We don't just run with rumors every day, but Ars Technica's insider mole has scored with several recent tips, including the Xbox 360 HDMI inclusion bit, so we'll trust that this new one has some weight behind it as well.
The very same mole now tells Ars Technica about some new Sony holiday pricing. While most of the changes (80GB price reduction, a cheaper PS2) are in line with what we've been keeping our eyes on, their list does include a surprise: a 40GB PlayStation 3 priced at $399.99.
Here's the full list:
- 80GB PlayStation 3: $499.99
- 40GB PlayStation 3: $399.99
- Spider-Man 3 Blu-ray movie pack in with one, or both
- PlayStation 2: $99.99
If this information is correct, Sony could be set to make a huge splash this holiday. It's a bit difficult to wrap our heads around a third PS3 SKU, but I don't think anyone would disagree that this model would definitely be worth making and selling.
Keep in mind that there might be more "cuts" to this budget PS3. We've heard other rumblings about the omission of HDMI and Wi-Fi, which would take this $400 purchase down from a "given" to a "hmm" for potential buyers. Of course, none of this is confirmed yet.
Ars Technica says to keep an ear open for more news at this month's Tokyo Game Show. Hopefully then we'll be able to bump this rumor up to fact.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
any how. i'm stoked, because i know if this is the case, it will take the market over. it has better games coming out in my opinion.
i would take ff13 over mass effect any day of the weak.
i would take haze, and killzone over halo any day of the week.
i would take infamous, drakes adventure, ratchet and clank, metal gear, and all the other ps3 exclusives over any of the microsoft exclusives....
yeah, that last sentence made sense to me.
You speak like Sqaure Enix are infallable and can do no wrong. Such a shame you'd deny yourself good games, out of brand loyalty.
atari 2600, intellivision, atari 5200, nes, master system, genesis, 3d0, dreamcast, ps1, ps2, ps3. those are the only consoles i loved the most. which do i like the most out of that list? ps1, dreamcast, and ps3.
i'm a console fanboy. but only to the machines that deserve my loyalty, and that is not nintendo or microsoft.. it was sega, atari, intellivision, and sony...

i win the head in butt award today.. easily..
Also, it's not in HD, but for most that don't have an HD set they won't notice. I didn't until I got a new TV. Looks aren't everything though. If it's fun to play, then I'll do my best to play it, regardless of which system it's on.
Right now my GameFly Q has a dozen titles for the 360 and Wii that I am dying to play. I can honestly only name 1 or 2 that would make the cut if I owned a PS3.
Until the system has more games up my alley, then I won't be making the investment. No matter how many different Blu-Rays they try to shove down my throat. Why don't they take out the damn BR movie and drop the price even more? If they were competing directly with the 360 on price Microsoft would have a much tougher battle.
Oh, and removing quality attributes like HDMI (which the 360 now supports across all SKUs) and wifi (which the 360 lacks internally) would be a huge mistake. It'd be like shooting themselves in the foot.
Also if $399 is too much, I must tsk tsk. The Elite is $499 so as of now the 60gig PS3 is $50 more (In Canada). $399 is $100 more than the Wii....which is totally worth it. I haven't touched my Wii in about 4 months.........take that as you will for an easy set up!
LOL
Still doesn't have any games, they can make it as cheap as they want, but as long as Warhawk and Resistance are the only games to play on it, I could care less. The 40 GB PS3 is still equivalent to an Xbox Core if they strip all the goodies off of it.
I'm really looking forward to...God. I don't know what I'm looking forward to on the PS3. I just want one. A Blu-Ray player would be cute to have. You know what else is cute? If you google search "Blu-Ray" you'll get the official HD-DVD website on the sponsored links section. I don't know if any of you noticed that.
I guess Killzone is cool to check out, but still. I'm too poor. Hopefully this Christmas I can spend some money on myself.
Still, though, $100 (for 20 more GB) or $200 (for 20 less GB) is a lot of money...damn you, Sony! Pull a Steve Jobs and give me part of the difference back!
