Romero: Zenimax id buyout is 'disgusting' photo

Well, it didn't take him long. Outspoken game designer and former id man John Romero has stuck his oar into the Zenimax/id buyout situation, sharing only one adjective on the idea of Bethesda's parent company owning the famous Doom studio: Disgusting.

Romero did what most people seem to be doing these days, and rushed to Twitter in order to vocalize his thoughts, stating simply: "ZENIMAX??????? Disgusting."

Of course, Romero isn't a man who leaves things at one statement, and continued voicing his disgust by claiming that "Fallout 3 bought Doom" in a later Tweet. I had no idea that game concepts could buy anything, but apparently they can.

I've never really heard of Zenimax doing anything particularly evil, so one has no idea what Romero's issue could be. Still, the design "legend" doesn't seem to like very many people at all in this industry, so it's likely that id could have been bought by any company and illicited the same reaction.

Do you think it's "disgusting" that Fallout 3 bought Doom, or are you still trying to wrap your mind around the idea of the videogames themselves staging corporate takeovers of each other?

Seems to me his company (Ionstorm)? was bought out by Eidos...that went well.

Which version of Doom did Fallout 3 buy? I'm wondering if it's into the same kind of doom as me.

I remember John Romero. I think he was relevant for a few years.

Man, I used to always like Romero. He was quirky and out there even though he made bad games. If you read "Masters of Doom", you get a unique side of him. But cmon man, be mature about this.

Sounds like a bit of an immature, kneejerk reaction from him. Not like it matters or anything. His relevancy found the door years ago.

Fallout 3 had a ton of flaws, but to be honest, it's one of my favorite RPGs ever and my game of the year for last year. Bethesda may have a lot of engine issues, but they make fucking good games. id may not have released a game in years, but they are also fucking good developers, although usually with better engines than games themselves. They may not cooperate much at all, but I will personally cry manly tears of the next Elder Scrolls title is on iDTech5.

What would be his reaction if EA had purchased I'd instead, Bethesda seems to have creative control and freedom to remain true to their artistic intregrity.if you're gonna be bought, it looks like zenimax is the lesser of all the evils.

Yes, it's totally disgusting that the superior-in-every-way Fallout 3 bought the yeah-it-sort-of-started-the-FPS-genre-but-not-really-and-what-has-it-done-for-me-lately Doom. Of course Fallout 3 can buy things. It just did!

Weird. I think Bethesda has done a great job with their past games and community relationship.

For one, it's better to have "Fallout 3 buy Doom" than letting EA do that; and second, to be honest, I'm quite curious to see what's going to happen or what projects are going to be developed.

"Fallout 3 bought Doom"

Thats right John. Fallout 3, a game superior to Doom (and every iteration of Doom ever created) bought Doom.

When was the last time John was relevant?

Maybe Carmack can help Bethesda out with their graphics technology. The characters in ALL of the Bethesda games look completely retarded and they move terribly. Plus their "improved" 3rd person camera is still as useless as ever. How they've managed to make their characters seem to look and animate WORSE than Morrowind I can't imagine. Maybe it's just that the rendering has gotten better, but it's still impressive.

Welcome to 2009, guys. Try to fucking catch up.

And Romero can suck it down, he's responsible for one of the most "disgusting" games ever created and has about as much room to talk on this subject as Dan Quayle does on spelling.

You know what, I don't a shit who Romero thinks he is but he should be damn happy that id was bought by a company that just kept it in tact and all games still in development.

There a dozen other companies that could have bought them out and screwed them over royally. And most of those companies don't even make good games.

Count your blessings dumbass.

Fuck John Romero. Inflated Ego Dev riding on the back of the mastermind of engine design John Carmack. He may have had a flicker of brilliance at id but I haven't seen a game worth even one of my bowel movements come from his mind since. And why does Tom hall seem to follow him everywherre? Tom should be workign on Anachronox 2.

Romero may have been invovled in something good but the decisions didn't come from him.

Anyway regarding the news of Zenimax getting id, I can only jump for joy. Because it should mean that Activision will NOT be publishing Rage! Hallelujah, thank you Jesus, Yaweh, and Mohammad, my prayers have been answered. I was afraid I'd have to give Activision some more money when that came out, but now I won't have to worry about that.

Can't wait for the news that Activision sells off Blizzard or Blizzard's talent leaves to make another company. That won't be for a couple of years though :(.

Also: I've heard Zenimax got Carmack with some Ferrari armor. True story!

I can't imagine anything bad coming out of this deal, especially given the higher possibility for a little cross-pollination between id and Bethesda. As other commenters have said, if id could hook Bethesda up with some better engine tech for their new Fallout or Elder Scrolls game that would be fantastic.

You're all getting the wrong end of the stick. Bethesda + iD sounds good, I love Doom and I love Fallout so I'm down with that coupling BUT ZeniMax - as opposed to Bethesda - are actually not a very nice company. If you check out their history ZeniMax was founded as an umbrella company by Weaver (founder of Bethesda) in partnership with a shady guy called Altman - a moneyman, not a gamer - who no one else wanted to do business with due to his being involved in the BCI scandal.

Unfortunately for Weaver, it turned out everyone was right, Altman turned out to be a complete wanker. He got Weaver to sign his personal stock over to the company for 'financing' then stitched him up and took his company. ZeniMax are a pretty standard evil corporation I'd say, so I can see why Carmack would prefer iD not to be under their wing
