Robbie Bach: Customers forgave us for the RROD, still love their Xbox 360s photo

While the Red Ring of Death debacle proved costly monetarily, as far as Microsoft is concerned, the image of the Xbox 360 has managed to remain relatively untarnished through it all. During a recent interview with Venture Beat, Robbie Bach echoed that sentiment:

In the ordinary course of something like this, you would expect it to show up in the customer reaction data. We just haven’t seen that. It speaks to the fact that they love their games and Xbox Live. Does it frustrate them? Yes. On the other hand, they know we’re taking care of them. People have a certain amount of respect for that. If it had happened on a product that had less baseline customer satisfaction, it would have had a bigger impact. We really haven’t seen that.

Like Robbie said, even we remain somewhat stunned at how well the Xbox 360 weathered that storm -- most other products in our daily lives would have been discarded and long forgotten by now, had they a similar service record. Then again, gamers tend to be a forgiving bunch... don't we? Let's just hope that we don't end up with a repeat with the next-generation Xbox -- even gamers have a limit on how much we'll endure for the sake of our hobby. Have your views of the Xbox 360 changed since you first bought one?

Games really do make the difference, after all.

If this had been the Wii or the PS3, they might have been run over, covered in cement, and buried in the desert by now.

I can tell you that it changed the perspective of at least one person that I know really well. Great games or not, one expects equal quality on the hardware side.

I don't forgive them for say.. charging to play online for Gears of War on not only XBL, but on the PC as well. I do however approve how quickly it took for me to get my repaired 360 back and that free month of XBL.

I'm on my fourth 360 as of now and the RROD'ing hasn't changed my views on it because it still is my favorite console (I currently own a PS3 and a 360, and I had a Wii but sold it). I mean honestly if my PS3 defected I would really only miss Uncharted and obviously Metal Gear Solid 4. But I would not tolerate three defects of a PS3 like I have the 360. Mostly because the 360 has a obviously larger catalog and a much more capable online component and while PSN is free, it doesn't offer the stability of Live.

Dear Robbie Bach:

No, I have not forgiven you, you pompous ass fuck. And no, I never will forgive you for pushing a buggy, shitty console out the door just to beat the PS3 and Wii to the market. Oh, and Live isn't the hottest thing out there anymore. I expect better for my $50. Shove that up your ass, jerk.

Ha, has everyone forgotten how bad the original Playstation hardware was?

I owned 3 PS1's. No freaking warranties. So I think games do matter. Because like a damn fool as soon as a PS1 broke I bought another one. Still on my launch day 360 though, just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

If there wasn't an extended warranty to cover the RRODs, then I'm sure it would've been a shit maelstrom at this point. Between good flow of games, great online service and the warranty, the 360 been able to keep the masses from going nuclear on them. I just hope in their case that they are trying to bring the hardware up to better standards so sending your 360 in for repairs and/or returning it for a new one become a less common thing.

I've only had one system in my history ever break, then again I never owned an original NES. My PS1 was good, PS2 started to get Disc-read problems which was swapped out for my (girlfriend at the time) wife's slim Ps2 (PS3 shortly after).

PS3 borked, but got promptly repaired.

It's not that we're forgiving, it's that we've plopped hundreds of bucks into peripherals and games for the systems, that's why we continue to support. We don't just pack up and run (lol HDDVD)

Causual has a point, the origianl PS1 hardware was awful. Castlevania made my first PS1 explode with sparks and then I ended up buying two more before the end. But still, that was Sonys first system and this is Microsofts second, so what gives here?

Forget PS1, how many people owned an early PS2 that stopped reading "blue disks." I know I'm not the only one that tried everything from taping pieces of paper on top of the discs to opening it up in an attempt to adjust the laser. Damn tape actually ripped off part of the disc surface, luckily I just told Blockbuster it was like that when I rented it. Oh and their network adapter never worked with the earlier versions either. Assholes.

I don't recall forgiving them. There are only two reasons for their continuing sales success: One, gamers are idiots. Two, the fans of the 360 don't find the PS3's games more compelling than the 360's.

The only reasons I still want one is for some of the games and for the Xbox Live service. But with more people buying PS3s, the appeal of Xbox Live is going to go down.

@The Wrath

Well by stability I didn't quite mean the server side as much as the community side of it. Judging from my experience I've had better times with the community of Live than with the community of PSN but of course I could just be playing with the wrong people. But yes the outage in that month was horrendous and Undertow did not make up for it.

God, Sony needs to hurry up with their 'Xbox Live killer'. They just need to open the floodgates and start releasing more stuff that people wanna buy, fun co-op games and multiplayer titles. And address that huge elephant in the room: in-game XMB.

What MS fails to realize is that while most of us X360 owners have stayed with the console due to the fact that we're too far in at this point, that doesn't mean that the Xbox brandname isn't harmed. Come the release of the X720 let's see just how forgiving gamers are. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm going to be holding off on the purchase of MS's new console until at least two years after release just so I can be more or less assured that it won't spontaneously break down.

casualweaponry & LongDeth:
I had a near launch PS1 that either kept crashing or wouldn't load games and this was when I was having sex with FF7. My mum called Sony while I was at school and the very next day a guy came round and took my busted PS1 away and gave us a brand new 1 there and then on the spot. Somewhat better than the current M$ warranty wouldn't you say?

I don't forgive M$ for shitty hardware. Nor do I think many people really do, they just appreciate that M$ are doing anything at all but they don't think about what they should do which is re-design the 360 so that the RRoD is a thing of the past.

I haven't forgiven them for it......

I still have DRM issues I need sorted out. I'm constantly pulling the power cord out and then plugging it back in, due to false RROD's. I'm on my third system, and it just so happened that it broke on the day of GTA 4's release, which meant MS was losing royalty money cause I bought the PS3 version. You know, the system that works.

And besides all of this, a year from now I'll be out of a warranty, according to MS. Let's see how happy customers are when their 3 year extended warranty runs out and they have to pay $100 + everytime they want it fixed. Fucking morons at MS

If it breaks then I expect it fixed quickly - this I have no problem with, when oh when will i see a silent 360, the noise bothers me intensely. Microsoft has damaged the brand with this issue but big companies can turn around, look how resilient the ipod/phone is now (fekkin screen just wont scratch at all) compared to the scratchy screens of previous versions. A new machine will need big assurances before I jump in so quickly though.

Yeah, they definitely damaged their brand as a whole, but they are still selling tons of games. I agree, wonky, I might be a little skeptical when it comes to the "next-gen Xbox". I'll still get it, but I'll definitely be skeptical.

I wasn't very upset when my 360 got RROD (even though it was during Christmas break). It took an acceptable 2.5 weeks from the moment it broke down until I had it back in playing condition once more free of charge. Much better service than I got with my PS2, which never worked properly (DREs) since I got it in 2001 and I sent it in to Sony and got it back working exactly the same.

stability is why I went ps3 instead of 360 when i recently got a console- honestly before RROD I was going to get a 360- but even with the warranty extension, I didn't want to have to deal with the 360 especially since literally every one that I know who has one has had to send it back at least once

Playing the 360 doesnt make me feel calm at all.
I'm constantly worried about wether I've saved the game in case of a Disc Read error. This shouldnt happen!
It feels like when I'm playing PC games! Just errors and disconects all the time!

But with the PS3 & Wii, it feels like I'm actually playing a videogame console. And I feel relaxed...

The 360 is an otherwise great console, and has the greatest game library and online service. But Microsoft really shot themselves in the leg with their unstable hardware.
If they could give out a reissue thats sleek, quiet, stable and reasonably priced, then they beat the PS3 with a large degree.

I would probably just get a PS3 if it were not for all the games I have and want to get on the 360.

When I got my 360 it wouldn't play any games....I got some fucked region code error. After 2 or 4 days of hunting another one down all was well and good...Until I was getting 'Disc Unplayable', but I feel I helped to cause that as I smoke, my friends smoke, and It was just getting smoked up (HA)...

If I have any gripe with MS it's that I am getting fucked with my arcade games because there are a few I've bought that no longer register as purchased (even though I have achievements for them) and they have no answer to that. fuckers

Say what you will, but I have a Wii and a 360 and have only had problems with the 360 as far as hardware goes. (I heard of Mario Galaxy's issues, but they didn't affect me.)

Projectexodus is right, it's just Microsoft's PC roots coming through. Apparently they treat hardware like software -- release it early and "patch" the hell out of it later on. Only with hardware problems, they actually can have the excuses of shipping and labor and so forth as justification for making you pay to fix their mistakes.

They're almost a branch of government. I'm still paying for that whole Iraq thing.

had nothing but luck with my consoles - owned one PS1, one PS2 (from launch) and one 360 (waited a few months before getting one.) I guess some folks look at it like it's some badge of honor to have broken equipment or some odd sense of pride at spending cash on the same thing 2 or 3 times, personally, I'd rather save that cash for something better like games, DVDs, peripherals, but that's just me...

Did you not see the story explaining how M$ knew about the RROD and just shipped the console anyway to beat PS3 and Wii?

Did you not hear about the UK going ape-shit because M$ couldn't fix anybodies 360's because the company they outsourced the repairs could not keep up with the demand?

And do you realize that almost every single comment here is from people who at least own XBOX360 consoles, and in some cases they own more than 1 console?

No?
