I CAN'T SPEAK FOR THE GAMING PRESS, as they tend to be pretty varied in the types of games they play. However, within the regular gaming sphere, I feel like there's a very vocal niche of gamers who play primarily single-player JRPGs, and they do not seem to like having MMO elements in their games. I've heard countless hate for FFXII when I personally felt like it did a great job of bringing MMO elements into a singleplayer package. They tend to have a very narrow set of criteria for what constitutes great story, too.
Of course, I can hardly back this up with concrete evidence, but I feel like I see this "JRPG purist" type on forums everywhere. Just sayin'.
everyone i know that has it is enjoying it, it may not be perfect but its good enough for me. can't wait for the sequel in 5 years lol.
now to read words!
Remember that there has been a bit of a drought for JRPG fans such as myself. I'm sure that this game wouldn't seem as good to me if there was a steadier stream of quality JRPGs to the PS3. The last good current gen JRPG I played was Tales of Vesperia. Although it should be taken into consideration that I am a complete sucker for games with character customization.
You shouldn't have to structure your review so it placates the people who were so certain this game was going to be good. Also, why don't the other publications that gave this game a poor score get any credit, when most of them scored it similarly? You shouldn't have to distance yourself from other poor reviews if you thought the game was deserving of a lower score.
It's a shame when it's so hard to stop the hype train even in the face of reality. It's fine that you had some fun with the game, and I was certainly hoping for it to be good too, but people need to stop falling over themselves apologizing for poor exclusives because they don't think the fanboys can take it. Good review though, keep it up!
@Ramage Mendez
You could always play a better game with your friends, no need to apologize for WKC...
@thanes06
What's that supposed to mean? A game catches breaks for being the first in a forced trilogy now?
I've never seen anyone attack through walls, not that there are very many walls to notice this on, definitely never seen the crazy distances thing, not to sure about dealt/received damage, it seems all pretty average depending on what skill was being used and what element they were weak or strong to, or even what kinds of attacks slashing/smashing/thrust.
Though I totally agree that the game is FAR to easy, which in it self is worth a whole point or two from the score, which is sad. Yes the online could be streamlined as well, in fact they should make MP separate from SP.
You never played the game yet tell players how to like or hate something. You do realize this game is like 3 years old or so right (it might be even older). So this game was in development in PS3s earlier years. Food for thought but I have a feeling you won't be doing much of that in your life time.
It could be considered an MMO as well, though, but that's only if you actually play the multiplayer. It's actually both, a sort of genre-blurring experiment. It's clearly not an MMO if you decided to play the single-player exclusively.
Level 5 is starting to slip. Erp.
this games combat system is likeable to the ff7 combat system. its not real time combat, more like active time in 3d with a circle instead of a bar, instead of equiping materia you equip skills and spells in 21 slots.
the story was decent once you get far enough into it, but i didn't like how the main character gets blinded over a princess just because she talked to him one time and now he's her only hope. all the other characters i actually liked. with a few twists and turns and a lead up to the sequel.
online is a blast grinding with friends and getting all sorts of weird awesome loot drops, it has alot of depth for me and i'll still be playing it for a while after i'm done with ff13. i read a post already of guy who spent over $120 just on the georama dlc in the game. i don't like the idea of buying a one time ticket for $5 to change your characters looks though, thats bullshit.
i think a 6 is a bit too low for someone who said he enjoyed it. but i guess that's why i don't trust reviews and reviewers, i trust word of mouth.
also, whatever happened to the two person reviews? those were actually really good. but i guess me saying that really means they're bad.
I'm not saying he didn't like it, or that other people can't like it, but there were some subtle word choice that lead me to think that he was trying to get in front of people who expected this game to be good before they played it. The Heavy Rain review is an example of people getting all ruffled when a game they've been expecting for a long time gets a score they don't like and, unlike that game, WKC has been generally panned.
White Knight Chronicles came out Christmas Day of 2008 in Japan, making it a little more than a year old, which is hardly long enough to excuse it for any technical shortcomings it may have. Please, be civil next time.
bring on WKC2!
