Ripped from the headlines: Microsoft's role in building a gaming community photo

In tomorrow's Metro (my day job for the next week before I go Hollywood), I'm running a column on Microsoft and their ever-increasing role in building a solid gaming community. Whether or not you're fully aware, the big M is head and shoulders above both Sony and Nintendo as far as building awareness and responding to problems -- community wise.

After the jump, digest my take on the whole thing which will run in tomorrow's Metro U.S. editions here on the East Coast. Check it out and tell me what you think. I'd like to hear how others perceive Microsoft now.

What Microsoft gets right and Sony gets so wrong

Today’s console and video game landscape is no longer the closed-off, disconnected world we grew up in. Thanks to the power of broadband and a series of tubes called the Internet, we are now a huge contingent of gamers. Banded together by our favorite Web sites, consoles and online friends, today’s video game world is a community — and nobody understands this more than Microsoft.

While Sony, and to some extent Nintendo, are just now beginning to catch up to that notion, Microsoft has been plugging away with ferocity at creating a loyal community of gamers. Whether it’s hosting events for players or emerging Web sites or podcast folks, Microsoft is deeply involved with building a community and the results have piled on since.

On a daily trip through the Internet, a typical gamer may see more than a handful of negative Sony stories, but how often do you see negative Microsoft news? Not very often. The reason for this is because Microsoft is so connected to what is going on out there.
Not only do they have troops on the front-line to quell any sort of confusion over an issue, but they also have their own stable of bloggers and community people to put out the fires of criticism like new-age firefighters.

With people such as Major Nelson and the folks over at Gamerscore Blog, Microsoft maintains a connection that the people at Sony and Nintendo just do not understand. Luckily for Nintendo, they have a healthy staple of fanboys willing to throw themselves off a bridge in the name of Mario, so they aren’t as dependent.

Sony, however, is in a continual state of denial and unless they wake up and realize we are living in a new era, they will lose the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere. But we aren’t the only ones.

The developers are also feeling the winds of change. According to insiders I’ve spoken with over the past few months, they are becoming fed up with Sony’s antics and lack of responsiveness as well. The flood of gaming franchises turning into non-exclusives speaks volumes about Sony’s arrogance and superiority complex.

If Sony truly wants to pull themselves out of the negative public image mud, then they need to take a page from Microsoft’s book and reach out to us, the gamers. Only then will they continue to reign as kings of the gaming world.

milly, you rule so much. Tell 'em about how the PS3 will revolutionize home gaming, make your entertainment center pine-fresh, and cure genital herpes!

Don't scare off Milly. We need more Sony fans speaking out. There has to be a balance in the force. I'm not sure if Milly is serious about what he says, but if he is, then rock on.

rewin,

It seems that you have fallen prey to the MS fanboy network about the 360 cpu. Now the cell isn't all that but you have some things wrong on it.

Now on the 360 you are almost totally flat out wrong.
The 360 is a bare bones group of 3 processors. The 360 cpu does infact use multiple cycles to execute instructions; it can process 3 instructions at the same time but not 3 per cycle(Hz).

They are stripped out PPC units, what was stripped out you ask? The altivec units. That is the PPC equilvient of the SSE and MMX you were talking about.

In short it is unlikely that the PPC processor in the xbox 360 can run generalized PPC software by that I mean Mac OSX.
It's just missing to much to run that stuff.

The 360 totally directed at graphics. Until I see the XBOX 360 have a graphically intense game with good enemy AI and lots of environmental interaction I'm going to think it can't do it. I'll have to wait for the 3rd gen of 360 games to see that.

Much of that has already been debunked or doesn't matter. Find a newer one. That thread isn't kept up.

Fair enough. It's now clear that milly is either a troll, which I can respect due to the effort put in, or a shill, in which case they're commenting in the wrong blog. Either way, I loffled my toffle.

The writting is to good to be a schill. To me an obvious troll.
infact the EXACT kind of troll I read destructoid for.

This site rarely pretends to be balanced nor do the people who post here. Milly is doing a fine job.

Milly, how much does Sony pay you? Do you have a mind of your own? You are seriously fucked up dude. There's an infomercial on for a new pubic hair removal system, and since you're a slave to marketing maybe you'd be interested in promoting that too.

Joseph, debunk them for me. Prove me wrong. I dare you. Give me sources, give me proof. Don't say shit without backing yourself up.

Cell is a clever marketing scheme. If cell is so fucking good why isn't it anywhere but in the PS3? Is it really some kind of 'super computer'? Hell no! Did you know they failed to get it to do the gfx and used nvidia as a last second alternative? Did you know certain devs have canceled releases for the PS3 simply because they could not make 'smart' enough AI on it?

WHAT IT REALLY BOILS DOWN TO is that the 360 has the games here and now. It has the graphics, here and now. It has the community, here and now. It will always be a year ahead. It will always have the support that Sony lacks. Face it, Sony no longer gives a flying fuck about the people using their systems.

BTW Milly.. you think the PSP is a success? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rewin,

You're a waste. The Cell is in LOTS of damn places. Such as ohh IBM high end blade servers. Distributed computing enviroments aka super computers, BluRay players(Sony and others) and in HD TV's (toshiba I belive).

So yes it really really is some kind of super computer as proven by being part of super computers.

You are so damn short sighted you can't even see the value of somthing beacuse it is in a Sony product designed by IBM. That makes you the ultimate fanBOY(TM).

You're not even taking things with good humor. You are a wounded shell of a person who needs help and human interaction that has nothing to do with video games or marketing.

Ok so I've looked more closely and it's in a few places since the fall. I'm so sorry! *sheds a tear*. However the Cell is not a 'supercomputer' like people always try and flaunt. It is in part planned to be used within an upcoming super computer - in combination with typical general purpose processors (cell does not cover all bases after all).

Putting a cell processor in a PS3, does not infact make it a super computer, nor does it even give it the potential of such a claim. In fact, the super computer application of Cell will be using an updated version of the processor anyway. The TV application of Cell is under consideration, and would use Cell as a video decoder (since it is a floating point processor more so than general purpose). Which makes it even more ironic to know that the PS3 has an nVidia GPU which is probably doing all video decoding for the system, since afterall, they did not work out their Cell gfx solution which was supposed to cover all of this.

FYI I have many Sony products in my house, I have two PS2s in fact. I'm not a Cell-hater, I'm a 'PS3 is so great simply because it has Cell!' hater, because it's just not true. The CPUs in all 3 of the big systems right now are IBM cpus. Whoopie. At least 2 of the systems have CPUs designed to do more gaming-involved tasks than Cell. I bet Cell could do some cool physics things, but read around and you'll see they are having a hell of a time making it do AI. General purpose CPU + Floating Point GPU make sense. Floating point CPU + Floating point GPU does not. It will work, anything will work, but the price paid to make it work defeats the speed advantages that it could have had.

BTW I was wasted when I wrote my last comment above, but none-the-less what I said that things boil down to, still apply now. Obviously you agree since you did not argue it.

Have a nice day, I guess you can have the last word because I'm not coming back. It's really a waste of time so instead, I'm going to go queue up some demo downloads, voice chat with a friend, stream some music, and play on xbox live, all at the same time. Happy gaming.
