Ridiculous art for the Aliens game that never was (update) photo

Following news that Sega and Obsidian's Aliens RPG has officially been sent to the boneyard, some ludicrous concept art has surfaced that is ... well ... I've no idea what it's supposed to be. Basically, you have one Alien that looks like it's hybridized with a Dimetrodon and one that looks like it burst out of a giant meatball.

These two things apparently have names, too. The big fat thing is an "Abomination" while the lizard-like one is a "Stalker." I'm surprised they didn't just start copying the Hasbro toy line, since they had some utter gems in there. Killer Crab Alien would kick ass in a videogame.

It at least gives us a clue as to what Obsidian was planning to make the Aliens RPG interesting, if not highly comical. Despite the insane designs here, I'm still disappointed that the game won't at least be given a chance. Still, with Colonial Marines and Aliens vs Predator on the horizon, we'll be getting quite the fill of Xenomorph-flavored revelry.

[Update: We just got an email linking us to loads more concept images from the game. A poster at the Obsidian board dug and threw up tons of pictures ages ago but nobody noticed. We've added a full gallery of shots, complete with environments and more Xenomorphs. They're not officially released Obisidan images, and they've been taken from various designers supposedly working on the game. Still, there's an Alien Queen in there, so enjoy!]

Was there a game journalists meeting with Kotaku to all come out against these images or something? What's with the hate?

I like them anyway. I loved the idea proposed in the films that depending on the creature the alien spawned out of there would be mutations. It is a creature of advanced evolution after all.

Anything + black color , no eyes and a tail = Xenomorph

Now wonder, how this gem got canned ? ... evil publisher don`t want to take chances with a highly original and quality concept!

LOL! Looks more like a pet than a vicious enemy. Put a bow on it's head, add a leash...

This kinda what happened with Halo Wars. The have to name up new classes to "fit" within the universe. Except they stick out like a sore thumb. I was looking forward to the game and now I'm thinking maybe not.

Why even make up classes? They have drones, warriors, queens, dog alien (or cow) & hybrids.

Nice how pretty much all the blogs are bashing on the artwork, likely these weren't even final designs.

If you ask me they look pretty cool. It would have gotten pretty boring to see the game aliens over and over.

Plus aliens take traits of their hosts. Destructoid and Kotaku are wrong trying to sensationalize these to justify the post, instead of writing an article on what could have been. Assholes.

Wow, serious some? I was merely poking fun at the silly looking fat Alien. It looks ridiculous. I'm not trying to criticize it seriously.

Anyway, there are loads more bits of art up now. Enjoy!

That huge Alien reminds me a lot of Godzilla from the 1998 movie, both in terms of the ridiculous size and the overall ridiculousness.

Sorry @jim_sterling
I'm just Cranky that the Game has been Cancelled. AND OMG! all those new screens just make it worse. *Cry's a little*

There's got to be something we can do to slap some sense back into Obsidian, get them to jump start this thing after Alpha Protocol.

Jim man, call up some of your game industry insiders, or someone at Obsidian. Lets get the power of Jim and Joe on this. As stupid as petitions are im considering putting one up at my site and thatguywiththeglasses.com for this game. F*ck.

*Kick's something*

The friendlier looking alien creatures are probably the native aliens of the planet, a type of creature friendly to humans. While, the larger Alien creatures that bare resemblence to the films are the result of the planets creatures being killed and producing the Alien type creature.

There's already an Alien history, I'd hate if Obsidian made a whole new one. Don't get me wrong though, they write great stories.

Also I know those images are just concept artwork, but they look fairly crap imo. Taking the series way overboard.

Yes, why would an RPG have variety in its enemy types? That's pure madness!

Perhaps it's for the best that this has been canned.

I hate to be the asshole who KNOWS this stuff but the alien larva tends to gather certain physical attributes of their host organism. While this sounds like cannonical bullshit, keep in mind the novels supported this idea. The comics as well, which had many of the absurd designs that the toyline had including the ape xenomorph. This was taken to an unusual extreme in Batman vs. Aliens where, yes... there was an Alligator Xenomorph.

Thsi concept gatehred soooo much support that they introduced it in the official cannon with Alien 3, and the Dog Zenomorph.

So what they're doing here isn't THAT unusual.

The only Alien cannon that I'm interested in are the films 'Alien' and 'Aliens.' I consider everything else to either be too derivative or poor quality. :)

The only one that looks bad im my opinion is the Hulk-Xeno. Some of the concepts in that gallery arent xenos theyre other aliens / naitive fauna.
Im digging the fire-ant / desert queen variant.

The first one (header image) looks to me like they just copied the Warhammer 40K Carnifex which ironically is from the Alien rip-offs Tyranids anyway. I mean I've got a Carnifex that looks exactly like that first design.

@BattyAdroit IMO alien 3 was a lot more like "alien" than "aliens" - when I was a kid I was sooooo disappointed in that movie- I felt like they shit all over alien when it came out and turned it into an action flick
