RUMOR: A Wii surprise coming? photo

Read the headline. It says "RUMOR". Read it again. RUMOR. Got it? OK, cool.

Now that we've got that out of the way, check out this post from Rumor Reporter:

Speaking with a friend of mine from Germany, who works for a very legitimate gaming production and publication, I can confirm that Nintendo truly does have something under their sleeves in the next few months. Of course, I can’t say more than that at the current moment, but now you’re glad that you checked the site other the weekend right? The secret lies within the Wii’s interface, most notably the channels. Something just might surprise you how far Nintendo can go in actually changing the infrastructure of their next-gen console.

Remember IGN’s interview with NOA’s Perrin Kaplan?

IGN: “Do we have any more surprises on the way before launch?”

Kaplan: “We do have a couple of other surprises. You know probably not as big as what you got today, but more details on a couple of different things that I think people… I think your folks will be very pleased about.”

These secrets are contained in upcoming channels to surface eventually - ones that haven’t been announced. Nintendo’s playing a waiting game on when to reveal this, but I cannot confirm anything other than that. Stay tuned on these developments.

In other developments, you might want to keep an eye on your Wii’s WiiConnect24 service leading up to this Christmas. Nintendo’s sending a nifty gift… a surprise.

That's the entire post. Once again, don't get your hopes too high. This is a RUMOR. I repeat, RUMOR. However, in the event that this isn't a RUMOR, I wonder what exactly this surprise could be. Anyone care to speculate?

The Christmas gift will be a downloadable "Princess Calendar" (PDF format) featuring everyone's favourite princesses, Peach and Zelda. And Daisy.

I think Nintendo is all secretive because they're going to blow their family name and release a PPV Porn channel. They realized that the porn industry is a multi-billion dollar business that has yet to be tapped in the gaming market.

So I should take this as unconfirmed?

Definitely unconfirmed. I only posted this up because I thought you guys might be interested in seeing it, but like I said, don't get your hopes too high. If you recall, this happened once before where someone claimed just prior to the Wii launch that Nintendo had one last big surprise to reveal. And then, at the launch of the system itself, Reggie confirmed there was no such thing.

a working channel other than online store would be nice...

doubt it will be anything amazing, just typical adding functionality updates like all the other systems are already doing

DeusPayne...

Excellent thought but 100% doubt it...even though they DID just send out an update to the Parental software coincedence?

PROBABLY!!!

Maybe it is reduced VC prices? Or a way to play online (even though they said the first game would be that Pokemon Revoluation thingy).

You think it is the internet channel or some sort of way to chatting online? Cause didn't Nintendo make all those patents on like WiiLife and all sorts of things and one of them pointed to something that seemed like chatting online with other users?

I remember hearing about that, Blindside. It was a patent for "iiM" I'm guessing instant messaging.

and I second the channel dedicated to the girl in the above photo!

I'm willing to bet it's a Mii Lounge, or perhaps an RSS feed of gaming sites.
According to the quote in the story, it'll make your folks very happy. Perhaps not gamers, but the media. By doing an RSS feed of wii.ign.com, nintendo gets to hype games to it's consumers and ign gets a ton of unique visitors to pimp to their advertisers. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal on both ends to me.
If not that, I'd definately take an online Mii Channel, allowing chat, emoticons, maybe minigames. It'd really be nice to have a way to interact with wii friends. Cause the message board system? Not so hot.

Wait, this came directly from Perrin Kaplan, but we're still calling it rumor? I mean, she didn't say what it was, but she said that SOMETHING exists that's on the way.

Please!!!!!!! NOOO!!!

I will have to hurt many people if MiiSpace is created.

I am glad I won't have to do that cause the chances of that SHOULD be slim!
Even though a good idea on Nintendo's side :X

I actually enjoy the pointless crap. Like when an MMO decorates the cities for the holidays, and puts in pointless quests to get "milk and cookies" or "trick or treating". 100% useless, but still fun to do. Maybe something like that is being done with the Miis.
xxeyes's Avatar
xxeyes at 11/30/2006 12:52
I bet it is more like a television channel -- the Nintendo channel. I don't know what they would play on it...but I definately think that is the next step.

As for the WiiConnect24...I'll be moving over the Christmas holidays. Anyone know if it is possible to get things over the WiiConnect24 network after they have been delivered?
BlindsideDork's Avatar
BlindsideDork at 11/30/2006 12:53
A free game would be nice, but unlikely...cuz what game would they give for free that would be HUGE like they are somewhat making it out to be?

Plus them talking about the infrastructure...no its not a game. Something to do with the channels, like a new gaming community channel?
Ishaan's Avatar
Ishaan at 11/30/2006 13:26
Well, Kaplan's comment on how it would "please your folks" is confusing the hell out me, but taking that into consideration, I'm leaning towards:

1. Some sort of education channel, since we've already seen educational games on the DS.

2. A separate channel for downloadable DS demos.

A) How would we find new people at this point?

B) What would happen to our existing friends?

I'm with Azgaurd, sorta. They might give us some free points for the VC, or more likely, a channel that lets you access Super Mario Bros. for free via VC. A freebie game would cost nothing to them and it would get people excited for VC.
BlindsideDork's Avatar
BlindsideDork at 11/30/2006 14:21
It probably isn't a free game...even though that would be a SWEET idea to get ppl all excited and into the VC.

I say its not a free game cause it says "The secret lies within the Wii’s interface, most notably the channels. Something just might surprise you how far Nintendo can go in actually changing the infrastructure of their next-gen console."

That looks more like a new channel and how it works...not just a free game.

Jelster's Avatar
Jelster at 11/30/2006 15:45
I agree a proper media channel would be a nice addition, music and movie downloads are possible too I guess considering how they lock content on the VC side already.

A chat/buddy system would also be good and may allow a bit more freedom with the WiiCodes.

The infrastructure quote does seem a little bigger than this though. I'll throw out Homebrew support (including free downloadable devkit) or Office like applications. They both seem a big step away from traditional console infrastructure.

I KNOW WHAT IT WILL BE! They will add physics to the Mii channel so that Miis can be thrown at other Miis when you pick them up.

Seriously, they need to do something with the Miis. I'd hate to see the concept wasted...it's hooked everyone that's had a chance to play with it. Avatars are addicting like crack!

plyr3005 at 11/30/2006 16:54
Hmm. I think it's going to be the release (for free, hopefully) of Supar Mario Bros, the unaltered version. Or wii interface themes, like rc_tech suggested. but, I hardly find it adult/parent friendly. If there's something parent friendly coming, I'm pretty sure it could be Atari 2600 games coming for the VC.

- Network connectivity? -Check-
Looks like all systems are go for VoIP...

I've read the responses and now change my mind.

I predict it will be iTunes. So you can get free radio and you can download songs for Wii points.

You heard it hear first folks. Remember that!

I'm willing to put money on it being Gaming television. the channels will let you watch what your friends are playing WHILE they are playing it. Parent bonus? They can watch what their kids are playing?

Tournaments and events would let 1000s of people watch the winners play live if that's what it is, and I've always wanted to turn on a game all night and listen to someone play it instead of listening to a movie all night. i hope this is what it is..

Azguard, you beat me to it.. I think iTunes streaming compatibiliy would be a likely new channel. As long as you have a PC or Mac sharing an iTunes library, why not let Wii browse that? I think Apple uses an open standard for the sharing protocol anyway, so they wouldn't necessarily need to have Apple's blessing to do this. I do this on my hacked Xbox already. Though a real partnership with Apple would be pretty smoking. My friends working there are highly interested in this whole Wii thing, but maybe that's just cause they are all geeks.

A pandora.com music channel would be cool.
The best would be the ability to stream media from computers that are on the same network.
That would be outrageous.

iTunes compatability would be alright.
Mic in Wiimote + a music store = Karaoke Channel?
The Japanese folk in the movies I watch love Karaoke.

I think based on what I read I think it will be a channel where you can change the Interface of the wii menu. Such as the colour, texture and maybe put a family photo in the background or something
