Rock Band 2 commercial gives first glimpse of optional drum cymbal add-ons

Hey look! A commercial for the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band 2, which will surprisingly be released this coming Sunday, September 14!

No big deal, really; it's your typical videogame commercial, showing little, or in this case, no footage of the game in question. But something about it caught my eye -- the Rock Band drum kit that is being played has cymbals! Yup, it looks like this might be the first glimpse we're seeing of the optional Mad Catz-produced cymbals that can be attached to the upcoming Rock Band 2 drum kit.

They look pretty sturdy, with some heavy-duty-looking clips connecting them to the set themselves. Also, they're round, like, you know ... traditional cymbals. That's not a knock on other kits that have cymbals, though -- we'll let them fight it out themselves. I'm just making an observation, is all.

There's been no official word on pricing (or an official reveal, beyond this), but GameStop is listing a "Universal Rock Band 2 Cymbal - 2 Pack" for $29.99 with a late September release. It should be noted that the Rock Band 2 drum kit supports up to three cymbals; it also has another jack that is not for a second bass pedal, despite earlier reports. (No, we have no idea what it's for, though.)

Look for our full Rock Band 2 review (along with impressions of the redesigned instruments, but not these fancy cymbals) on September 14.

@galagabug:

No -- the new drum sets have four ports in the back for additions. Three of them are for cymbals. The two pack confuses me.

ummm not everything in this commercial is legit sirs I mean if you watch it they have a guy who is playing a bass version of the fender guitar and by that I mean if you look up at the top of the neck of the guitar it has 4 knobs to adjust the strings not 6 which tells me that either one they are releasing a bass guitar (Yeah!!!) or two that this was a commercial that can't live up to it's promises.

I don't know what song that is, but all I could think of was that insanely obnoxious DS Guitar Hero commercial.

@ slee They sell the bass guitar controller now. It has the split strum bar too.

If you add 3 cymbals, will there be 3 more notes or do they just replace the pads? I always wondered about that.

I think I hang around this site too much, at the beginning when he presses the power button I half expected it to red ring.

Are we sure that's not the Ion kit in the ad?

@Nerfgun

Some of the shots are of the ion kit but some are the regular kit with cymbals (like at 0:24). There's actually a shit load of different versions of the instruments in there when you look closer but they are all compatible.

I think I've decided to get the new drums for RB2 instead of the GH4 ones. Now I just have to decide whether or not I'm going to get them with the cymbals or splurge on the ion kit (I really do want to learn how to play the real thing).

Actually I remember them talking about a bass guitar. It has a split strum bar so you can actually double up strum it with two fingers like you should be able to.

To answer a few things:

- They are releasing a bass guitar (Mad Catz). I don't know much about it, but I'm sure you can find a GameStop product page (they're already displaying it in in-store advertising, and some stores have received them already from what I understand).
- The song is "Let There Be Rock" by AC/DC which is in the game and a totally ridiculous song.
- The Ion Kit may be in the commercial, but there are shots of the regular drums with cymbals attached to it.
- Adding the cymbals will not add notes, no. But during freestyle fills they will (according to what I was told) act as cymbals where as the pads will all act as drum heads. In the actual game though, they will only double what the pads do (yellow high-hat, green crash or ride). I haven't used this stuff, so I'm only speculating based on what I was told by MTV and HMX PR.

Can I use the cymbals in World Tour as the extra pad from the World Tour drum set?

I am still deciding if I am going to buy the new instruments or not.

If you pause the video at 0:38, it looks like they're releasing a bass controller. It's only got four of the screws at the top instead of six.

Or it could just be a real bass. It's hard to tell.
