Rumor: A new DS is in the works [Update] photo

Evan Wilson, a Pacific Crest Securities analyst, has told GameSpot that a new DS redesign has been completed but it will be awhile before we see it. The new DS is thinner, has no GBA slot, has internal memory and larger screens. The rest of the GameSpot report goes on to talk about how well the gaming industry will do this holiday and that sports game did horrible this year compared to last year.

It's not surprising to see that Nintendo is making yet another redesign of one of their handhelds. After all, the Nintendo handhelds usually come in sets of three (GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance, SP and Micro). Since the DS Lites are continually dominating in sales, it's more than likely that the DS3 won't be out for quite sometime. It's a shame to see that Nintendo wants to take out GBA support though, (if this turns out to be true that is).

Would you DS owners be willing to upgrade to a better DS? Again?

[Thanks, Electro Lemon!]

[Update: Nintendo denies it but as it turns out, Surfer Girl broke the news weeks ago.]

Wouldn't they need to design games for the larger screen? What would they do with internal memory when that would lock previous DS owners out of features? Why would they remove the GBA slot? This doesn't sound like Nintendo at all to me and I don't really believe it.

If there is no GBA slot, it's not better.

I think a good question could be:

Those of us who haven't bought it... Are we now going to wait further?

Honestly, I'll probably buy whatever they throw at me. I did buy the Game Boy Micro, after all.

how is not allowing me to play GBA games better? Maybe if sega made Chu Chu Rocket for DS I'd think about the new model, but until then it's lite and chu chu rocket for life.

They'd have to elaborate more on the internal memory bit. Is it getting a hard drive or are we just adding the memory pack from the DS Browser in as a default thing?

The lack of a GBA slot would be painful, but when I stop and think about it I rarely use it nowadays as it is... Even still, I prefer using my SP for GBA games as it is.

Chu Chu Rocket FTW. I bought the GBA version at Target for $5 on clearance when I first got my Game Boy Advance. I still have that same copy, with god knows how many hours sunk into it.

It depends on the price, that would be the main factor to see if I would look into it or not. I bought the original DS, then upgraded only 7 months later... upgrading again would be troublesome if it was expensive.

I don't see the point to this since the DS is still selling like crazy everywhere. I would think the next hardware iteration would be the predecessor to the DS.

I think the only thing that would get me would be the harddrive, but I can't forsee Nintendo adding one until the next major hardware change.

As for someone who works with a DS 8 hours a day, i say good!
Well, that depends on what they want to do with it.
I don't mind how think it is, and making it thinner would not be a problem. But, it needs to be taller! it hurts my hands to use the dpad and the right trigger, my hands cramp after about 3 hours!

It needs to be more ergonomic, like the 360 controller.
Another cool thing for them to do, would be to have the stylus have buttons. Like have the ABXY buttons be on the stylus, that way i can use the stylus and the buttons at the same time.

The only way I can imagine this being true is if they're actually working on a successor to the DS, like something with more power and possibly added features (gyro control?). If this is true how he describes it, I don't think I'll get one. My DS Phat + my DS Lite are enough for me. Especially if I want to play some of my GBA games.

if the gba slot gets ditched, ill be pretty upset. gba games are the best thing to happen to gaming since the snes. it will be one step closer to ridding the world of yet another flawless concept. hey that reminds me... i need to check the status of the mother 3 translation project!!

I don't see the point of updating the Lite at the moment, seeing as it's selling so well. Unless this is one of the most long-term tip-offs ever, in which case the source should be burnt for heresy.

No GBA slot? Not cool. Thinner, larger screens and internal memory? Could be cool, but the DS Lite screen is already pretty damn bright, and I'm not sure if making it bigger would be better if the resolution stays the same.

My main gripe with the DS Lite is that the Start and Select buttons are too small. Could they possibly be any smaller? Why couldn't Nintendo leave them where they were, or at least leave the rectangular shape the same. Those little nubs are barely buttons at all, it's really a poor design decision.

Sounds good for me, I never use the GBA slot and larger screen + more memory is good for films.

It also means people who do use the gba slot can just kep their lites, and if they want another, nice and cheep.

@ freeman1: Taking away the GBA slot would probably make it easier to make the DS smaller, sleeker or whatever. And of course it would reduce production costs.

But what about those DS games that use the GBA slot for fancy add-ons? When will the madness end.

If the new DS looks like teh sex, then yes. I actually support them taking out the GBA slot, the more awesome DS stuff that comes out the less and less I use it. Having a bigger screen seems a little weird to me, seems like it would fuck some games up or would make everything look worse (since the resolution will either have to be stretched or the physical pixels would be larger).

I'll wait till it comes out then buy a price dropped DS lite. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

But then again, I haven't used my GBA slot on my current DS in an age, so depending on how sexy this new model is, I might actually throw down the cash on one.

If it is truly the DS2, meaning it's got all new internal hardware and will play DS1 and DS2 games (whatever they are), then of course I'll buy this. But if this is just a DS with larger screens and no GBA slot, you'd have to pay me to buy one.

My prediction that the real DS2 will be almost as powerful as the Wii, not that that's saying much. All the same, the real DS2 will be a first day purchase for me.

@freeman1:

easy, with internal memory plus the wifi that's been in the system since launch they could start a virtual (handheld) console system and make you rebuy the games in a digital format. not necessarily "make" but they could be like "holy shit! ninja five-o, tactics ogre and hay guyz, teh mother 3!1!! (since we don't have to manufacture anything for it)"

I still have my original GBA, and am considering a Game Boy Micro. I still have my original DS too, so if they decided to redesign it again, and they made it more ergonomic at a lower price, I would totally buy it.

I'm surprised this hasn't come up yet, but hopefully we'll see WPA support in the new DS... I don't use WEP in my home, so I don't play online DS games very much because of the hassle required to get it going.

I'd rather get both features, but I guess I'd willingly trade a GBA slot for WPA support.

Hmmm... If I didn't JUST trade in my DS for a DS Lite I'd say sure.

Although I don't really like the way my GBA games stick out of the DS Lite and my NES GBA SP could use some more lovin'...

This really worries me, and I won't likely be getting it if Nintendo drops GBA support. They would likely do that to push people into using the GBA/GB/GBC VC, which would be fine if we could also play the GBA games we already own. It doesn't sound like a DS2, it sounds more like a DS Micro to me...

This raises some questions if it's a consumer model. The memory would have to be used chiefly for media storage or WiiWare purchases; if games rely on it, their sales will suffer because the refresh would come towards the end of the DS life cycle. Extra memory wouldn't decrease load times to the extent it does on the PSP. A larger screen would highlight the low resolution.

However, this makes more sense if this is some sort of enterprise model. If a museum wanted to buy a few hundred DS units for virtual tours, onboard memory would be much easier to deal with than having to get a bunch of blank cards. They could receive the software via wifi. Larger screens would make sense for people trying to read text while walking, and GBA support would be unnecessary. Resolution would be less of an issue with static images.

But I wouldn't be terribly surprised at another iteration. Why not?
