Rocksteady Studios doesn’t seem opposed to the idea of crafting a follow-up to Batman: Arkham Asylum. Go figure, right?
Speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine, studio co-owner and co-founder Sefton Hill expanded the company response to the question we’ve been asking since finishing the latest Batman videogame: will there be a sequel?
“I’m not really allowed to comment on that,” he said in the latest issue of the magazine (spotted by Goonline), “but there are definitely lots of exciting stories to tell in Batman’s world, and I can say that we’re really privileged to work on it, and excited about future possibilities.”
Last month, Batman: AA lead narrative designer Paul Crocker barely addressed this same question in an interview, stating the studio just wanted to see if people who purchased the critically-lauded title enjoyed it.
For the record, we’re all for another Batman game. If a sequel does happen, though, we’d like to see Crazy Quilt enter the fold. Nothing says "foe" better than a guy who can only see in psychedelic colors.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Now get to work Rocksteady.
More people should also go back and play their previous title "Urban Chaos Riot Response". It's an awesome and incredibly overlooked and underrated gem.
Something are made to be franchises and as long as the franchis stays fresh it's okay.
Guitar Hero is one of those examples. When GH suffers it's from failure to stay fresh and fun. Hardware being shoveled onto the shelves, spin-offs adding nothing to the game, etc. However when you actually tighten up your existing base and try to do interesting things (a la GH2 and GH5) a franchise isn't a bad thing.
I mean if you had a huge expansive and already set universe like Batman surely you'd be excited to take another crack at it too. Especially had you played Arkham Asylum. They literally put this entire universe of heroes and villains that you don't see in the game right in front of your face.
Fair enough.
Reminds me a bit of my desire to play a No More Heroes sequel. Except there is no set universe for that franchise to pull from, just the depths of the internet.
To be honest, I only criticise Batman because it is right in front of me. I would criticise any article that suggests franchising a "new" IP only two months after the original was released. Too many 'original' successful games are suffering from developers and publishers wanting to turn them into franchises immediately, leading me to skepticism of any such attempt at making a series. The whole situation reminds me of the 2006 elections, where immediately after they were completed we began seeing two year campaigns for the 2008 elections in a never ending parade of hype, politics, and advertising. I am seeing the 2008 campaing play out before me in the game industry, which just doesn't sit right with me.
Dude campaigning only stops for 6 months max. You know how much money you need in order to campaign for any political office?
Shit the Republican nominees are campaigning for president right now and Fox News has a timer. Of course no Democrat is gonna run against Obama though.
But if you wanna use that example (which is a little overblown but whatever) then I'd say this: that's how you plan. When you know for sure what you've got can be expanded, and you truly love what you do and the product you put out, you don't stop. Same thing with politics. You know what you want to run for office then you get started ASAP and you don't stop.
I wonder if Rocksteady would consider developing the movie tie in for Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie? The one qualm I had with Arkham Asylum was the art direction, but being tied in with one of Nolan's movies would correct that.
Maybe the republican nominees are campaigning for president right now, but quite frankly, they are not a significant factor compared to the post-2006 campaigns for 2008.
And I believe you missed part of the point - the 2008 campaign trail was a political nightmare that I sincerely hope the United States never has to suffer through again. I was simply sick of politics by the time it was over from having it stuffed in my face on a daily basis for over a year. If that's what happens to gaming, then I will be sick of the games I love before they even come out. It does not seem like a viable marketting stategy.
