Roadrunner releasing God of War: Blood & Metal EP photo

Say what?

Roadrunner Records has teamed up with Sony to release a digital EP called God of War: Blood & Metal. It's basically just what its sounds like -- unreleased songs by metal bands remotely inspired by God of War.

The EP will feature five tracks, with music by Killswitch Engage, Dream Theater, Trivium, Opeth, and Taking Dawn. Those who purchase God of War III Ultimate Collection will get a voucher code to download the tracks, along with the music from the God of War Trilogy soundtrack.

God of War III is out this March, and I really don't care what extras they throw at me -- I'm dying to play it, even if it required Sony Santa Monica sending someone to my house to kick me in the crotch.

Don't care about the music, but man do I share your desire to play this. Who am I kidding... You're Nick Chester. You've probably already spent time with the game. Some people got it like that, lol.

And Roadrunner has very close ties with Viacom and Harmonix...just sayin'.

I'm dying to hear the Opeth and Trivium tracks - and obviously to play the game itself. The Ultimate Collection looks incredible, I can't wait.

I'm conflictedbetween my love of God of War and absolute hate of metal....

Opeth, yes. The rest... not so much. Trivium and KsE are decent for metalcore, but Dream Theater have really jumped the shark. They need to call it a day.

And Taking Dawn are fucking awful. Definitely not even remotely close to metal... Why're they on Roadrunner? Oh, that's right, easily marketable hard rock with minimal talent.

Well, the lineup of bands they have is solid. Maybe it ain't just a shameless cash in product.

Wow, I hate half of those bands. But who knows, maybe it'll be okay.

How is no one signaling out Dream Theater? I expected better from DToiders.

THANK GOD A GAME FRANCHISE FINALLY RECOGNIZES GOOD MUSIC.

Killswitch Engage? Hell yes (as long as it's not the new stuff).
Opeth? Not half bad.
Dream Theater? Pretty good.
Trivium? Decent.

What they really need for God of War is Lamb of God, Job for a Cowboy, Whitechapel, Born of Osiris, etc.

All of the songs are gonna be new stuff, as it's music that's been composed with God of War in mind (seemingly).

Also, I don't think Deathcore would suit GoW (which, minus Lamb of God, all those bands are). Maybe regular Death Metal, but Deathcore is basically DM watered down for the masses and, as we know, GoW is a game about going completely OTT. Don't get me wrong though, I love a ton of Deathcore bands but they're mostly underground and criminally unknown, like Incarpathia and Thy Art Is Murder.

When I saw Killswitch Engage and Trivium I thought "oh, cool". When I saw Dream Theater my eyes widened. When I saw Opeth I realized I'm definitely buying this.

@XzyliacGaGa : Dream Theater is good, please recant thine statement, lest unpleasant squirrels burrow into thy humble abode ^_^

(I don't even know what I just said...)

I could mention quite a few other bands I'd love to see added to the soundtrack. But it's metal and metal is good.

Sold.

@Xzyliac

not really. Roadrunner was owned by Warner Brothers, and there was a block of time (like,a whole year and a half) where absolutely nothing on the roadrunner (and to a larger extent) warner brother's label came out for Rock Band. The first actual Roadrunner related pack that came out was the 7 song one back in 07, and then now we have a Slipknot pack, something like two years later.

I would not say that RR and HMX are close, the WB label is all about the money and that heavily restricts what songs they choose.

Although I would love to see God Of War related songs show up on 360.

Plus we have the Megadeth stuff and Portnoy has said over and over he's more than willing to sign off on anything for Guitar Hero and Rock Band.

Outside of Dream Theater and Megadeth there's nothing else O care about under the Roadrunner label and since Portnoy and Mustaine are already on the bandwagon I guess I consider that the whole label. My bad.

Why is roadrunner devouring all of my favorite bands?

I know that it may be mere coincidence, but DT, Opeth, and Porcupine tree seem to be taking steps to becoming more mass-marketable, in music and appearance.

I don't like it. :<

I like the sound of this. Dream Theater (who I saw live a couple of weeks ago, awesome night) and Trivium are both in my top 5 fave bands and can't wait to hear new songs from them.

I'm not surprised to see Dream Theater. While I usually like their albums, I loathe the fact that they do too many covers, publicity, huge shows (they try to fill arenas and end up with the place half empty), DVDs, live albums, etc. Dream Theater loves publicity, and being on the GoW3 EP is nothing more than that.

I'm surprised to see Opeth there though.

@that1dude24

PT isn't more marketable in 2009 than they were in 1999. The Incident is actually less marketable than Deadwing or In Abstentia, and considering that they're playing the whole CD non-stop from 1 to 14 in the current tour, I don't think they're looking to please the crowds with "greatest hits" and whatnots.

Nuclear Blast > Roadrunner, for the most part. Oh well, free money for the bands.
