgrade, after all, there are rumors that this possible new handheld could have a tegra 2 processor.

Lol, a bit of feather ruffling.

I know its been a few years since the original DS launch. Time has just flown a bit fast with all the fun I've been having across formats. Scatch previous statement.

I totally agree that GDC is becoming a platform for extras and press smoozing, when it should be focusing on the developers butting heads on ideas etc. Nintendo of all companies do not need GDC to make such an announcement, and we'd all pay just as much attention to it.

It probably won't happen since they call it successor to 'DS'. But why could it not be a single screen system. The clamshell design does protect the screens but it's hardly justified when the second screen is treated like another window on your desktop. There was never anything wrong with pressing a button to bring up the map.

I don't know why people act surprised that this happens. Upgrades happen, its just the last to cycles of Nintendo handhelds have accelerated the trend, but there were still four versions of the original Game Boy, too.

Game Boy > Game Boy Pocket > Game Boy Light > Game Boy Color

Game Boy Advance > Game Boy Advance SP > Game Boy Micro

DS > DS Lite > DSi > DSiLL

Nintendo isn't "pulling and Apple" they were doing well before Apple ever did. And really, we tend to have steady upgrades to portable devices more often than things we use at home. Its why our cell phones are so slim now and not the clunky ones we had in the 80s and 90s.

Just give me a Game Boy/GBA channel, aome modest internal memory, SD card compatibility, flash support (I wish) and video playback and I'll be there.

Names I'mm predicting,

Nintendo DS+, which is possible since Nintendo already adopted the + name convention with Wii Fit +, but is not likely due to it sounding like yet another edition of the first DS rather than a brand new system meant to succeed it.

Second guess:

Super Nintendo DS, which fits in with the naming convention Nintendo started with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and would be totally awesome, though I dont think putting "super" in the name of their system fits in with their new simplicity angle.

"Nintendo DT" is my guess, for dual touch. 'T' follows 'S' nicely, follows the branding, but sounds distinct enough not to cause confusion.

@Super Train Station H: I vote for 'Super DS'. Firstly, adding 'Super' would be awesome. Secondly, when the Wii is advertised on the telly, they don't call it "The Nintendo Wii", just "Wii".

I'd like better graphics, more memory (not at all for better emulation once jailbroken), bigger screens and an online store that isn't totally useless. Keep the buttons, ditch the camera, let it play DS carts with some sort of upscaling/anti-aliasing options.

I was about to buy a DSiXL but now Gamedaya mentions it, it is about time a successor was released. So I'm gonna hold out for that.

As for naming, They will probably go along with something hinting inclusive play or connectivity. Nintendo Wiinii hahaha...Wiinii. Hey, you all thought Wii was stupid at first...

@MesonW - I don't think they would go for something like that. It looks and sounds too sharp. S is smooth. T is hard.

@Xzyliac At this point, calling motion control is like calling it having a screen. I'll be absolutely shocked if it doesn't. Another certainty is that they'll do something that none of us will expect. What I'm interested in knowing is how they'll handle the touch screen. Will it remain resistive for using a stylus? Will they move to capacitive to support multi-touch? Will they do something new that gives us the best of both worlds?

My DS needs a replacement, the screen is all screwed up. I'd rather not buy a DSi right now just to find out that the "DS2" is going to be released later this year.

I'm concerned. The DS as it is still has quite a good amount of potential. Yeah it's been a bit over 5 years with practically the same hardware, at least until devs.Start taking advantage of the extra power of the DSi but a next DS so soon? I would welcome it, but it's not needed yet methinks; next year, maybe, but definitely not 2010.
