As we’ve been told by Rockstar Games, the next downloadable installment for Grand Theft Auto IV won’t be short on content. In addition to having a new narrative for players to explore, ‘The Ballad of Gay Tony’ will introduce new vehicles, new tunes and even new television anime ‘toons. The above is an example, pulled from the expansion.
The show is called Princess Robot Bubblegum. In Rockstar fashion, it serves as a scrap of satire that beats on anime as hard as we’ve been smacking GTA hookers with baseball bats all of these years. It’s hilarious and worth the scan, but probably not something you want your boss to see you hitting up at work -- the bikini and phallus-walking stick portions are a bit intense in addition to other things.
I already wasted enough time watching my character watch tv, I don't need to do it again just to watch him watch anime satire. I already watch enough cheesy anime myself.
The Ghost in the Shell show is amazing, the movie is ehhh. Evangelion is fun though, cool mechs and pretty ladies. There's also all that thought out, deep, referential, and religious symbolism but who cares. If this is how the new TV show stuff is, I'll be sure to watch it on YouTube.
The way you feel about anime after seeing this is how most of us see sports games. It's a slightly less insulting version of condescension and lack of interest rolled into one feeling.
This sort of humour is why I stopped enjoying GTA after I turned 12 or so. It's not that I find it insulting to my tastes or that it's beneath me but it's like listening a Latino do stand-up; they pick a form of humour I don't care for and then murder it from every angle possible.
I loved the bit, but pigeonholing an entire medium because a small amount of them are like the above parody is one of the most absurd statements you can possibly make.
But that's two people. I expected Fanboy Friday material here and my post is probably the closest thing to a "Fuck Rockstar for picking on anime" response.
meh... I watch to much anime for my own good, and didn't that funny, just because most of the anime watch isn't like this at all. But just saying I love what Conan did to the anime dub of Blood.
Wow, Rockstar really knocked it out of the park with this unsubtle satire! Will their comedic invention never cease? It's funny 'cause it's true, guys!
Hell, I like anime (well, not most of it, but I think that goes for any medium when you have decent taste - just like I don't like most video games), and I liked this clip. Anybody who gets offended by it can't take a joke, and anybody who really thinks all anime is like this needs to take off the blindfold.
I like that if this was an anime ripping on games for being generic masculine power fantasies certain people on here who were slamming anime would leap to video game defence.
I wanted to watch that vid when I saw the vomiting blue thing, but as soon as that cotton commercial came on I closed the window.
I swear if I ever find the person that sung that STUPID freakin' song...
Trust me, wouldn't be pretty.
Anyways, pretty funny stuff. Thing I love about Rockstar is that they make fun of everything but themselves, like Family Guy or South Park.
I love anime, but I'm not so blind to not realise it's got some played out genres and lowest common denominator programs. That was a great take on anything Go Nagai has created.
From my experience, the majority of anime is pretty much as described, my latest creepy encounter with this side of anime was with an anime called "Kämpfer" (german for soldier, Heil to the former-nazi-allies catching up with the old times.)
It's about a guy who wakes up and notices he's not a big-breasted girl who has to fight other transsexuals with equally increased proportions. That's pure art to some people? perhaps, but it's also more ridiculous than anything rockstar can come up with.
Making fun of the west is also pretty much a national-passtime in most of asia, mocking how our "comic book" heroes are all "muscular and gay" because they are muscular, also, bald, they consider everything bald to be gay (the irony eh?).
My individual position is: all these cultures suck, anime/comic/movie/western/asian/etc.. they are all equally biased, prejudicial, alienated and sad. And there are real-people being crumpled in the middle of these cultures that do incredible genious work.. stuff like: Paranoia Agent, Transmetropolitan, Death Note, Full Throttle, GTA, Chihiro, Oldboy, Nobody Knows.. so on. Most of which, the creators don't give a damm about anime, movies, western, asian, etc.. they just want to tell stories, to be storytellers..
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Sweeping generalizations for the loss.
@SovietMudkipz: No.
Almost.
And I fucking came with this trailer.
Still won't persuade me to buy GTA4:BoGT, but eh.
Now if there was an entire 26 episode series of it on the other hand...
And the way I see Baseball is like how I watch One Outs the anime.......

Sorry, where?
Samit, Soviet.

Haha, true.
More people need to see Azumanga Daioh.
Also needs more moe
Seems appropriate for these comments.
@ Carl Sagan
Citizen Kane of anime?
LOL.
But if this is how Americans satire anime, I can't imagine how the Japanese satire American comic books and cartoons.
It's a fair okay parody in it's all non-subtlety.
