Here's a developer diary from the team at Bugbear Entertainment, currently working on Ridge Racer Unbounded. There are cars, they go fast and the level editor they show off looks like a great execution. They also released a batch of screenshots which you can view in our gallery.
Ridge Racer is a series which never captured my interest as a participant because, as with most racing games, I was utterly abysmal at it. That didn't stop me from staring in rapt awe over the arcade machines (so shiny). Unbounded seems much more my speed, as bringing combat into racing games means I don't necessarily have to be good at the racing part. I'm keeping my eyes on this.

Im not sure a simplified level editor is a good thing, I guess people interested in creating stuffs, whatever the game is, wants the real deal, not that kind of blocky thing they showed. But oh well I could very possibly be wrong.
Ridge Racer + Burnout might work... but the way these guys explain it make me think its not quite what I'm looking for.
Ridge racer is fun cause its focus on racing mechanics over all the gimmicky stuff.
It took me a good while to master the drifting but once you do, its just fun.
With Burnout elements and shortcuts though... it kinda breaks the point...
Might as well add turtle shells derp
Then again if they can nail the core ride racer mechanics then I'm all for it.
However the fact they have a story already puts me off...
I like the original Ridge Racer story best.
Its a car, go race, the end.
Best story ever!
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
