Rock Band 3 will teach us to play for real, apparently photo

Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Dhani Harrison has gone on the record to say that Rock Band 3 not only exists in some form, but that it's going to rock our worlds with hefty educational value.

"I'm working on Rock Band 3 and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game. Give me a couple years, it’s going to happen."

Could Harmonix be taking us closer to this direction for the next rhythm game? Could be, if Harrison is to be believed. Considering his fairly recent and extensive involvement with The Beatles: Rock Band, I think he could be on to something here.

Or, by the time Rock Band 3 does see the light of day, what he's referring to now may have been scrapped altogether. We'll just have to wait and see, now won't we?

In 2-3 yrs you could be playing guitar in a band for real.
Anyone holding out for this to teach them guitar is a either a total loser or a chronically sad bastard.

Yeah this is a bit old but it's source is vague so I won't complain. I do greatly enjoy goin' on break here at the ol' 11-7 and seeing something RB3 related. With all of this years plastic instrument games out I'm joansin' for news on 2010. I know I'm alone. :P

Anyways Dhani Harrison has been really involved with Harmonix to the point where I just think they need to give him a job already. He's brought a lot of great ideas to the table and I think between him and their creative team Harmonix can pull this idea off. Maybe not to the satisfaction of professional guitarist but enough to make it meaningful.

I just hope it doesn't require a new guitar. Maybe this is where Natal/EyeToy will come in? I dunno. The saddest thing is if it required a whole new bundle I know I'd bitch and moan all the way to GameStop.

Normally I'd complain about a RB3 and say LOL MILKING THE FRANCHISE, but it seems that Harmonix are genuinely passionate about getting music out there and helping people learn to make their own, rather than making a game for a game's sake.

NO!!! I don't want RB3 to be Guitar Rising! There's Guitar Rising for that! And I'd buy it if I had enough money! I want RB3 to be a rythmn game, I don't want it to teach me, I just wanna' play a game! Grrrr...

Well, here's hoping...

Learning real guitar isn't that hard. I bought a cheap and nasty guitar that still has 6 strings and 22 frets (for practice, will buy a brand name when I get half decent). Then read up a little on guitar basics (learning chords, how to read tabs etc). Then just download heaps of tabs of songs I like (from Ultimate Guitar) then started practicing heaps.

Yeah its a lot practice, but it starts to payoff within half the time it takes someone to get good at playing expert in rhythm games. I like rhythm games, I just don't think there is a need for them to be educational.

Yeah as for everyone saying "Just play real guitar," this is one of the few instances where I totally agree. No game or software in general can match up with the good vibes of experimentation and self-motivation. If you need a score to feel motivated I question your authentic curiousity in the field of music.

HOWEVER I think it would be interesting from a gameplay standpoint to see how this new functonality would play out in the actual playing of the game.

The thing is, to have a sense of how a guitar truly works, you have to learn scales and I haven't seen any of these games tackle that issue beyond chords (which are created by button pressing anyway). In the end, if you're really serious about it...Buy a real guitar, buy a tab book (or look online) for your favourite bands/songs and have fun learning.

What they're suggesting here is just ways of stopping a brand stagnate and nothing more. I don't know how they're going to translate the basics from a toy into a real instrument without making real guitars in the process. Education, my arse.

Interesting idea, but I'll have to see what the new controllers actually look like making any judgments on whether or not it'll be successful. >.>

Learning to play drums and sing with these games seems rather possible, I have seen many people who are incredible at the drumming and if they could transfer it to real drumming it would be great.

Honestly, I don't see the harm in adding real-world education to it. People bemoan the games all the time that there are those that are good at the game who think that could then go on to play a real equivalent. What if the games really CAN in the next gen? I know that games can be fun and educational from first-hand experience: I used to type by looking at the keyboard, despite being taught touch-typing. Then I got a copy of Typing of the Dead and I haven't looked down again ever since. That game actually gave me a valuable skill and increased my wpm where I now type nearly 100 words per minute.

...except when I use my iPhone.
The only people ultimately that will suffer from this potential development are parents and neighbors as their kids rock out longer and repetitively to learn a new track.

So this new game in the Rock Band series will just be a box with tickets for half a years worth of guitar lessons?

This would change the game to allow improvisation, and the whole group of all those shitty music games out there punish any sort of improvisation.

I think this is a great idea. Hopefully this will shut up all the naysayers about music games. Maybe Led Zeppelin will finally license their music out to Harmonix/MTV/EA.

Wishful thinking though.

I suck enough at the game with the plastic button guitars - if they try to make it more 'realistic' with more buttons/strings/whatever it'll put me off for life.

Dear Harmonix do what Activision does and drop a music game every 6 months or however frequent they drop them. Maybe then your games will get better. -A guy who hates Rock Band and Guitar Hero
