RISK goes Metal Gear in new board game release photo

Over the past decade, the classic board game RISK has undergone a lot of changes with the game seeing both a major streamlining of its rules in 2008 along with a number of licensed, rule-variant versions based on themes and popular licenses. Today, Metal Gear Solid joins the ranks of those licensed products as the "game of global domination" takes on Hideo Kojima's espionage-laden setting.

As with all of these licensed releases, you'll be able to play the standard RISK game straight away. The box also comes with special dice and an Outer Heaven carrier piece used for sneak attacks in the game's other two rule sets. If there is a board game which has successfully managed to adapt itself to licenses while not simply being a promotional tool for them, it's RISK, so I have high hopes for the quality here. But since I have no friends, there's not much point in my getting it. Anybody thinking of picking this up?

always wanted to play RISK, but never could get people to play. I think I'll pick this up.

RISK is a tedious, boring, overly long statergy game entirely dependant on a dice roll with the most irritating unit counters in the world. the fact that the video game version makes games fly by is proof of how bad the real world interface is.

However, MGS is cool, so I'll let this slide...

This is the ONLY way you could ever get me to play RISK.

@dunnace: Agreed.

I would totally get this, but like Conrad, I have no friends who want to play Risk. I've got an old Risk set just sitting on my shelf, collecting dust right along side Battleship, Monopoly, and Scrabble. Le sigh.

This might have to get added to the rotation for my drunken board gaming nights.

Lol, Risk. I remember my rich uncle bought my brother an expensive die-cast Risk 40th anniversary set for one Christmas (and he didn't even want it; damn rich relatives giving crap), and we played it about 3 times total. Don't think we ever actually finished a game, either.

I've only played risk once and enjoyed it. May have to pick it up, though I'm also concerned with whom would want to play it with me. I don't know anyone who plays boardgames.

When you lose at Metal Gear RISK – instead of flipping the board in rage you pick up the phone and say “Yes, everything went according to plan, Mr. President” then leave the room, flipping everybody off singing “BA DA DA DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA”

There are tons of amazing boardgames out there to play.

You don't need to play Risk for the 200th time, discover something new.

All I can find is a pre-order for the Limited Edition. Of which only 2014 are being made. The site shows a "Collectors Edition" as well but no separate listing for it. I really hope it's not limited to 2014 units because I am definitely going to buy this.

That Risk set is probably a Monopoly set, built from the remnants of a Russian Battleship set, produced by the Chinese in order to kill the President and assume his place in order to use the US as a giant proxy to attack South Africa where the government is conspiring with an unknown organization to steal the world's milk supply. If it hadn't been for the revolution. And...

METAL GEAR?!

With the 5 round limit, this Risk is much shorter than the classic variety. However, Dice hate me and I hate them. I prefer a game that focuses on tactical prowess rather than good rolls. We also typically limit expansion in our versions of Risk to prevent a rolling streak from conquering Asia.

Having said all that, I'm torn. On one side, there are MUCH better games out there and I really hate how Hasbro's answer to the rise of Board Gaming is slapping a license on every game and rebranding it. On the other, it's Metal Gear Solid, and like Fleet Captains, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet.

While I definitely appreciate the recent streamlining of RISK in recent years, I'm not enough of a fan of the board game or the Metal Gear Solid series to be into this. I'd probably get the Halo Wars version before this, if any.

ARRRGH!! I hate Risk, but I love MGS! My friends will play it at least, but there has to be a less bullshit way to play than dice rolls.

Arm wrestling, or Ro-sham-bo for that matter.

Conrad, thanks! Between you and Joystiq, I didn't miss the pre-order window! From 'Godstorm' to 'LOTR' to classic to '2210', this will provide the perfect link between classic and '2210' for when everyone does "Civ" on 'Risk' again!
