Ridge Racer 6 & 7 comparisons
Ishaan

Ridge Racer 6 & 7 comparisons screenshot

The PS3 is powerful. Really powerful. Its 3.2 GHz Cell processor was developed by Sony, IBM and Toshiba in a joint effort, and we all know Sony's marketing executives have been going on and on and on about how the PlayStation 3 is "true next-gen," and how it supports "true HDMI" and so on and so forth.

Well, one of the games Sony is depending on to demonstrate the capabilities of the PS3 is ... that's right, you guessed it: Ridge Racer

Or more specifically, Ridge Racer 7 by NAMCO BANDAI. Responses to the game at E3 2006 were varied, with some drooling over the game's breathtaking graphics, and others claiming it was just Ridge Racer 6 with HDMI support.

So ... how do the two games hold up when you compare them to one another?

Someone over at Dream-gamers decided to do a little comparison of the two titles, and this is what they've come up with:

Though Ridge Racer 6 was released about a year ago for the 360, and Ridge Racer 7  was released only days ago alongside the PlayStation 3, both games maintain a framerate of 60 frames-per-second. RR6 ran at a resolution of 720p, while RR7 runs at a resolution of 1080p.

Here's where it gets interesting, though.

Ridge Racer 6 for the 360

Ridge Racer 7 for the PS3

The poster claims that despite the difference in time and the hardware supporting the two games, Ridge Racer 6 for the 360 looks a lot more detailed, and has posted some pictures to back up his views.

Ridge Racer 6 & 7 comparison

He points out that in the above comparison, the boat has disappeared from the PS3 game. The water in the 360 version seem to look more convincing, too, while in the PS3 version, it just looks "flat".

Ridge Racer 6 & 7 comparison

In this picture, the road, the shadows, and even the railing all look better in the 360 game. The only addition the PS3 version makes is the use of illumination to make certain elements more visible onscreen (like the trees).

Here are the final two pictures that blew me away.

Ridge Racer 7 for PlayStation 3

Ridge Racer 7 - PS3

Ridge Racer 6 for Xbox 360

Ridge Racer 6 - Xbox 360

Overall, he says it seems the PS3 makes better use of illumination, while the 360 version makes better use of textures.

There you have it. Several other comparisons have been made, too, between the two consoles, with people saying the games they share look almost identical on both. I suspect it's going to be quite a while before the PS3's supposed graphical superiority starts to show in comparison to the 360.

Many thanks to Luis De Jesus for the tip!

Not to mention the 360 version has a better HUD.

In the first comparison pics, it looks like the PS3 is showing more stuff off in the background than on the 360 version.

Between these two images, I would say the PS3 version looks better. They both look nice, though - the difference isn't enough to care about.

Yeah I don't care to much about Ridge Racer either.

To be honest I don't think we should expect any game multi-platform games to look better on one console or the other.

At least not for a good 18 months.

Whomever that did the comparison is grabbing at straws; clearly the intention of the PS3 version is to make the graphics more realistic. A boat? A railing? That's what determines 360 is king? The water effects in 360 is convincing? What natural body of water in real life has ever look like that? I think those are design changes more so than graphical limitations on PS3's part.

I still love you Ridge Racer.

And I prefer the hud of the PS3 version, but why is there a different version number? It looks like the same game?

When I looked at the first screens I thought the PS3 had pwned the 360, but the close ups told the real tale. The first pic of the 360 version looks dingy next the the PS3, but the 360 looks a lot better up close (I tend to sit in the floor close to the tv and play). I think the difference here is that the developer can put in more fine details at 720p. The first gen PS3 games running at 1080p will probably not looks as good as the 360 version running at 720p. To be perfectly honest, I would rather have more eye-candy and shaders at 720p. It will be interesting to see what devs can get out of the PS3 at 1080p on 2nd gen (and higher) software. But since I don't own a 360 (yet), an hd-tv (yet) or a PS3 (be a while, if ever at that price) I could just be talking out of my ass. Although my LCD monitor at 1280x1024 could support 720p. hmmmmmm...
some_dude's Avatar
some_dude at 11/13/2006 21:28

I wonder if you run the PS3 version at 720p, does it get more detail, or do you get the same game at a lower resolution? I mean most people will be running it at 720p I would think, so that could make a big difference.

Yeah, the 360 looks better, but I have the feeling it says more about the texture artists than the system itself. It seems like if you would just change the textures of the PS3 version - darker colors and more contrast - you would get a similar effect as the Microsoft iteration.

I, too, wonder why the PS3 version is called Ridge Racer 7 when it seems rather similar to 6.

Oh, and the water looks better on the PS3. Dunno about you, but I've never seen calm water that ripply before, unless there was something disturbing it. Like a boat maybe? :)

Anandtech has the most unbaised comparisons you could ever read, while also being one of the best and most respected tech sites on the internet. People think that the PS3 is so much stronger, but it really isn't. It looks awesome if you are going over a spec sheet, but it's not exactly ideal for gaming in a couple areas and they explain why in good detail. That's not to say that the 360 is the omega of gaming. Both systems have their ups and downs, but performance is going to be a lot closer than people are led to believe.
djomg's Avatar
djomg at 11/14/2006 01:11

I'm at a loss, here. I can't believe anyone thinks the 360 looks better. It is clearly out of gamma. The contrast is boosted so much that a red car looks orange; the mountains and sky are blasted into white; and shadows lack detail.
Both are obviously good enough for gaming, but I agree with godmonkey - PS3 is more realistic; 360 is more Xtreme Mountain Dew commercial-looking.
If the trend is for games to more closely resemble reality, PS3 is clearly the leader here.
But people don't always want reality.
emotaku's Avatar
emotaku at 11/14/2006 02:24

You're right, djomg. That gamma is definitely making that boat disappear. Simple colour tweaks causing all kinds of draw distance havoc!

Ridge Racer for the ps3 developers are choosing blander, more uninteresting colour pallets on purpose? You're right, Ridge Racer is thee racing simulator.

360 has better graphics but I feel that the PS3 looks a tad bit more on the REAL side.

First, chill on RR, this is a graphics comparison. Go flame the game in a review of the game.
djomg is right, 360 is having gamma/contrast issues. It's on Burnout too. The high contrast problem is muddying the detail, whereas PS3 is lighting everything up and looks clear. Texture detail is richer on the 360, however, but that doesn't always translate in motion. Look at the tree shadow detail on both; the 360 is a mess and the PS3 is nice. The trees in the distance on PS3 are rich in detail and the 360's are lost in contrast.
Water is never flat, and while the 360's is exagerated, the PS3 doesn't even seem to try to create a texture. It looks flat shaded. RR has never been a "realistic" game, opting more for a cartoonish, arcade look and feel, like it or hate it (For me, <3).
Emotaku is right, gamma doesn't mean objects should be gone, but I think it's almost even in number of onscreen objects. The cruise ship is gone, but there is clearly a 3-mast, gigantic sailboat in the PS3. Seems like the difference in objects is a design choice.
Overall, I'm worried about what I see as a trend in gamma/contrast issues in 360 games, but everything I'm reading about the Cell cpu seems like a programming nightmare. Sigh.

Simply put. Racer 360 - 2nd Gen Title. Racer PS3 - 1st Gen.

I know you may say it doesnt mean a thing, but it does, Confidence grows once familiarity with a system is higher.

Ridge Racer 6 was a 360 launch title. You're mistaken.

Both look good, I dont think any of this is delving into the fact that the PS3 version runs at as high of a framerate at 1080p as the 360 versions does at 720p.

And the screenshots look like they are the same res to me in the close up? Is that tv 720p or does it support 1080? Its not really fair otherwise.

And the doodads on the side of the track seem to me to just be the team slightly changing stuff on classic tracks. It has absolutely nothing to do with hardware power. As you can see the 360 version has a boat further in the background while the PS3 has a boat closer. Its just an update to the course visuals.

And just personally, I feel like the 360 version looks like it uses too many hardware effects just for the sake of it. the PS3 version looks really really clean, and I like that.

ok this is a racing game unless u are going to stop in the middle of the race to look at the scenery. i think the only difference u will see at all is the hud display, water, and the texture. other then any of those both consoles are the same to me. if im playing a racing game id rather have the track and the cars with higher detail. So what do u want a console that is 100$ more with little to no difference in graphics? the only game that i would want to get from ps3 is killzone. but im not paying 660$ for it . and dont tell me to get the lower version of the ps3 because u just dont get ur money for wat ur paying for. you always get the better version no matter what. so this shows if you want the ps3 wait till next year dont be a fanatic about it go on ebay and buy the 360 for 400$ safe bet. and dont compair the little details of a racing game ( trees, lights in building) compair something else, something more usefull.. like shooters. i think its more of who has the best game titles and best game play . so other then the trees and the lines on the road, wat is the difference from both ridge racers?

The pictures not are the same quality,

Ps3 - are teken without flash look to the walla and se on center LCd bo flash

X360 - and the wall are more light and LCD have flash and she make the colours more back.

Its not true pictures!!!!

Sorry my english but its esay see that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bazzokabill, seems you are right on some shots but the first 2 look identical for the photo. And Red_Venom makes the good point that the rez's look the same, possibly because of the TV setting? The AA should look better if the PS3 is being shown at 1080, but they don't. But the gamma/contrast problem on the 360 reminds me of the look of Burnout. Does anyone else feel the 360 is a little dim? Ultimately irrelevant, the 360 as a media streamer from PC can't be beat so that's it for me. I just like to hear myself talk.

You guys DO realize that all those photos were taken of a TV and not direct feed right? Stand in front of your tv with a camera and take a picture. See how it turns out.

THAT's why the 360 color looks not as bright, the flash reflected off the tv and they just accepted it.

The proof is in the pudding and looking at the detail, without a doubt the 360 wins.
