Along with the preview Wii Rock Band drum kit I received last week, Harmonix/MTV Games also sent along some wireless Wii guitars for me to test out.

Not surprisingly, the axes look and feel like the peripherals that shipped with other versions of the game, save for a few Wii-specific buttons (a plus and a minus on the guitar's "knobs," for instance). But if you don't like how the Rock Band guitars feel and would rather use Activision's Guitar Hero III wireless guitar, too bad -- it doesn't seem to work with Rock Band for the Wii.

So here's the part where I would normally write about the responsiveness of the wireless guitar (which communicates with the Wii via a USB wireless receiver dongle). The guitars shipped with the required three triple-A batteries, which was helpful. But I'm missing one thing -- a mini-screwdriver to open the battery cover. You see, a tiny screw stands between me and placing the batteries into the wireless guitar. Like Ikea furniture, the peripheral doesn't ship with the appropriate tool, and even after tearing apart my house, I can't seem to find one.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a major flaw in its design. I think it's been proven time and time again that battery covers can be created with simple latches that don't require screw. See also: every remote control I have in my house, including my Wii remotes; the Guitar Hero wireless guitar; vibrators. It's a puzzling decision made on the part of Harmonix, and it's because of this reason that I haven't played a lick of guitar in the Wii version of Rock Band.

So to anyone planning on picking up the game this Sunday, June 22, do yourself a favor and go to Home Depot to pick up some tiny screwdrivers first.

[Note: This confusing -- and unfortunately idiotic -- design choice also plagues the wireless PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 Rock Band guitars.]

Maybe an eyeglasses repair kit would help.

Why the Hell does Rock Band for Wii or any of the systems need a wireless dongle? I'm pretty sure all 3 consoles have at least Bluetooth built-in. It's a good thing Activision/RedOctane/Neversoft know how to make wireless guitars. I just put my Wiimote in the guitar. It's just one of the many reasons why I won't be getting Rock Band.

@lowercaseluke:

I have many screwdrivers in my house. Big, manly screwdrivers.

Yes, I got the game for PS3 and that damn screw is pointless. It's there just to annoy you more about the guitar. The second time I changed the battery I was ready with a screw driver. The first time however, I couldn't find one and ended up using a big knife from the kitchen. It worked and I didn't lose any fingers, but yea there is no reason to have a screw on a battery cover, period.

Wow. That's a big oversight on EA's part.

No battery cover needs a screwdriver, yet these battery covers with screws are actually insanely common.

I just learned the word "dongle." It sounded to me like a made-up word such as "doohickey," but now I have been educated. I was a bit hesitant to put it into Google, for fear of what would pop up on my work computer.

So uhh, why is the only system in which the GH guitars are compatible with Rock Band the 360? Is there some sort of MS conspiracy afoot?

But does it effect the performance of the guitar itself? Probably not. Try a pointy steak knife if you don't have a screwdriver small enough.

I <3 Rock Band. I'm sure the guitars will work fine when I finally can use them. I'm not saying this ruins the experience or the peripheral, but how can you argue that it's not stupid? It's very clearly stupid.

It's retarded, I went through the same thing when my friend got Rock Band on PS3. I'm glad I bought the game by itself for 360 and just use the GH Les Paul and Xplorer. You can probably find a thumbscrew to replace it at like Home Depot or something, as long as you're not worried about getting shanked by it while you're playing. Also, it can be replaced by good ol' fashioned duct tape.

Thats funny, we also had an issue with that tiny-assed screw. Luckily though I had my knife on me and that worked nicely.

I'm going to assume you're still strumming a sponge with it though.

@ChillyBilly: Yes it does actually. If you can't put batteries into the guitar, it won't work which severely hinders it's performance I must say.

I never use this overused phrase but it seems to fit the situation...

Fail.

Yeah, I had this issue with my wireless 360 RB guitar as well. In fact, I'm having it again right now since I had to send it back and get a new one.

Yeah, when I first bought Rock Band back in mid-December, I couldn’t play the damn game for days on guitar because I didn’t have a mini-screwdriver at college. I don’t understand this design choice at all.

If you have a swiss army knife lying around, that would fit perfectly on the screw

Had the same problem when I bought mine for the PS3

But I agree, they should have used standard screws or just had the plastic latches like in TV remotes
