Rockstar Vancouver is working on the next installment of the Max Payne series for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Set for Winter 2009, the next game in the franchise will feature a retired Max, more cynical and downtrodden than ever before.
"Developed by Rockstar Vancouver, Max Payne 3 tells the story of a retired police detective embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence," states Rockstar. "The latest installment delivers more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love, while moving the story of Max in a new direction."
"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," says Rockstar founder Sam Houser. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."
The new game sees Max retired and moved away from New York, but he is double-crossed and left stranded in a "city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out."
Max Payne = One really unlucky bastard.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

BTW Did Mona survive 2nd game or not? It was a while ago, but I remeber that after completing the game in last comic-like part police officer says "we have one survivor". However, after completing it at hardest difficulty level its "two survivors". Just checked wikipedia and it's the same thing in there.
So ... which one is cannon, anyone knows?
Get off Max's lawn! *cha-chik*
Now I wonder about that myself. To make you work harder for the true ending sounds a lot better then going with the easier ending...though, if you think about it, his life wouldn't be horrible enough if she survived. Maybe he witnesses an orphanage exploding? That or his favorite show was cancelled.
The original "Max Payne" is one of my top 5 games of all time. I didn't think they'd do a third one, and I'll admit that I'm a bit concerned that it's not being handled my the same team that did the first two.
But, still -- OH ... MY ... GOD ...!!!
L O L
FIXED ;)
all we need now is a new Hitman.
I hope they stick with the original max voice actor, then again by the looks of 'Old Max' in that promo shot they may as well just bring in David Hayter.
Roll on winter.
This is brilliant, first American Mcgee's Alice 2 and now Max Payne 3?
This makes me warm in my pants.
Poor Max, always being double crossed and stuff.
He's looking very Nico Bellic-ish these days.
