River City Ransom to punch you in the stomach next week! BARF! photo

I don’t usually like to post stories about upcoming Virtual Console games -- what with the lack of exciting offerings as of late -- but this week is an exception. After a ridiculously long dry spell, the “Best week EVER!” is sure to return as classic NES game River City Ransom is set to hit the North American Virtual Console this Monday (4/21).

For anyone not familiar with River City Ransom, well, it’s amazing. That’s all you really need to know. Oh, and it also offers a pretty revolutionary fighting/RPG hybrid that is nothing short of addictive.

And the good news does not end there! After this release, fellow beat em’ ups Double Dragon and Renegade will follow over the next two weeks. That’s almost a full month of violence against women and erotic spa treatments. Hooray!

No word yet on whether these beat em’ ups will come paired with any other games, but I don’t think it really matters; they are all good enough to stand on their own.

What do you think? Are you excited enough to go outside and throw a trashcan at someone? I know I am!

Awesome? Yes.

More awesome than last week's Mega Turrican? Hm... it's up for debate.

I've been waiting for this game, thank god we're finally getting it! For once, Europe got something nice before us, though, and I won't stand for that!

lol, "full month of violence against women and erotic spa treatments." Nicely put sir, haha.

Those games rock. Probably the best of the best for NES beat em ups before the 16-bit era and arcades (when they still mattered).

Deletion Time on my Virtual Console again. I was enjoying all of the weeks of fail that we've been having for so long. Deciding which games to keep on my system and which to delete to free up room on my Wii's memory is the pinnacle of annoying.

Comic Books, Sushi, a Hamburger and Running Shoes make for great retail therapy after traumatizing your fists in the void of someone's face.

I wonder if the erotic spa treatment will be censored for the VC release. After all, the Wii is a family friendly console.

Awesome! About freakin' time...I own all three of those for my beloved NES, but I'll probably grab RCR. That's one of my favorite games for the NES, and one I said I'd buy if it comes out on the VC. Kid Icarus was the other one...own it, but bought it for the VC.

Now, Nintendo...about a Mother/Earthbound release...

I'm happy to hear that the Best Week Ever Dolphins can come out of hiding. I was worried we'd never see them dancing in the distant sunset again. YAY!

I'm also happy to hear that a slew of b'mups (thats hard to say) are coming soon. Although I've been enjoying the VC for the games I've already downloaded (LORDS OF THUNDER!!!!!!), I haven't added any new ones in a while.

Thanks for dolphogram of good news!

Double Dragon = Fail
Renegade = Loads upon loads of Fail

I feel bad for anyone that actually pays for either of those NES games on the VC expecting good games.

@Dexter

I almost want to recommend the GBA port of RCR as a good first experience. As much as I don't want to admit retro goggles for this game, the new version adds some really good things to smooth out and tweak the experience, and has some decent AI co-op.

But the original is a SWEET addition to anyone's VC collection!

River City Ransom EX for GBA was a treat to find. I played the original all the time when I was a kid. This should get at least 3 dolphins. Wii owners get all the good games. XBLA gave us a Rocky and Bullwinkle game. Where is Braid?

Chad, I can't wait until RFG does an Earthbound show!

This game was called "Street Gangs" in PAL territory. I did not know this until a couple of years ago. I remember seeing this in the store and wanting it desperately, but my brother told me I was crap and, since he was older, he had access to information I didn't, and I never got the game. I got Battletoads instead.

Battletoads is a fine game, and a fine meme, but it's no River City Ransom.
