Rockstar admits to GTA IV development challenges with Xbox 360, PS3 photo

In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, Rockstar's Creative VP, Dan Houser, was asked if the lack of an included hard drive in Xbox 360 Core systems and the 360's use of the DVD format was causing any limitations in the development of Grand Theft Auto IV. Dan's reply was a short but sweet, “yep.”

He goes on to say:

"To be honest with you we haven't solved all those riddles yet." The difficulties aren't limited to working on Microsoft's box, as Houser explains that "both have enormous challenges" and that "both have their own particular pleasures and pains".

It will be interesting to see how big of role Blu-ray and hard drives actually end up playing. No one (well, besides fanboys) would really benefit from one version of GTA IV being drastically better than the other. As long as the final product isn't dumbed down so that it meets the requirements of the lowest common denominator, I'm a happy man.

I really like all the GTAs. However, I think that Train Simulator game for the Wii will be better. :)

Thank god I bought a stolen brand new PS3 off some gangbang in Detroit.. cuz I got a feeling that the PS3 will run this game better no matter if everything will be the exact same...

they just need to say that if you bought a core 360, you don't get to play. you're a dumbass if you bought a core anyway, and this should be your punishment. that at least solves the hard drive issue.

The game will be dumbed down for both the PS3 and the Xbox360.

They cannot release two very different versions of the game, because then it's obvious that the Xbox360 has already started blowing, and it would be a BIG red flag, betamax like.

So, the PS3 version, while it could be much better, it will suffer so that the 360 version is accommodated into existence.

Pretty much the same went for MGS4. Kojima said he won't release it on the Xbox360 not because he doesn't like the console, or because he doesn't want the money from it, but because he doesn't want to water his game down and make it inferior to what he's already planning to make it.

This is going to be a shitty time for gamers, because most companies will water down their games, so they'd be able to sell the most copies (smart Microsoft established the base early and so has the highest market share).

Gamers are fucked, if you want it in short.

If IV came out with "This game requires the Xbox360 Hard drive" printed on the label, do you think it would hurt sales? Hell no. It would just force the NitWits who bought the Core system to get a HDD, and set a precedent for other developers to do the same. Sifnt itll run fine on 360...... rockstar can run their games on pocket calculators with enough time to work on the code (just look at the GTA games on PSP).

-> BlackDove: Got to disagree. If you think the game will be somehow significantly worse for being ported from one console to another similarly powered one, I'm pretty sure you're way off. It might mean the developers will have to have a few less dynamically generated clouds floating around the sky, or that shadows of birds are rendered slightly poorer than they could otherwise be, but it shouldn't actually hurt the gameplay at all. Game developers have been working within architectural constraints for as long as there have been games. For example, gamecube and xbox architectures are completely different, but there were plenty of games ported that played equally well on both systems.

That said, I don't think making the game HDD only would be a bad idea at all. The main trouble would be getting the green light from MS.

-> OboeHero: No, mxy was just making a funny joke. That's not to say it's false, however....

-> WiiSucks: No, sorry, you still lose.

why don't they just release the game on par with the systems power. game developers should be passionate about making games, so having their baby being crippled by an inadequate system should make them want to put out their game on the system that will let it shine in all its glory. let the ps3 do its thing, let the 360 do as it does, who seriously could lose here? a couple ps3's sold? having a game thats true to its original vision? keeping hardcore fans happy?
idk, i just think that taking away from a game to meet half the industries standards is a damn shame.

Ok, bad puns aside, I think is time we just admit the xbox 360 core using a memory card was just a bad idea, if you still have a core stop being so cheap and buy an hdd (you can get one for $70 or even get a used 120 gb hacked in).

I mean you cant even download xbox live games in a memory card anymore they just wont fit. whats the point? if GTA IV NEEDS a HDD just place it in the system requirements, and we will understand, hey sometimes you NEED to upgrade. right?

Now.. if you say you need an HD-DVD we will just drive all the way to Rockstar and kick the developers in the nuts until they realize they dont really require it any more, sounds fair? good.

I just hope they still do what they originally plan for it, Just maybe with the 360 they could take some dynamics out of it. Birds, smoke, lighting, some animations, etc...

hmmmm... Lets see here... The PS3 (all the sudden) has the attention of a lot of 360 fans due to the fact that a game near and dear to a lot of people has the potential to be better on another console. I hear people saying "don't be so cheap" and "why did you buy the core system?" <-- (360)
Point being that the PS3 might have been right all along with the Blue-Ray considering that this is already an issue.

I totally agree with everything you said. I never saw how more storage was ever supposed to be bad, I have not seen any long loading times and Oblivion loads crazy fast (not sure if its blu-ray though) The 20 gig PS3 was only $50 more than the 360 was here in Canada.

I'll never understand how a DVD isn't big enough. Are they saving all their textures in an uncompressed TIFF format, or what?
BlackDove's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/03/2007 07:25

No, the textures just have higher resolution, the models have more polygons, the sound spools at a higher bitrate, and there's just more of it, and diversified.

Even Kojima said that 25 gigabytes is a small volume, and that they'll be able to fill it in no time.

You make it compatible to the Xbox, and you need to water it down. Make it look, sound, and play uglier. Either that, or not release on the Xbox at all. I'd go with the former, since I want money. At the end of the day, who gives a fuck about game quality when I need to buy myself the newest Ferrari to impress hookers?

1 word . . . Compression, just look at procedural texturing. Looking at most current PS3 games on average they weigh in at 4-15GB and that's including padding to fill them up. With too much space developers will get sloppy and rather pushing technology forward by squeezing the most out of the space available they'll get spoilt and not have to bother.

GTA evokes a lot of passion, so I still can't understand the universal lack of fan reaction to the game also possibly being set in PARIS.

Are we Americans so anti-French, we can't even be visibly excited about Franco-carjacking?

Someone throw me a bone please.

oh my, whats this?

only 5 months and a company is allready saying the game will have to be crippled for the xbox? tsk tsk, can I summon my R.Summa-Ifrit now?

Funny thing was that yesterday had a convo with 2 co-workers about which system is going to stand-strong at the end. One of them kept saying in 6month PS3 wont have any games and will be used as a toaster. The other co-worker said: "Im not so sure yet, i just got a 360" and kept telling me to get one. These are signs that developers will have to make a choice very soon about which system they can go all out with.

in the voice of highlander: "There can be only one"

Whut? I never understood how not having to compress data means OMG LAZINESS! If anything it would give developers the time normally spent on developing compressing technology to add MORE content.

Whether you like it or not, high capacity media will come in the future... if it doesn't end up being blu-ray, something else will pop up. I think it would be better for the gaming industry as a whole if they got used to having more data.

Eventually it'll get to the point where even the high-density space isn't enough and developers will have to compress THAT data.

Blackdove, I must be wrong, but I read in an interview with Kojima a while back and they asked him point blank, would the 360 be able to run MGS4 the way it is run on the PS3? Kojima's answer was short, yes. So I don't really know what you are talking about. But I guess you must be best buds with Kojima or something.

bmdubya: Well on the inverse side of the debate, I recall an interview he did with EGM saying that he never liked doing ports. He's interested in doing games for the 360 and the "Revolution" but he wants to do games for those consoles from the ground up. He thinks ports are usually pretty terrible and aren't a good thing to do for the fans.

all i'm going to say about this is, i hope they don't dumb it down any, and i hope that for the 360 they make it a requirement that you have a hdd. oh and i'm buying the ps3 version so if the 360 version is 2 discs, i'm sorry you bought a 360. {sorry, i'm irritable in the morning.}

deiga, Yes I remember him saying he doesn't like doing ports. But the person didn't ask him if he would port it to the 360. He just asked if the 360 could run MGS4 like it is on PS3, and he said, yes, he could. I know the PS3 is more powerful than the 360. I don't know if any of you read the GameInformer preview for GTA IV, but the build they saw was on the 360, and they said at that time it was the best looking 360 game out there, and it is still 5 months from shipping.

bmdubya if you go check the Kotaku article where one of those guys interviewed Kojima I think at the Australian expo, Kojima not only told him it is definitely not coming to the Xbox, but that he doesn't want to water it down by doing a port.

Your replies are unimpressive however, considering your avatar.

If there is some sort of online co-op or online mode, then I will get it for 360 regardless of the graphics, etc.

But if the only deciding factor is whether or not it has achievements, and I actually have a PS3, then I'd get that version instead.

I say Bullshit that the 360's DVD drive is causing problems...it has a much faster read time than Blu-Gay or HD-DVD.
If anything is holding back the 360 version it is the lack of a guaranteed hard drive.

BTW...PS3 is crappy. I want my money back Sony.

Hopefully for the good of all mankind rockstar will say FU to M$ and make it HDD required, can you imagine having to switch disks as you drive across a bridge? not cool. But it is what everyones been ignoring all along, the ps3s bluray and standardized HDD will (as if it hasn't already) prove helpful. I found an old game magazine that was pre-ps1 and it mentioned the new cd drive playstation and the concept of a dvd drive predecessor (they put in brackets "dvd is a new technology that puts movies onto a cd") Sony did it for a reason much larger than movie sales.

I think they should just go back to their original plans and make GTAIV back to being a PS3 Exclusive title. i think it was just plain stupidity to go multiplatform when in the long run all it does is hurt the title. i think if they want it on xbox 360, they should make another version of the game. compare it to what happened with Test Drive Unlimited, from Xbox 360 to PS2. it was made into a new game that could be played on a less powerful system. it would be the same concept except from the PS3 to the xbox 360. i am a PS3 owner (yea im a PS3 fan but i am not biased whatsoever, im just speaking what i believe would work out in the long run) and i feel kinda robbed because i bought the PS3 mainly for GTAIV when it was announced as a PS3 Exclusive title. Anybody feeling me on this idea?

***I have been looking to get a Xbox 360 Elite, and i was wondering what anybody's opinion on it is? worth it or not?
