Rock Band disc export update is now live, kind of useless ... for now (Update) photo

MTV Games just informed us that the title update for Rock Band -- you know, the one that allows you to import Rock Band disc-based songs to Rock Band 2 -- has gone live.

The update will add an "export disc" tab under the extra options of the Rock Band menu, which will allow users to transfer 55 tracks from the original game to Rock Band 2. The cost? $4.99, or 400 Microsoft Points. Right now, the update is useless -- Rock Band 2 has yet to hit shelves. But MTV Games are also quick to point out that the patch is required for all future downloadable content releases for Rock Band, so get to patching.

No word on which 55 songs are transferable; we've contacted the appropriate persons for said info, and we'll update you as soon as we can.

[Update: Ladies and gentlemen, the three songs you won't be exporting to Rock Band 2 are: "Paranoid" as made famous by Black Sabbath, "Enter Sandman" by Metallica and "Run to the Hills" as made famous by Iron Maiden. European folk won't be able to port over Tokio Hotel's "Monsoon."

Additionally, the update also apparently "lowers the threshold on gold stars, making it easier/possible to gold star songs. This won't affect leaderboards as it only affects the threshhold [sic], not the score. Secondly, it fixes a few songs that had 'unhittable' notes."]

Rock Band™ Disc Export Title Update Goes Live

Title Update Allows Owners of the Original Rock Band Disc to Export 55 Tracks From the Game for Play with Upcoming Rock Band 2

CAMBRIDGE, MA – September 4, 2008 - In an industry first, Harmonix Music Systems, the leading developer of music-based games, and MTV Games announced today the release of a title update for Rock Band on the Xbox™ 360™ videogame and entertainment system from Microsoft that will make it possible for owners of the original Rock Band to export 55 tracks from the original Rock Band disc for play in the soon-to-be released Rock Band 2.

Beginning today, September 4th, the title update will add an “export disc” tab under the extras option in the Rock Band menus, allowing owners of the original Rock Band to expand their Rock Band 2 library to include 55 tracks from the original Rock Band track list for the nominal fee of $4.99 (400 Microsoft Points)[1]. In addition, this patch is required for all future downloadable content releases for Rock Band. Previously purchased DLC will not be affected.

The selection of 55 exportable Rock Band tracks joins the weekly downloadable content list of over 200 songs to date and Rock Band 2’s forthcoming setlist of over 100 songs [2] adding to the ever expanding Rock Band Music Library. By the end of 2008, Harmonix has promised an unprecedented 500 songs will be available for the Rock Band platform. For a complete list of Rock Band songs available for purchase and download to date, please go to http://www.rockband.com/dlc.

400 points isn't too bad. Would be nice if it was free though, since I already have the songs and everything.

Whatever, I'll do the transfer regardless.

Nick, I would assume it's the 55 songs that were in the demo build you played either at E3 or PAX no?

Precious NDA blocking more great RB2 knowledge dissemination :-(.

But the tracks i downloaded for RB1 will still show up in RB2 as DLC? Or something...

Why is this online now without Rock Band 2?
$5 sounds fair though.

You can also export your RB1 songs onto your HDD right now, apparently. And it takes only about 1.5GB and 10-15 minutes.

Lack of Enter Sandman pisses me right the fuck off... If this is because of Activision and them possibly doing Guitar Hero Metallica I'll be pissed. I mean shit, they can keep Train Kept a Rollin but not Enter Sandman?
And why no Run to the Hills??

@JoeCamNet:

I'm sure these are questions you may never get the answer to, unfortunately. Business is serious business.

Oh no, I'm sure we'll get the answer when Guitar Hero Metallica comes out.
I remember when it was originally announced that Rock Band would get the first Metallica single off of Death Magnetic... I wonder if that's been scrapped now that Guitar Hero is getting the full album.
Fucking Guitar Hero.

Yeah, the only real loss for me is Enter Sandman. I love playing that song.

"I knew my 99% in some songs were not my fault!"

But seriously, a little lame that three songs I did like had to get the legal shaft compared to one song I didn't like that I thought would be getting the shaft. (Train Kept a Rollin')

Oh well, it happens.

I already have Iron Maiden, Metallica and Sabbath DLC songs, so I'm not going to miss those three that much.

My two favourite parts of this news:

i) I can go back and GS some of those songs I couldn't quite seal the deal on before (have been already)

ii) this means that BR2's sept 14 date is practically confirmed (though not yet actually officially)
