Review: Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 photo

When Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was released, fans jumped for joy at the long awaited return of the Marvel Vs. series. With the addition of brand new characters, a new mechanic called "X-factor," and the promise of even more characters in the form of DLC, this appeared to be the fighting game to get. However, not even a year later, amidst complaints of how "broken" X-factor was and how certain characters were overpowered, Capcom responded with the announcement of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. As a budgeted upgrade to the "vanilla" version, there was some hostility towards Capcom's releasing this game to cash in on the flaws of the first installment.

Now that the game has launched, I've been fortunate to spend enough time with it to form an opinion on how it stacks up as a new installment in this franchise. Is this game a legitimate update that is worth your money, or should this have been an optional DLC purchase as many people were demanding?

Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 (PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Released: November 15, 2011
MSRP: $39.99

I'm going to start out by saying that I am a HUGE fan of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Whereas most of the other people on staff have probably played this game casually, or got into it at launch but tapered off as other big releases hit, I have been playing it non-stop since its release. From my experience with the first installment, while the roster was plentiful, in order to play the game competitively, there were only a few characters I had to choose from -- Wekser, Dormammu, and Spencer was my team, and those are all characters quite familiar in high-level play.

You can imagine my excitement that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 now boasts 12 new characters to try and incorporate into my team -- six from the Capcom universe (Frank West, Strider, Nemesis, Firebrand, Phoenix Wright, and Vergil) and six from Marvel (Nova, Rocket Raccoon, Iron Fist, Hawkeye, Dr. Strange, and Ghost Rider). Characters such as Phoenix Wright, Strider, and Frank West, were highly anticipated, while others like Nova, Iron Fist, and Rocket Raccoon seemed obscure but blend in perfectly.

The first observation about these new characters is that they are all very unique, which I see as a major plus. None of them play alike and they have very unique styles of combat. Phoenix Wright needs to collect evidence during battle in order to become a useful character, but just like in his games, Wright's expert use of evidence can completely destroy an opponent when used at the right time. Frank West, previously seen in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, must take pictures to raise his level and allow access to certain moves and more powerful weapons.

On the Marvel side, Iron Fist is a highly grounded character who relies on "rekka"-style motions to perform combos (think Fei Long), while Dr. Strange is all about luring his opponents into a false sense of security, zoning them, then catching them in an trap. Each character is so different that it makes discovering how to play them a game in itself, which is something that I feel was slightly lacking in the original cast of characters. I found myself spending hours in training mode, playing with each character and learning how to fully utilize each one. If Capcom's goal was to add some variety in gameplay, then they definitely succeeded.

They also decided to revisit the old roster to give them much needed balancing. Certain characters who went largely un-played received new attributes that made them viable on any team. Captain America in particular seems like someone I definitely want to use now that he has a double jump and an "off the ground" (OTG) Shield Slash that lets him maximize his damage potential. Ryu has been powered up with new types of Hadoukens in invisible and multi-hit flavors as well as a new hyper that definitely allows for new styles of play. Felicia is a character that I would have loved to see used more, and now with an added ground bounce to her Air Delta Kick and OTG Sand Splash, I can't wait to see how she fares against the rest of the cast.

As far as the more popular cast goes, none of them seem to have been completely nerfed. While Capcom did fix certain aspects like invincibility on some characters' assist types, those characters who were used often in the vanilla version are still just as good. In fact, some of them like Storm and Magneto even got new tricks to play with. It remains to be seen how the old characters will match up with the new cast once people start playing the game competitively, but from my time with the game, it seems like Capcom made an effort to buff under-powered characters just enough to give them a chance against those who were already good.

Concerning the game modes, there isn't much here even compared to the original version. A welcome addition is spectator mode, which was admittedly lacking in MvC3. There is also the promise of a post-launch game mode titled "Heroes and Heralds" which allows for attaching attributes to your team such as parries, invincible assists, and projectile invincibility via collectible upgrade cards. Unfortunately, that mode isn't on disc, so I haven't had as much time with it as I'd have hoped.

In fact, what comes on disc is slightly disappointing. The post-launch "Event Mode" that was a part of MvC3 is nowhere to be found, and while I didn't play it as much, the game still feels lacking without it. The only mode on disc besides Arcade, Versus, and Online is a Mission mode meant to train your in how to play each character. However, this mode only scratches the surface of each character; Capcom should take a few hints from the BlazBlue series in how to create a useful training mode that is more educational and intuitive to use. Finally, for those who have an MvC3 save file, you get a non-competitive Galactus mode unlocked at the start that's fun for about five minutes.

Then there are the changes that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 brings to the combat engine. First off, the Delayed Hyper Combo (DHC) glitch has been removed, so if you were one to rely on that tactic, get ready to rethink your technique a bit. The other big change involves the highly controversial X-factor. Many in the fighting game scene disliked the presence of X-factor, since it allowed for one character to take out a whole team if played correctly. In Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, it seems like the damage done by characters in X-factor has been toned down a bit, and the length of time spent in X-factor shortened. On the other hand, X-Factor can now be let off in the air, which will surely encourage experimentation and subsequent innovation in use of the technique. So while it remains to be seen how much these changes to X-factor will affect high-level play, at first glance, it seems like things have been adjusted accordingly.

For those who have yet to play Marvel vs. Capcom 3, seeing as how this game is being sold for $40, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 offers a budget entry into a fast-paced fighting game full of unique characters and fun gameplay. There is no better time than now to give the series a try. For those who have been playing the game since launch, the new characters will rejuvenate your interest in this game and challenge your imagination in trying to incorporate them into your established gameplay. The only downside to this game is that what comes on disc seems lacking.

In making the inevitable comparison with Super Street Fighter 4, things don't look too good for UMvC3. Super Street Fighter 4 offered much more content, such as team battles and a replay channel, for a reduced price, while Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 doesn't do the same. Whereas SSF4 seemed like a bargain to most, UMvC3 definitely feels like a $40 game. With only a couple of modes to choose from and a less than stellar training mode, I had hoped Capcom would have stepped up their game and given us just a little more. Still, at this price, it's hard to complain.

Regardless, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 represents a new age of heroes that will take you for a ride if you choose to make the investment. My greatest joy with the Marvel series is discovering new combinations of fighters and designing teams such as the "Raccoon City," "Devil May Cry," and "Guys with Swords" teams. With this extended cast of highly viable characters, the only thing holding you back from picking a group of characters you enjoy is your imagination. While this hastily released upgrade definitely has some room for improvement, there is absolutely enough new content to warrant the purchase.

Final Verdict:
8.0

Great: 8s are impressive efforts in their *genre* with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won't astound the most discerning players, but is worth everyone's time and cash.

This is only worth buying if you don't already have MvC3, or really like being hosed by trading it in and picking up a mildly enhanced version. If they did this as a $15 add-on like with SSFIV AE, totally fine.

Tron was pretty badly nerfed.

And I bought the first game just to play as Tron, Zero and Hsien-Ko/LeiLei

Color me pissed. Not buying this game since it doesn't seem very well balanced still...

I said from the day that the original MvC3 was announced that I would buy it if Phoenix Wright were included as a playable character. Now that that's happened, I fully intend on picking this up at some point. My only problem: my only real experience with fighters like this comes from standing in an arcade and just haphazardly mashing buttons. You mentioned that the training mode was lackluster. Do I even stad a chance of having any fun if I get this, or do I have a long future of never winning ahead of me?

Gator, you kind of pick up fast on this game, it is pretty easy to get good at the game. The original mvc3 was my first fight and I got that down in about a week. May I suggest Wolverine's drill claw?

@gator The game still has "Simple" and "Normal" modes. Simple is a blast to play for people like me that aren't exactly "good" at fighting games. The best part is that you can you switch between them whenever you feel that you are ready for normal.

Thanks but no thanks Capcom. Marvel vs Capcom 3 was SERIOUSLY lacking and was not worth the 11 year wait. The new characters on the Marvel side were pretty weak, there were so many other Marvel characters that DESERVED to be in that game instead of *cough* Modok, Taskmaster, etc. So you try to "fix" the problem by adding 12 more fighters (again the new Marvel additions, while not bad, just dont deserve to be in there at this time), and you STILL lack game modes, content, etc. I'll be keeping my $40 as I'm not paying $110 (thanks for making the "collectors edition" worthless) for the "ULTIMATE" version of this sub par fighter. Im sure the sheep will buy it anyway.

@gator - you should be able to button mash to success with simple mode on, but the greater reward comes from learning the combos and specials then knowing when to use them :p

I'll stop being captain obvious now, but yeah go go get it!

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 controls like molasses. I've played plenty of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (I know, it IS broken and I do try to play nicely with others) and I have to say that 2 was at the very least incredibly responsive to my commands. It ended up feeling as if I was fighting more with the game itself instead of my oppenents.

I just wish that they'd fucking release it on PC.
I know Japan doesn't have a large PC market but not only does Capcom make FAR more money on home console releases in the US/Europe than they do in Japan (and MvC3 didn't come to arcades.) but US/Europe also has a fairly decent PC consumer market. Not to mention that if you look at US/Euro developers they almost always release major titles on Xbox/PS3 AND PC. But Japan almost never releases on PC. For a franchise that is so heavily oriented towards the western market (and FAR more popular in the west than japan) they sure aren't doing a great job adapting to western ideas.

I swear I read, back around the time of Street Fighter 4, that Capcom wouldn't be doing the whole slight upgrade versions like what they did in the previous eras with SF2 and Alpha series. Then they do it with SF4 and MvC3.. Still, as much as this would be something I would like to get, I still feel cheated by this version. Sorry Capcom.. not buying. I'll avoid Capcom v Tekken until the obligatory 'Super' version comes out now too.

I really, really want this, but my wallet is super thin from Arkham City, Super Mario 3D Land and Jurassic Park. I still gotta get Uncharted 3, too. Damn. =/ I loved MvC3, but after the PSN debacle not many of my friends went back to the game. Hmmm... Maybe that will change with this "ultimate" edition. Also, spectator mode(should have been in the first)! Who am I kidding?! I will find a way to get this game! Anyway, sweet review, Tactix! I mean, Jesse! =)

Doesn't feel completely worth $40, but you still get more than the original :( Gameplay wise though, fantastic.

Pass. Despite all the drama, I would probably bite if they had a couple more interesting modes and if Mega Man or X was a character. Hell, if there was more than ONE character I care about being added, I might take notice. As is, spending 40 bucks on Strider hardly seems worth it to me.. even if he was always a favorite of mine in MvC2.

My preordered copy should arrive on Friday (goddamn Euro release dates).

I don't really see the deal with the new versions of Capcom games and whatnot. Enthusiasts got their money's worth and then some with the original either way and everybody else probably makes their decision based on what characters got added...or something?
Either way, I don't see a problem with these new versions of fighters other than maybe not giving the original enough time to breathe and develop.

MvC3 felt like a $40 game at launch as well. Good review, capcom has pretty much lost me as a customer with all these half-assed "expansions" for fighting games. I look to Blazblue or soul calibur for my fighting fix now.

I miss beating up nice cars in the snes street fighter days, and 100-man kumite was awesome on the psp...other than that the current generation of the series has gone stale for me.

I play MvC3 constantly, so I had no problem with preordering this. The new characters look too much fun to pass up ('specially Nova and Rocket Raccoon), the changes seem to be pertinent and well-thought-out, and they made X-factor less retarded. The only thing I don't like so much is the new-style health bar :P

I bought the first one and I'm going to buy this one, ripped off or not. Before MvC3 I wasn't really into fighters, MvC3 was the first one I got deep into. It's easy to get into and really fun to me. I don't know why people are raging so hard over this game, SSFIV did not get the same backlash if I recall. Well whatever, silly fleshlings.

SSFIV got the same sort of complaints when it was announced and people felt cheated, but once it came out all that sort of died down.
I think UMVC3 feels just as solid as the jump to SSFIV, personally, but I'm also happy with the current modes without adding team battle/tournaments.
And I also already own UMVC3, so I guess this review really isn't for me anyways. :D

This game doesn't deserve a better score over 7.5 . Lol , im sure the netcode will be shitty again and barely unplayable at all .

For 40 buck + tax , I will put in in skullgirl instead . Skullgirl will not have easy touch of death like umvsc3 have already . Skullgirl have GGPO , something crapcom have always shitty excuse to not put in their game . To conclude , Skullgirl is a deeper game over umvsc3 . The casual noob approach make me sick

Dumbass.

and Lol that GGPO=LOL DEEPER GAYME DURR. you obiviously know fuck all about fighters, because you would know that you can't even compare an unreleased game to a released game in terms of deeper play. Have you played Skullgirls? I got the privelige too, and i can assure you that it's about as deep as KOF2002UM, which isnt a /bad/ thing.

so yeah, either back up your claims w/ research (which is hypocritical of me to say because i have none to give other than a few links of how people think of the game) or GTFO with your belief that GGPO makes games better, because in reality, it /doesn't/.
