Rockstar may leave Take-Two for bigger and better things photo

Analyst Michael Pachter talked to Shacknews today and told them that Rockstar North may decide to break away from Take-Two Interactive when their contracts expire February 2009. Patcher believes that after EA paid over $800 million for the Pandemic and BioWare deal, Rockstar North wants to see what would happen to them if they split off from Take-Two.

So if this goes down, how much do you think companies would pay to get Rockstar? GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas are all in the top 20 console games of all time and everyone is going bananas over anything they can see from GTA IV. Can you just imagine the bidding war Sony and Microsoft would have over them if they try and snatch Rockstar?

This may potentially be HUGE for whoever gets them. Sony better start throwing some Zeros there way if they want a fighting chance.

Guh. I hate Rockstar. I'd like it if nobody bought them and they just dissolved... But that's just wishful thinking. I have better things to do with my time then curb stomp a hooker to death for a few bucks.

Would Rockstar be willing to be purchased by Microsoft though? Seems like there would be too much creative control. I could see them sexing it up with Sony though.

Regardless of who buys it... it's a sure bet the price paid will be no less than a billion.

Rockstar should bust a Bungie and go it alone.

This would be a wise move for Sony indeed.

Ultimately whoever is the highest bidder needs to let them retain full artistic control over their work. You don't buy an award winning show dog then neuter him.

with Rockstar's success and the rapid growth of the VG industry, i wouldn't be the least bit surprised if any corp. looking to break into the biz tried to pick them up, god knows even google has enough money to put up a fight for them if they wanted too. not that i'm expecting them to get involved lol

@ brainderailment : idk if its because things might be a little different release-date-wise across the pond but in the US so many high profile games are expected next year alone on the 360, im just curious as to how u came to believe Microsoft might not care?

Can you imagine just how shitty GTA 5 will be if they are bought by EA, Microsoft or Sony? No offense, but those companies have a tendancy of really watering down the content of the games released from the companies they buy out, and/or just plain making them crappier than they would have been. Point and Case C&C Generals, Halo (would have been a ton better, and out on pc), and well, just look at ps3 ..... 'nuff said.
I think they are doing so well now, because of the stuff they get away with from being at Take-Two. But that's just me, at 3:30am, probably not making much sense.

Probably Microsoft, they already paid for exlusive content 50 million bucks...

please keep rockstar an independent party instead going 'exclusive' :(

If they split Microsoft will buy them. They wrangled exclusive rights away from Sony and I think they'd be willing to steal them outright.

If there is any company with deep enough pockets and enough lawyers to handle future (read: inevitable) suits, it's the 'Soft.

FAKE HEADLINE!

This headline leaves out the fact that this is just a guess by Michael Pachter.

Sure it's in the first sentence, but the comments here show that barely any of you read that far.

Don't care. Everything R* has done so far has pretty much been "meh" to me. GTA series and L.A. Noire look like the same thing with different names to me and I didn't have much fun in the games except in the occasional summon a tank and see how much I can destroy or if I could jump over a building. Unless they really do something new and worthwhile with GTA IV, I don't see a reason to buy it.

Like previously stated, it has to someone with legal money to spend like water, and they have to have a full supply of Jack-Off, the Thompson Miracle Cure...

Rockstar North belongs to Rockstar Games....Don't you mean Rockstar Games and not just one of their studios?

Good, maybe whoever bought them would force them to stop making controversial games for controversy’s sake (*cough* Manhunt 2 *cough* State of Emergency).

I wonder if Jack Thompson would still keep hating Take Two itself. It would be funny if a new GTA was coming out from a different publisher and Thompson just kept attacking Take Two.

Sony needs them. Their other 15 exclusive studios still don't seem to be enough to put the PS3 in the lead. ;)
