Rumor: A new DS is in the works [Update] photo

Evan Wilson, a Pacific Crest Securities analyst, has told GameSpot that a new DS redesign has been completed but it will be awhile before we see it. The new DS is thinner, has no GBA slot, has internal memory and larger screens. The rest of the GameSpot report goes on to talk about how well the gaming industry will do this holiday and that sports game did horrible this year compared to last year.

It's not surprising to see that Nintendo is making yet another redesign of one of their handhelds. After all, the Nintendo handhelds usually come in sets of three (GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance, SP and Micro). Since the DS Lites are continually dominating in sales, it's more than likely that the DS3 won't be out for quite sometime. It's a shame to see that Nintendo wants to take out GBA support though, (if this turns out to be true that is).

Would you DS owners be willing to upgrade to a better DS? Again?

[Thanks, Electro Lemon!]

[Update: Nintendo denies it but as it turns out, Surfer Girl broke the news weeks ago.]

I'd pick up another one. I've never been disappointed with a Nintendo Handheld yet, and I nearly always have 2 of them on-hand in case my brother or a friend is over. I wouldn't mind a bigger screen and some internal memory, either.

Since I have an extended warranty on my DS at Best Buy, I will just go and swap it when and if a new model is released. All I will need to do most likely is pay another $20 or so to get a new warranty. As for the GBA slot, I'm not that upset about its departure. I still use a GBA to play GBA games since the image is a tad bigger than on the DS. It seems like a good move for Nintendo to continually improve upon their products. Now where's that Wii 2.0?

This would only work if this was in fact a next gen DS. If it had better then PSP graphics on 2 screens, built in browser and internal memory with the option of memory expansion and backward compatibility it would be a winner.

Why would it need to be a next gen DS? Nintendo always does 3 versions of their handhelds and there are only 2 DS models so far.

Doubt there'll be media support, considering N just backpedaled on Wii photo channel MP3 playback. WiiWare, plus serving the function of the GBA-slot browser memory pack.

But as long as we're phantasyzing... wonder what it'd add to pack in some motion detectors, maybe an IR reciever on the front end...

Everyone who is crying about a GBA slot needs to STFU because they have one already. Hell even my toaster has a GBA slot. EVERYTHING HAS A GBA SLOT. Jesus christ stop living in the past. Nintendo wants to push foward and I applaud them for doing so. So instead of "Whaaaaaa DS3 wont have Virtual Boy support. IM OUTRAGED!" how about thinking of the possibilities that the new revision could bring?
My DS phat is faded and withering away with a loose stylus slot, my DS Lite also has a loose stylus slot and is cracked in 3 places as well as a broken L button and a broken microphone(which completely stops me from being able to play just about 99% of games). Cooking Mama? Aww I have to blow into the mic to play? NEXT! Dementium requires feverish use of the L button for weapons/items? CRAP! Legend of Zelda:Phantom Hourglass requires you to yell like a lunatic into the mic? Now I'm pissed! A new DS would be awesome. If I can't get my hands on one of the Golden Zelda DS Lites that is. Forgive what seems to have to turned into me ranting. --Ramm

I'd only upgrade again if they make some really cool apps to use for the internal memory.

If this is just another revised DS, then I'll just stick with my Lite. I've got third party hardware to play homebrew and video/music, so anything Nintendo officially does I could do as well, if the homebrew community can whip it up.

Here's what I predict: Take out GBA slot, but with new internal memory GB, GBC and GBA games can be downloaded via Wii marketplace and put onto DS3. This way everyone is kept happy (and I get to play classic Gameboy games on the move again!)
