Rockstar announces Max Payne 3 photo

Rockstar Vancouver is working on the next installment of the Max Payne series for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Set for Winter 2009, the next game in the franchise will feature a retired Max, more cynical and downtrodden than ever before.

"Developed by Rockstar Vancouver, Max Payne 3 tells the story of a retired police detective embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence," states Rockstar. "The latest installment delivers more of the classic elements and hyper-intense action that fans have come to love, while moving the story of Max in a new direction."

"We're starting a new chapter of Max's life with this game," says Rockstar founder Sam Houser. "This is Max as we've never seen him before, a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation."

The new game sees Max retired and moved away from New York, but he is double-crossed and left stranded in a "city full of violence and bloodshed, using his weapons and instincts in a desperate search for the truth and a way out."

Max Payne = One really unlucky bastard.

Now this is something to look forward to. The first two told a really awesome story while still making you feel pretty badass. I'm sure this will do the same.

Great.

BTW Did Mona survive 2nd game or not? It was a while ago, but I remeber that after completing the game in last comic-like part police officer says "we have one survivor". However, after completing it at hardest difficulty level its "two survivors". Just checked wikipedia and it's the same thing in there.

So ... which one is cannon, anyone knows?

Fantastic news, though it's a pity Remedy (the original devs) aren't involved. Also looks worryingly Condemned-ish based on this pic and statement. Still hyped though.

Woo, WOOO, WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Loved the last two, hopefully it will come with more of rockstars new found class. (not to say that it wasnt classy before) I just hope they find a way to make it better than stranglehold and wanted.

#1 price for telling me the same news 3 times in one post. Other than that I'm in for a new Max Payne.

Whoa, cool. Didn't see this one coming. I wonder how he'll get involved with crime without being a detective. Might be interesting.

Get off Max's lawn! *cha-chik*

@Peteru

Now I wonder about that myself. To make you work harder for the true ending sounds a lot better then going with the easier ending...though, if you think about it, his life wouldn't be horrible enough if she survived. Maybe he witnesses an orphanage exploding? That or his favorite show was cancelled.

Wait a minute, isn't it supposed to go that in the 3rd one the brother of the some random guy he killed in the first one comes in and sends him around the city to stop bombs, but all as a plot to get away with some other nefarious plan? And then in the 4th installment, we see Max years later, going bald, wearing unkempt facial hair, and dealing with all new adversaries not at all tied to his past relationships?

OH ... MY ... GOD ...!!!

The original "Max Payne" is one of my top 5 games of all time. I didn't think they'd do a third one, and I'll admit that I'm a bit concerned that it's not being handled my the same team that did the first two.

But, still -- OH ... MY ... GOD ...!!!

I hope it still has that noir feeling to it, because in that picture Max looks a little too gritty for my tastes. Also, what the hell? Is it coming out for PC or not?

I hope that isn't Max in the header image. I mean, he did change appearances from MP1 to MP2, but MP2's graphics were clear enough that we've got a very iconic and definitive idea of what Max is supposed to look like. He's supposed to look like fucking Timothy Gibbs. That guy in the header image does not look like an old Timothy Gibbs.

Winter 2009? I wonder how long its been being developed for.

I hope they stick with the original max voice actor, then again by the looks of 'Old Max' in that promo shot they may as well just bring in David Hayter.

Fantastic, I loved the first two, simply because they could tell a damn fine story, whilst keeping the focus on incredible action and set pieces.

I'm a little worried about the change in Max's appearance, but then again I also felt that way with the last game. I warmed to it in the end.

Yay for Max Payne, but I second Johnny Justice on his appearance.

He's looking very Nico Bellic-ish these days.
