Apogee Software's classic PC first-person shooter Rise of the Triad is coming to iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad this year thanks to Mobila Interactice.

A full port of the original title for the Apple platforms, Rise of the Triad features the game's original graphics, soundtrack, as well as the 32 levels included in the original. Players can choose from one of five players as part of the H.U.N.T. (High-risk United Nations Task-force), each with his or her own unique characteristics. In a page ripped out of a press sheet from 1994, the game's press release takes great care to let us know that you'll be able to "look both up and down, up to 345 degree, to see what is above and below."

What is above is a video of the game in action; what is below is a gallery of screens. According to Mobila, Rise of the Triad will be available for download "soon."

"Behind you!"
"Over heeeerrrreeee"

This rocked the LAN parties in the CS department late at night in the labs when I was back in college. We stealth installed it in labs so after we handed in our assignments at midnight we'd play for an hour.

Is there any platform this hasn't been ported to?

What is not known, however, is if it will allow you to use the famous "Yoooooouuuuuu suuuuuuccckkk!" as a ringtone.

About time, stoopid iPhone. I read about this port 5/6 months ago, which is more than enough time to completely forget about it's existence before release. Just tell me when it's ready, it's hard to enjoy NOT playing a game for ages.

Why is this not coming to XBLA?

I hate life.

So, how are you going to do the code that makes your guys trip out on shrooms? That's the only thing I remember about the PC version.

God, I had totally forgotten about this game!

But I'm with RenagadePanda... I'd be much more likely to purchase this if I didn't have to use a touch screen.

That looks terrible. Almost half of the screen is obstructed by tumbs.

Awesome! This almost makes me want to get an iPhone!
Rise of the Triad holds a very special place in my heart. When I was a kid I had a shareware disk that had Rise of the Triad on it. I was too cheap to ever actually buy the game, but I played that first level at least a billion times. The disk also had a badass Rise of the Triad painting on the case.

Oh the nostalgia!

Great back in the day; but I worry if this was released now, it will be fun for a couple of hours before making me wish I had left it to my memory.
