We're not sure if App Store mega developer ngmoco's unique free-to-play model is making the waves the studio hopes it is. But we do know that the recent move broke the original plans for Rolando 3. Speaking to IGN, co-founder Neil Young said the next Rolando wasn't meant to be a free-to-play game and was cancelled because of it.
"When we made the decision to go free-to-play," Young said, "we said to ourselves, 'Look -- if we can't make the game free-to-play, we're not going to release it.' And Rolando 3 as it was envisioned at that time was not a free-to-play product. So we've just taken the time to try to figure out how to do that franchise really effectively in free-to-play space."

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
The Gamasutra piece
The piracy reason doesn't really make sense though.
As many commenters on Touch Arcade have pointed out, studies show only 10-15% of all iTouch/iPhone devices are jailbroken. If approximately 85% of your market cannot obtain the game illegally, you don't need to worry.
I think it's just an excuse to nickel and dime: Eliminate Pro is a really sleazy example. The way the market is going, you basically will have to pay an "MMO style subscription fee" to play any game ever made.
I'm up to rank 11, have 3 guns and 2 suits of armour and haven't paid a penny. It's a blast.
Because if you adore the game, you're goaded into constantly paying for it.
I'd rather just fork over $5-10, and be able to play it when I want.
The piracy rate for apps is 80-90%; it seems that the jailbroken devices make up a huge portion of the gaming audience on the iPhone/touch
