Ooh, now this is exciting. Kotaku, using a number of sources including a sketch by an unnamed Chinese blogger who purportedly has a 3DS dev kit, has come up with an outline of expected features for the handheld. We only have a few days until the official reveal, sure, but this is too crazy not to talk about.
Those with a heart condition and anyone who can't handle taking gaming coverage with a fistful of salt, please leave the room. It's said that in addition to a standard d-pad, the 3DS will make full use of an analog stick (different from the PSP's control nub).
As shown in Kotaku's mock-up, it is also believed the basic design of the handheld will match the current DS' layout, with the top screen being much larger and where the 3D magic is rumored to take place. Additionally, a tilt sensor or accelerometer is expected as is an integrated 3D camera.
Even if only some of this ends up being true, Nintendo's unveiling of the 3DS on Tuesday will almost certainly "wow" me like few 3D devices before it. For whatever reason, eyewear-free 3D on a portable system seems like a perfect fit. Am I alone in thinking this?
Is This Nintendo's 3DS? [UPDATE] [Kotaku]

"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
**what about cutscenes that make use of both screens?**
I say that, but chances are I would buy it even if they were in portrait like the NGage.
As a glasses wearer, I'm hyped about no-glasses 3D tech. Please don't be cheesy!
I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of an issue for them to pare down what's displaying on the top screen to be in line with the bottom so that it would appear as it does currently on the DS for cutscenes. It might be weird looking though to have all the extra blank space on top, who knows.
I'm real pumped for this and can't wait to see what it'll look like playing it first hand.
Why would this need 2 joysticks? Its a DS, not a PSP. You have a touchscreen, so how many hands do you have? When you have two thumbs on the joysticks, where would you hold a stylus on top of that? Its like a GC controller, just minus that little nubby thing, but that is what the touchscreen is for on a DS.
I like the idea of having one big awesome 3D widescreen on the top, because it would be cool for watching movies. If they ever actually have a movie service on it, like they have NetFlix on the Wii. I'm in Canada though, so that wouldn't matter to me, but it still would be cool. This is just a mock-up, that could be fake, but didn't the early reports at GDC say that the gap between the two screens would be virtually gone? It certainly doesn't show that here. This is supposedly based off of dev kits, so obviously it wouldn't be the final deign, if its even real. Who knows?
...which they've been saying since day one.
It looks that it's wider than 16:9 screen.
Also, a proper analog stick would be very fucking stupid to put on a handheld. Kids would break it in a matter of days. With the exception of MGS Peacewalker and Monster Hunter, I've never used the analog nub on my PSP and even with those games I only used it because I was forced to. I dislike that it wasn't optional.
They'd actually have to make handhelds thicker to even make two analog sticks work. Look at your console controllers, folks. Think about it. Asking for two analog stick is asking to kill the form factor. I don't think Nintendo or Sony want to make a brick like the Turbo Express.
You want your dual analog - play a console game.
If it is as big as the XL, then hells yeah im getting this.
Also, 2 analogue sticks can stay on the consoles, thank you very much. I don't need 2 sticks on my handheld to actually enjoy it like it seems everyone else needs.
What the fuck do you need two analog sticks for when you have a touch screen?
I fail to see how a gimmick like 3D is going to move untis when the most popular games on the DS are more adult oriented educational titles. How will Brain Age type games benefit? 90% of game systems get purchased by adults.
If it's anyone in my age bracket, (30+) last thing I would think most people want is miniaturized eye strain and the grief of a parallax view 3D screen. I hold all praise or critical dissertation on this until Nintendo can prove this is a necessary component to gameplay.
Also while I'd prefer two analog stick, I only had one on my Dreamcast and never had a problem with it. Never stopped me from playing or enjoying any of my lovely FPSs.
So what? Current DS games that make use of the "cross screens" still look awful most the time anyway because they fail to take into account the huge piece of plastic barring our view between screens.
