Analysts, market research firms, we only like them when they say what we want them to say. So how seriously should we take them? Well, you or I may not take them seriously, but money-hungry shareholders sure do pay attention and that's why when someone actually has something positive to say about the (publicly) failed PlayStation 3, my little ears perk up. Here's the latest:
A Dublin-based market research firm says that the PlayStation 3 will eventually lead the new console race. The launch of the PS3 hasn’t been exactly an easy-going affair, but Research and Markets says that Sony’s videogame brand can still hold its own.
In an abstract of the study, “The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming,” the research firm says that the PS3 will enjoy an install base of 75 million consoles worldwide by 2010, outdoing the Xbox 360 and Wii.
See that? They said 75 million consoles sold by 2010. Insane right? Well, I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility. This thing is built for the long-term, remember?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Everyone needs a paperweight, some even like shiny ones!
haha, had to do it...I MIGHT get a PS3 in the future, if any good games besides Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and a few others come out.
/sarcasm
They just need to release games that make it worth buying.
A $600 video game console just doesn't have mass-market appeal. It's been tried before, and it's just too much when cheaper, comparable options exist. While it's strictly anecdotal, I've seen PS3s on store shelves each time I've gone out looking (a few times over the past couple weeks) -- this is still well within the timeframe where a console of the quantities Sony is putting out should be nigh impossible to find! Keep in mind that bleeding cash on Blu-Ray means that Sony is betting on being the market leader this time around.
Publishers are watching the PS3 falter a Christmas launch, and exclusives are slowly jumping ship. The more exclusives that jump ship, the less appealing the console is going to be to other publishers.
While I think the day of 70% market share is probably over for now, I do think that Sony is going to have a hard time convincing gamers to put down our consoles that already have 2nd and 3rd year good games when their 1st batch of potential ripens.
25 million units a year? What crack are they smoking?
What's the true remedy for this? As it was said, games. Hardware and software are just a part of the equation. It's the games that make it all successful (obviously). In which they better start working their asses on over-time to throw out some good games. You know though, I bet 100$ if they remade FF7 it would get some profit from all the annoying fan-boys/girls.
The only good news I see is that the Blu-ray drive is the most expensive component, and that price on it will probably drop drasticly in a short time. A $200 drop in a few years isn't unrealistic. That's what happens when you build a machine around the law of diminishing returns. Hey, how long did it take the 3DO to get to $100? Of course, it didn't do the 3DO any good, and the 360 offers pretty much the same quality or better for less money, and always will.
The PS3 isn't going to fail like the 3DO, but 75 million by 2010 isn't going to happen, even with killer games and with the 360 doing so well.
75 MILLION? I'm pictured Dr. Evil when I heard that.
Analyst:'We predict that the Sony Playstation 3 will sell... seventy-five.. MEEEEELLION CONSOLES by two THOUUUSAND and ten'.
dude: 'why?'
Analyst: 'Because zOMG ARE YOU DOUBTING THE CONSOLE'S POWAH?'
dude: 'No, I'm sure its powerful, but right now nobody wants one. And who cares about blu-ray? Just because its got a larger capacity doesn't mean the movies will even need that much capacity. Just because its got blu-ray in it doesn't make in a guaranteed success.'
Analyst: 'BUT WE ARE PROFESSIONALS AT THIS!'
dude: '2010? You really want to venture that far out? I'd trust a prophetic hobo more than you'
when i have enough spare money, a 1080p capable screen, and when they give us some decent games, and they fix all the things like downloads whilst playing that kinda junk which will probably be the end of this year or the end of next
