RFGO! Recording episode #16 tonight: Import gaming; OMG it's Chad's birthday! photo

You should know by now, dear listeners, that today is Chad Concelmo's birthday. As such, there's a pretty good chance he won't be on the show tonight, as he is obligated to make his annual return to the undersea dolphin kingdom he once called home. You see, before he became an Associate Editor here at Destructoid, the greatest podcast co-host ever was the ruler of a vast and secret land, hidden far beneath the briny depths where no mortal dare venture. A place called Chadlantis.

It wasn't until last January that we discovered him. Caught in one of our tuna nets on the company fishing trip, there was much debate as to whether he should be brought ashore or left to rule the sea. What would the dolphins do without their leader? More importantly, could mankind truly handle such awesomeness if he were to walk among us? It was a risk Niero was willing to take. After the signing of the great Robot-Dolphin Treaty of 2007, in which the creatures of the deep agreed to lend us their king 364 days out of the year in exchange for head-mounted laser cannons, we had a new editor.

Chad's final instruction to his bottlenosed followers was to continue their time-honored practice of transporting Japanese-only releases to the hardcore gamers of North America. If you've ever experienced the joy of impossibly hard shmups or batsh*t insane rhythm games, you owe these dolphins your grattitude and respect. So, have you? Tonight's show is all about import gaming. Did you break the tabs off of your SNES? Use a Game Genie to play Asian Genesis titles? Play a bunch of stuff most people have never even heard of? We sure did. Hit up the comments and tell us how hardcore you really are.

A big "Happy birthday" and a ton of less-than-threes to our amazing Mr. Concelmo.

Look closely at the text on that box. "No nightstand should be without one!"

True that! Expect to find one of those in your mailbox this week, Chad.

I had an import gameboy copy of some RPG called Uni III. One of my friends insisted it was the japanese version of final fantasy 3 for the snes.

I never took the plunge on import cartridges, mostly because I was young, had no money or information, and didn't know where the local import shoppes were. Since I acquired a Dreamcast, though, I've purchased 4 Japanese games, three of then through eBay: Vampire Chronicle, Super Street Fighter II X, Super Puzzle Fighter II X, and Rez.

I'm thinking about finding Super Mario Bros. 2 JPN for GBA (the Lost Levels.) There's not a whole boatload of import games I want that don't end up finding there way here. Oh, Tingle's Balloon Fight and the EU version of Freshly Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland are two more on my radar.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Concelmo!

I never had to import a game because everything I ever wanted from Japan had been brought over here. Except Oendan, although EBA is fun. Might have to get Oendan though...

Wait... well, this might not count. I recently bought a copy of Metroid II in the original box from the UK. Does that count?

With the release of Super Mario Bros: The lost levels on virtual console, do you guys think this will open the door for more unreleased games such as Japanese RPGS?

AgentMoo -

Do you mean, like, translated and all? I wouldn't hold my breath on it. The Lost Levels was probably pretty easy to bring over, since there isn't much text involved. On the other hand, I'd think that a game like Fire Emblem would be too cumbersome and costly to localize just to release it on the virtual console.

When the Neo Geo Pocket Color was still kicking I imported the english versions of Faselei and Last Blade(those huge black clamshell cases were neat). Well, I guess that's actually my only import experience not counting downloading Guilty Gear #Reload for the PC.

@lulzer, I am sure they had some that were either partially or fully translated that might not have been released for various reasons. Many projects die because the marketing team thinks there wont be a big enough demographic to sell to.

I did not know that.

So... somewhere out there, there could possibly exist a snes fire emblem in english? Or Mother 3?

My mind just exploded. It sounded like pop rocks.

I don't suppose you guys could be very nice on your podcast, and mention the best website that gives advice on how to play import games without breaking your PAL console?
