I don't think killing Megaman was an overnight process. It was a combination of decreasing confidence in the series by releasing a couple shitty Megaman games, having a poor release schedule (releasing too many at once and then not releasing any at all, which made the series difficult to follow), and poor marketing (or rather, barely any). MML3's cancellation was definitely the straw that broke the camel's back though. It was a game fans were waiting for, looked quite good, and was projected to release at a good time (2012 has been a lot more barren than 2011). It's plain short-sightedness on Capcom's part.
...
WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS THIS
Goddammit Capcom. Just... Fucking... damn.
What a load of utter bollocks.
You're not alone in the disappointment boat...
Also, as much as I like to rag on Nintendo and their silly decisions, I still believe that they would never do something like this. At least Nintendo Land isn't a facebook game. (I disapprove of Zynga's influence on most Facebook games)
Megaman, Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe are some of my favourite series. I was REALLY looking forward to Megaman Legends 3 and Megaman Universe (which I was confident they would refine the graphics/gameplay in). But with this: A Megaman Crossover with everyone even .exe Volnutt and Starforce. It should be excellent, but it's a bloody social IOS game. THE FUCK ARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH FUUUCK FUUCK SHIT CRAP CUNT FUCCCCCCCCCCCCCK. It's not all bad though, this isn't as franchise ruining as DMC is. I'd rather a dead franchise like Megaman than one that's being turned into something worse then death like DMC. RIP Megaman, RIP Dante, and with no Joe on the horizon RIP Viewtiful Joe.
But yeah Capcom is dead to me and has been for the last 5-6 years
What a strange trend we're having, lately: Mega Man is being treated like garbage, Mario's getting a tad stale, Metroid is in a bit of a recession, Yakuza 5 may not even arrive to North American shores, Anarchy Reigns may become another overlooked gem, but Sonic the Hedgehog and Rayman are making a comeback. Meanwhile, the Zelda and Kirby franchises are still going strong. There's something wrong with this picture... and I think it's Flipper's nitwit cousin. =P
The idea that if you want a studio to put out the great games you want, you have to support them they release any old shit they throw together for nothing then sell to you at a premium.
Worca, that's actually the opposite of how the world works. When you support cheap cash-ins, you send the message that cheap cash-ins are the way to go.
That goes for any franchise, not just Mega Man.
I'm not sure about that. I AM sure that Capcom is doing a hell of a job making me hate Capcom.
Between this, DMC, and Bionic Commando, they can get fucked.
Just cuz.
The portable Castlevania games had a huge following. Now Konami is releasing a new one which they proudly proclaim has none of what fans loved in the most popular Castlevania titles, instead focusing on making it a God of War clone.
Silent Hill has been getting shafted for years. Now a new game is coming out but instead of survival horror it's a co-op dungeon crawler. Might be fun, but not necessarily appealing to survival/horror fans who wanted more Silent Hill in the vein of the first two games.
The last Ace Attourney ended with a lot of loose ends, then Capcom dropped it for years.
Ace Investigations was amazing, then Capcom decided not to release the sequel in the west. No reason, they just dont' feel like it.
Bionic Commando Re-Armed was amazing, so Capcom dropped the team responsible for it, released a lackluster Re-Armed 2 on fewer platforms and has effectively killed the revival. Even better, my copy of Re-Armed for the PC stopped working. Just a black screen now. Thanks Capcom!
Metroid was riding high after the Prime series, then Nintendo dropped the ball with Other M and has buried the series, with no word of an anniversary release.
I'm sure the list goes on. These are jut off the top of my head. I can think of some less venerable titles that came out, were amazing, then disappeared. Infinite Space was probably the best RPG since FF7, definitely the best on the DS. Platinum Games has repeatedly voiced a desire to do a sequel, but Sega won't greenlight it despite the high sales of the original.
Why not go all the way? Blatantly tread all over their copyright and sell such games en masse to send the message that people are willing to pay for them. Capcom doesn't get to see a cent of that money for something that belongs to them.
This will only work if:
1. A lot of developers sell illegal Mega Man "tributes"
2. None of those developers give any proceeds to Capcom for any reason, be it respect, hope for a new good game, or anything else
3. A balance between such projects made out of spite to Capcom and out of tough love to them is made
4. At least one of them sells big and the developer openly brags about all the money he's making from a Mega Man game
After seeing Rockman 4 Minus Infinity, I have faith in the indie developer and hacker communities to make games good enough for this to work. It's like what the old Japanese proverb says, if a whole lot of people all illegally cross the street, none of them can get in trouble because there's too many of them. The same mindset needs to be applied to the Game Jam idea of yours to have any effect. It will end in either a lot of lawsuits, a lot of buyouts, or some modicum of recovery, but this is a good idea if it's construed as a mass rebellion.

If by "something," you mean "quick and easy social mobile game that re-uses assets from another very ugly mobile game," then yeah, you were right. I guess I owe you money.
My blog post for this is going to be delicious, even though I'm stooping off the high road for it.
Also everyday you forgot something...
"- Announced a new Lost Planet game, as if that was what people wanted"
They didn't just announce a lost planet game, they announced a lost planet game by spark interactive, responsible for legendary the box and turning point fall of liberty, 2 of the absolute worst FPS released in years, plus they said it was going to have a very heavy focus and emphasis on single player and story, cause its not like what people loved about LP2 was the complete insanity of the coop.
I don't know if Capcom is intentionally obtuse or they just don't care.
Maybe Capcom can restore a little bit of my faith when Capcom+RPG= Breath of Fire, again...
