It's no surprise that Rock Band 3 on the Nintendo DS is being mostly ignored. Its console siblings are packed with new features, including the much-talked-about "Pro" modes and the new keyboard peripheral. On Nintendo's handheld, well… there's not quite as much to say.

Based on this trailer (and what we've played), folks familiar with Rock Band on the PlayStation Portable will feel right at home. The game has players responsible for all of the game's tracks, hopping from note highway to note highway to activate riffs, beats, and vocals. In a way, like the PSP version, the game is the spiritual successor to Harmonix's Frequency and Amplitude, just with a bit more of a rock flavor.

The game will feature 25 playable tracks, which -- when compared to Rock Band 3's on-disc set plus the hundreds of downloadable songs -- seems a bit weak. Still, the PSP game proved that the track-switching gameplay mechanic can be both fun and challenging, so the DS game could make for a nice on-the-go affair.

Rock Band 3 DS is out on October 26, the same day it ships for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii.

I owned lego rock band ds, the scoring system was so forgiving that I never played it again, hopefully they tighten some screws this time.

Yeah, I've already got Rock Band Unplugged, and that treats me well enough. No need for the same game with different songs, really.

Why even bother? If you can't get the real Rock Band 3 experience on a DS, just make another fucking Frequency.

I know it's easier to market Rock band 3 than another Frequency, but the DS version isn't even Rock Band.....ITS FREQUENCY!

Rock Band Unplugged felt surprisingly tight and deep for such a tiny thing. It translated the Rock Band-ness of Rock Band pretty damn well without using peripherals or anything.

That said the poor DLC support kind of killed any replayability it had.

Which kind of speaks volumes for how important DLC has become for this franchise and for peripheral based music games period.

@nanowerx
Brand recognition sweetheart. Brand recognition. Just be happy you're getting another Frequency. Who cares what name it's under?

I mean do you want Harmonix selling you a bunch of bastardized hunks of plastic as "peripherals"? No. No you don't.

But what's the point of the game if you can't get the whole experience?

Well good sir as long it's a good game (and if it's half the game Rock Band Unplugged was it will be) who cares? Do you just love holding big ass pieces of plastic in your hand that much that even if it's a slight derivitive of the original formula it's lost it's value?

It would be nice to get more DLC for PSP's Rock Band Unplugged...

And this can't touch Frequency nor Amplitude in any way, shape, or form.

I'd be interested, but the short setlist is concerning. I loved Rock Band Unplugged (even if I still preferred Frequency and Amplitude), and all the DLC helped make it worthwhile, even if they stopped releasing it. But 25 songs, with no possibility of DLC? Ugh. If it's Band World Tour like in the PSP version or even the regular games, I don't know if I could handle playing those 25 songs over and over again that much. Maybe once the game's dropped in price a little.
