I am a fan of Grand Theft Auto. I am a HUGE fan of Ricky Gervais. Put the two together and what do you get? Pure, unbridled happiness, my friends. The politically incorrect comic will be appearing in GTA IV, sharing both his voice, and his motion capture work!
Gervais will be found in the Liberty City comedy club, where he will not only be performing material from his recent Fame tour (great show, get the DVD folks!), but three minutes of brand new stuff just for the game. Isn't that awesome? I think that's awesome. You should too.
"It's a first, which always interests me," stated Gervais. "It was shot in New York, and I got to wear a tight Lycra suit as part of the digital process. That wasn't so good. Unfortunately they captured the whole horror, except I look slightly tougher.
"It's seriously a big deal though. Games have outsold Hollywood for the past few years so it's nice to be a small part of that."
I didn't think I could be more eager to play GTA IV, but Rockstar has found a way to make this game even more of a neccessity. Well done, Rockstar. Well done indeed.
That's such a cool idea, I can't wait to see it.
Now we only need Dane Cook so we can run him over with the BF Injection.
Alright, this is pretty damn cool. His last DVD was hilarious. Good call Rockstar
All GTA4 needs now is a Karl Pilkington "Knob at Night" mission.
much like the film in The Darkness, very very cool.
I'd run Dane Cook over with a BF Injection. Can we get that as a mission, Rockstar? Thanks.
Like I've said to the last 20 news articles about GTA IV...I'm already sold!
Dangerous levels of DO WANT.
If there's an option to kill him with fire I'm in.
We're not going to kill him are we?
I love Ricky Gervais.
Must have Karl Pilkington and Steve Merchant in there too! Put them on the radio.
I'm going to just sit in the comedy clubs. I'm so overwhelmed with how awesome GTA
"If there's an option to kill him with fire I'm in."
Are you having a laugh? Is he having a laugh!?
Seriously, Ricky Gervais is awesome. Anyone who disagrees is WRONG as far as I'm concerned. Especially someone with an anime bunny avatar. ;P
Gawd, I hate Ricky Gervais with the intensity of 10,000 fiery suns. This news couldn't be any worse. :(
I second the hope that we'll be able to run his character over... repeatedly...
He's ok, very funny at times but his Simpsons episode sucked and so did the second series of Extras.
Never heard of him.
While we're on the topic of burning/stabbing/shooting/flaying Dane Cook, I feel it's my duty to humbly request that Ned Holness (aka Carlos Menica) be placed in the game for the same reasons.
I love it, I can't wait.
It'd be awesome if you'd do work for him, it would be nonsense, but I'd lol my ass off.
Never heard of the guy, but I love good comedy, so I can't wait to hear his stuff.
Ricky Gervais? Woot!
This game just gets better and better. They should give him a radio station in the next GTA. Or add it into the DLC package. I wonder if he'll do his dance. Ricky Gervais FTW!
If they were to give Gervais a radio channel, they'd HAVE to have Karl Pilkington on there as well.
WHOO! That’s some awesome news right there. I recently blew through every episode of Extras, and it was pure, unbridled win. It looks like GTA IV will be more of the same.
Heckling Ricky Gervais FTW
Wow this is awesome, Ricky is HILARIOUS!!!!!!
Anyone who hasn't done so already, buy his Podcast on iTunes, they are extremely funny.
I wonder if there are any hilarious lines he says, like ff you bump into him, or punch him.
fuck yeah =D
Jim, I assume you've listend to his Podcast? The one with Karl Pilkington?
Cool, let's hope the motion capture was him doing the Brent dance from the Office
FapfapfapUNST!
Ah meng lets hope Carlos Mencia is in it too homes :D
Gervais is brilliant.
If Ricky, Steve and Karl where one of the radio channels, I would never get out of the car! I still listen to all their old radio shows in my real car, to be able to do that in the game would be great. Good move Rockstar!!
*facepalm* I had respect for the good denizens of destructoid till I saw theses comments.
Seriously Im considering cancelling my 8 month old pre-order cause of his inclusion, there better be an option to kill him.
The guy can be funny, I've only seen him in "The Office", and "Extras". He seems to ride the line between funny and just increadably sad, awkward. Doesn't matter I'm not getting GTA IV to listen to a comedy act I'm there for the wanton destruction.
As for the people who were talking about radio personalities for GTA IV, I'd be happy to see Stephen Wright reprise his role from Reservoir Dogs as the best DJ ever.
This is the first thing about the game that has made me NEED it.
Now . . .
WTF is with all the Ricky Gervais hate? All three of his shows (The Ricky Gervais show podcast, the original British version of The Office, and Extras) have all been absolutely brilliant. If you don't like him, fine, but why would someone hate him and his fans so damned much?
And whoever said they should include Carlos Mencia . . . ugh. Shut up.
gervais is the shit. If you dislike his inclusion, then you're probably reading this article while watching a rerun of scrubs, hoping that supposed funny man zach braff will fly in through your open window and give you a quick tug job complete with cuddle.
Ricky Gervais is terrible, His jokes are not funny and he's possibly the worst comedian England has ever produced, Including Lenny Henry.
Give me Frankie Boyle over that asshole any day.
i hope you can shoot up the club and take that bugger gervias with you in a shower of bullets!! dream come true :D
@lostalaska
The whole awkward thing is, to a degree, the very point of his humor. David Brent and, to a lesser extent, his Extras character (I forget his name) were both awkward, pathetic, incredibly unlucky men. One thing I've always loved about his humor is that he manages to fairly accurately capture the selfish, uncomfortable, inadequate side of human nature. It helps to laugh at it, especially when those things are such a big aspect of, uh, my life. :)
Ricky gervais isnt funny
I, for one, do not approve. But as a buisness move, good job on Rockstar's part. I just want some David Cross :(
i think however i must say the the inclusions of these features even though they divert from the main aim(s) of the game they do add a sense that the city is living. i can imagine rockstar easily making DLC based on these side events. more comedians more music stations etc.
ricky gervias even though i dont like him has worldwide impact he is know on both us and UK/europe so it makes sense having him there... theres no point in having a UK only comedian like peter kay on there as their acts are regional and thus missing the mark.
i can only hope there are tonnes of side events other than the comedy club like this... i cant wait now :D
My roommate got me watching a few episodes of Extras, and I like the guy. It's not going to make me buy GTAIV any more than I already was, but it's a nice addition.
Dave Chapelle please.
carlos mencia, dave chappelle or dane cook i dont know who the hell is this guy but he doesnt look that funny at all
after dave chappelles gta skit you'ld at least of done something with him in a way. but then rockstar are english and while ricky is funny, he makes me cringe more than he makes me laugh. But then I prefer the Jerry Lewis/Lee Evans style of comedy.
To each thier own :)
I was seriously considering not buying this game, but now...
Anyone who doesn't like The Office (UK) is a wank. It's the same for people who don't like Arrested Development. Out of the people I know, it's only the brain-dead laughter-track sit-com loving retards who don't like those two shows.
Yet another reason to buy this game.
@AngelicLiver
Do you also hate puppies? and freedom?
I bet you do.
I fucking love the UK Office. Besides Arrested Development its my favorite show ever.
David Brent + GTA = WIN
He's hysterical. I can't wait to check out the comedy clubs in GTA IV.
I like his work, but I don't find his stand-up to be very good. I'm not sure what to make of this tbh, I think I'd prefer if he was in as a character you deal with and not as himself.
@ cainball
Ditto. I could not have said it better. His shows are not only good as comedies, but also manage to be good in a deeper, more serious way. The Christmas Special of The Office and some of Extras Season 2 (haven't seen the Christmas Special yet) really moved me. And the podcast is unbelievable!
@ Face
I haven't seen the stand-up yet, so maybe you're right. I think I'll start downloading some now . . .
Ricky Gervais is awesome. I wonder if they'll put out DLC to add new comics later on, that'd be awesome.
More fuel for his ego.
I'm amazed that the comments weren't full of pretentious dickwads acting all elitist about how Gervais's Office is "so much better" than the "diluted" American version. Bravo Dtoid for proving my expectations wrong. The man who birthed two brilliant versions of a simple concept can't be bad, so I'll be looking forward to his innclusion.
When I saw they were going to have comedy clubs in GTA I was pumped, but to know they will be putting actual comedians in them (along with the crazy folks that populate the city) makes it so much sweeter.
I haven't been this jazzed about a game releasing in a while. I can't wait for Monday night anymore...This stopped being fair in January...
