Once the controls are sorted I find the game to be more enjoyable than the 2d worms games.
So, erm... why not play the crap out of Reloaded? It had a shitty start, but now it's very much like Armageddon HD. The only annoying thing about it is 4 limit on worms in a team. I really loved 8 worms teams in earlier worms.
Btw, i know a lot of people, who enjoy 3d worms too. But this game is basically 3d+Mayhem in one pack, as far as i understand, with all the bad stuff still in, and 3d worms could work with a little more polishing. But not like this.
Worms 3D has a ton of fans and actually introduced the 2d games to a lot of people. I think they should keep going at it because a lot of people like them.
I disagree with this review but oh well I suppose. You have to do a bit of fiddling with the controls but once you do its plays great and has a really unique feel. I think you could have gone much more into what exactly you didn't feel worked.
The tutorial can be skipped if chosen, although I dont recommend that, its important to learn the controls. Im sorry to report that the story mode of Worms 3d has a shade brown, why?... From T17, its there for nostalgic value...
"...but the slow, plodding manner in which worms maneuver..." thats just simply not true. Well, they do move slow like every other game but you will be equipped with JetPacks, NinjaRopes and even Icarus Potions that will help you move around faster.
"...The camera view, even in first-person mode, doesn't allow for careful lining up of shots;..." Again, you are provided with a default third person view, a first person view and a bird's eye view in which in any camera position, you can access theses with a touch of a key, you can control the camera to better line up your shot on top of that you are provided with the tool Binoculars, which will show you the exact angle and power needed to line up a shot, in my experience online is a much underused tool.
"There's a decent amount of customization involved,..." Yes, besides decking out your worms you can also create your own bazooka, grenade and airstrikes and bring them to multiplayer against other people.
I did like the game and there's much more to it. For the gamer's first time playing this game, theres a lot of content to cover.
Remember Reloaded? Still hasn't been fixed so they could push this half-hearted effort out the door. Even simple things like the interface size and chat system have gone untouched.
I didn't really mind the camera that much. It wasn't great, but 3D games often have camera issues.
Worse were two things that Team17 is (to me) infamous for:
1) Unlocking material used in multiplayer requires completing challenges in a single player campaign. An annoyance in any game where it occurs, it is doubly annoying here because the single player campaign is always the worst part of a Worms game. These are games you buy and immediately play against friends in. You don't buy them because you have a killer urge to jetpack through hoops and collect a special crate by turn 2, then kill four invulnerable-for-this-match AI enemies by turn 3. And the single player campaigns are in no small part terrible because of problem #2 below...
2) Terrible AI. Idiot-savant, really. If an attack only needs math to land, the AI can land it, even if it involves firing a rocket against a 90-mph gale and having it pass through a tiny gap on the return, only to detonate next to worm in just the right spot to send it into oblivion. On the other hand, if it isn't a single perfect shot (and sometimes this happens with a perfect shot), the computer might as well be trying to commit suicide. I think Worms always had this as well, as I still remember the AI's ability to land perfectly timed cluster bombs in the first game.
My thoughts exactly. I expected it to be like Armageddon but they've changed the physics too much, made the maps smaller (or they feel smaller), the interface is just ugly and clunky and like Darren said I hate being restricted to only having 4 worms per team.
Worms peaked with Armageddon and the franchise hasn't reached that high since then.
I remember enjoying the Worms 3D demo so I'll probably pick this up if its included in a Steam sale. I'm a little afraid of getting burned again like with Reloaded but at least I didn't pay that much since it was included in the Steam summer sale.
