Rockstar officially appeals the Manhunt 2 banning photo

It's been a while since we ran anything on this matter, but news has now surfaced that Rockstar Games made an official plea with the Video Appeals Committee, hoping to overturn the BBFC's banning of Manhunt 2 in Britain. As you all know by now, Manhunt 2 went unrated in the UK, singled out for its violent overtones. Many agreed it was unfair and now Rockstar wishes to confirm it by seeing the title hit British shelves in spite of the BBFC's wishes.

If Rockstar's appeal succeeds with the VAC, the game will finally be made legal to purchase, meaning we can decide for ourselves whether or not we're emotionally mature enough to handle the brutality of this controversial game. I would personally like to wish Rockstar Games the best of luck with its appeal -- not because I really care to play a sequel to a game I didn't like, but because it will be a victory for videogames as a legitimate entertainment medium, and for adults as responsible consumers who are able to discern what they can and cannot buy.

The hearing's official date is yet to be announced, but we shall keep you posted.

This case could actually take long enough to finish the M-rated version!

Yeah, so that's what happens when you click "add comment" without actually writing anything. What I was going to say was, what happens if it gets re-rated as 18? Presumably Sony has no objections (GTA, etc), but what about Nintendo? Do they object to the 18 rating in the same way as AO? It'll be the ultimate irony if the game does get rated in the end and STILL doesn't make it to Wii..

OrangeGoblin: There was no way in Hell this game would ever had made the British 15 rating. Nintendo would have had to have known this before it originally promised to bring it out on Wii, so if they object it on the basis of an 18 rating, it would show a huge lack of professional intelligence on N's part.

A fair point. But has there ever been an 18 on a Nintendo console?

This is expected news, but still good news.

It's still hard to believe that this whole ridiculous scenario is real, it is the 21st century right? Hopefully one day we can all laugh at this.

I just want to laugh because, while I want this game to come out based on principle, I don't think it looks all that great. I might rent it, or I might not play it at all, but I almost certainly wouldn't buy it.

@dean

It's not that great. I beat the original Manhunt, and I enjoyed it, but it's not the greatest thing since sliced bread. It IS very, very violent.

I actually believe it DOES deserve an Adults Only rating, but it doesn't deserve a ban. The screenshots don't do it justice.

Forgetting the whole debate about whetehr this game should or shouldn't come out, it looks like shit. And if it's anything like the first one, it'll play like shit too. But what Nintendo should do, is let the game come out with an 18 rating and let the masses decide. At the end of the day, the money will talk loudest.

In theory this is a good idea, but the Appeal Board is made up of predominantly women over the age of 70. It won't get through.

I'm surprised it hasn't already been "leaked" out onto the net, are there any demos or anything floating around so we can actually see what the game is like?

One day, we'll look back at today and laugh at how stupid the world was, trying to stand against the progress of video games. We will see game studios as the Hollywoods of the future, only much greater and far reaching. Those who oppose games will either be dead or on the World's Most Wanted List. It will be a glorious day when Manhunt 7 comes out.
