The rumors we've been hearing for months are true: a remake of the Starbreeze modern classic, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay will officially be making its way to the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 later this year. And thank God, because it still stands as one of the best games on Microsoft's first shot at a home console ... and it's still not backwards compatible!

The remake, entitled Chronicles of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena, will not be a simple remake. No, no, no! How does an extended (40% more!) single-player mode sound? And hey, whiners -- they're adding a multi-player mode, too.

But the rumors don't stop, as word on the street is that tonight's episode of Spike TV's Game Head will feature the world premiere of this exciting remake. If that's the case, we'll be replacing the above footage of a young Vin Diesel breakdancing as soon as possible. In the meantime, get your learn on.

[Update: We've tracked down the Game Head segment that features some of Riddick's new look. Check out the above video, and hit the jump for Part 2.]

I have a sealed copy of Butcher Bay that I can't even play cause I don't have an original Xbox anymore. At least I only payed $2 for it.

I know someone who hated FPS games but loved the shit out of this (I think it was this one). I've never played it myself, but if it's anything like my friend made it out to be, this might be worth my time.

"Rise and shine, Riddick..."

Best opening sequence in recent memory.

Totally worth it, Jim. And the developer commentary is awesome (they even beat Valve to the punch by almost a year).

So I assume Microsoft isn't in any hurry to add the original game to the BC list.

I had been meaning to buy the original for awhile but the non-BC status held me off. Looks like I'll just wait for this.

Is it just me or was this not a rumor we've been hearing about for months? As far as I can tell the rumor started about a day before Starbreeze confirmed it as it was mentioned in the new Game Informer's rumor section.

The earliest mention I can find of a remake is from 2 days ago.

I've seen quite a few sites talk about the rumor as if it's been around for awhile (which implies to me they can't all be crazy) but the vast majority reported on it 2 days ago all referencing the new GI(I know it was new info to me, and it's rare that something like that would slip by me).

Anyone have any links to earlier reports of the rumor? As a fledgling journalist this kind of crap intrigues me since so much of this industry revolves around rumor. If it was something some people have been hearing for months why was it seemingly never reported?

Riddick was extremely good for a licensed game, but other than the great graphics and some cool moments (like the night vision and the mecha suit), it was quite a bit repetitive I mean how many times you were supposed "escape" in order to just finish the game? I was in my third attempt when I just gave up. Also lack of multiplayer did hurt the game sales and replay value a lot.

This doesnt work in xbox 360 yet? crap!

I was going to make a rant-ish comment asking why the fuck they're remaking a less than three year old game, but if they're adding a bunch of new stuff to it I guess that's not too bad. It's better than, say, releasing MGS2 Substance only a year or so after Sons of Liberty, I guess.

@ Im OK: Yeah, but by now, you should just expect a director's cut of the main MGS games a year after the original. I certainly don't run out and buy the original right away now.

Ehh? Why? Riddick was a fun game for sure but it sure as hell isn't worth remaking and without a movie tie-in it doesn't really make any sense from a business standpoint either. I'd rather see a sequel. Oh well.

Probably the best singleplayer FPS in recent years, next to halflife 2.

Ahh, OK. Thanks.

The Brain: It makes perfect sense from a business standpoint. The movie series is pretty much finished with Chronicles being a total crapfest; it's possibly the first time ever that a game was more critically acclaimed than the movie it was based on.

As it was only on Xbox though it's audience wasn't as widespread as it could've been though so doing a remake on the new systems gives the old game exposure to new people (there are a lot of people who own 360's who never owned an Xbox). Particularly on PS3, where there will be no Halo, this game could stand out.

If it does well, it could be the start of the movie franchise being reborn as a game franchise. If it doesn't, then it wasn't a huge risk because more than half the content is recycled. Newcomers get a brand new game and fans get a sort of expansion as well as the multiplayer that some people always wanted (I never missed it).

I'd love to see future games flesh out the Riddick universe without the cheesiness of the last movie. Get rid of the damn "Necromongers"!
