Review: The Simpsons Arcade Game photo

Any gamer of a certain age will be able to bore you extensively talking about two particular arcade games: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Simpsons. The classic TMNT game arrived on Xbox Live Arcade years ago, but as with many licensed arcade games, it seemed unlikely we'd ever see The Simpsons hit a digital platform.

Sometimes, however, the legal red tape can be cut through, and nostalgia wins the day. The Simpsons Arcade is back, and gamers of a certain age can once again bore the world.

The Simpsons Arcade Game (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade [reviewed])
Developer: Konami, Backbone Entertainment
Publisher: Konami
Released: February 3, 2012 (XBLA) / February 7, 2012 (PSN)
MSRP: 800 Microsoft Points (XBLA) / $9.99 (PSN)

The Simpsons Arcade first hit bowling alleys and leisure centers in 1991, back before the TV show got legitimately funny. The highly contrived plot sees Maggie replace her pacifier with a diamond, which Waylon Smithers is trying to steal for Mr. Burns because of reasons. Rather than remove the diamond, Smithers decides to steal an entire baby, prompting the rest of the Simpsons clan to give chase.

Part of the joy of The Simpsons Arcade is in just how ridiculous it is. When we were children, nobody considered the implications of a bespectacled man (wearing an inexplicable cape) joyfully kidnapping a child, or the randomness of Mr. Burns having an entire army of goons that try to kill a whole family -- including an eight-year-old girl -- for want of a diamond that he could likely have easily afforded. In fact, with the amount of money he wasted on trying to actively murder one of his employees, Mr. Burns could have bought the diamond outright for a lot less.

Not to mention the fact that both Smithers and Mr. Burns sound like Peter Lorre as opposed to themselves. Oh, and Marge's weapon -- a vacuum cleaner -- looks woefully sexist in a modern light. It's a true highlight of this game to examine just how insane it actually is, despite us all taking it for granted back in the day.

Using the same engine as TMNT, Konami's classic coin guzzler is a straightforward, simplistic beat-em-up, and some players may be surprised by just how rudimentary the action is. Playing as either Bart, Lisa, Homer or Marge (who is still the best character, thanks to the reach of her vacuum), the only real commands are walking, jumping, and hitting. Pressing jump followed by attack creates a diagonal kick, while pressing the two buttons together causes a more powerful maneuver. If two players attack together, they can perform team attacks. There are also rare weapon drops, such as a slingshot or bowling ball, and a few trash cans to pick up and fling, but otherwise the eight stages consist of walking, punching, and getting punched a lot.

It almost seems redundant to say that a twenty-year-old game has aged, but it's a warning players need to be reminded of. This was a game designed around killing the player as cheaply as possible in order for an arcade machine to grow fat on quarters, so the simplistic combat is married to frustratingly overwhelming odds that were designed to test patience and pockets instead of skill.

To counteract this on a console, Konami has allowed players to customize their own virtual credits. The default is forty, which is more than enough to beat the game, and a team of players can either share a single credit pool or have their own. There are also difficulty settings and a one-life survival mode, and a stage select screen is added as new levels are unlocked.

Other extras include sound tests and character screens, as well as the ability to unlock a Japanese ROM of the game once the American version has been beaten. There are also options to smooth over the traditionally blocky graphics and toggle the screen size, though I much prefer the defaults. The game is nicely presented in a virtual arcade cabinet, which looks better than the screenshots in this review imply, and you can choose to remove it if you wish. Once you add online play and leaderboards into the mix, you've gotten a definitive version of a game still beloved by many gamers who fondly remember it.

Fondly remembering The Simpsons Arcade is the caveat, though, as nostalgia is a key component to enjoyment. Objectively, by today's standards, The Simpsons Arcade is not very good. It's a brainless button-masher that is beaten through sheer attrition, and is so numbingly repetitive that one's thumb will feel arthritic despite the incredibly short length. To anybody playing this game for the first time, it's not going to be looked upon favorably in the least.

However, Konami didn't release it for people new to the game. This is for those who lost their pocket money trying to get past that infuriating Krusty balloon, who made it all the way to Smithers before being obliterated by one of his thousand bombs, and who still remember Princess Kashmir as a legitimate Simpsons reference. For them, this is a loving HD re-release of a game that's very dear to their hearts. For such people, playing The Simpsons Arcade is a joy that no amount of aging can quite take away.

Final Verdict:
7.0

Good: 7s are well-above average games that definitely have an enthusiastic audience within their *genre*. Some might lack replay value, could be too short, or has are some hard-to-ignore faults. Nevertheless, the experience is still very fun.

I thought, for a second, I would have had to scream at you, because I felt for some reason this game was going to get a 2 from you. I totally agree with a 7 though. The game is good, but not super great. still for nos-bombs, you can't beat it.

I'm still shocked I'm getting this for free. Guess it makes up for all the lunch money I spent on it over the 3 years my small town pizza place had it. Seriously went hungry so many times, it was torture too, being in the pizza place.

I'll admit I was a little fearful of seeing a 2/10 or 4/10 (it's a 21-year old game). But here the score doesn't really matter because as the article says, if you're into nostalgia, grab it. Haven't played it before, might be better to pass.

Can't wait for this! Only problem is Jak and Daxter HD collection is coming out the same day. Ugh. Still, grabbing this free with Playstation Plus more than makes up for that.

It might have been more but when I was a kid I spent 10$ worth of quarters beating this game in a convenience store of all places.

I'll gladly pay 10$ to experience it again and again...and again and again. I shit my pants I tell you.

Actually, for me, its TMNT and X-Men.. And Spider-Man actually, so when the fuck will someone release that one? (also, wouldn't mind seeing a re-release of Sega's Spider-Man game, the one that saw Peter actually taking pictures to make money.. That game was kinda fun its its own way too)

Nice, and honest, review. I bet I have "paid" several hundred dollars worth of quarters for this game already.

As much nostalgia as I have for this game, I've learned some games are best to never replay - you risk losing that nostalgia when you realize how the game was not that great to begin with, and is now pretty bad. I was considering replaying this...and maybe one day I will, but probably not.

I never got much of chance to play arcade games because I didn't have much money, but once my sister got a whole bunch of quarters and let me play the Simpsons Arcade for a bit. I got 4th place or something in highscores, it's one of those happy childhood memories I will always cherish.

I've waited forever for this. I consider this better than most beat-em-ups due simply to the variety of the levels and enemies. Yes, it's simplistic, but the game includes lots of one-off enemies specific to certain stages or even one part of a stage (firemen in the streets, teacup dudes at Krustyland, zombies in the graveyard).

Furthermore, there are some neat interactions in the environment. In Krustyland, for example, you can stand on a concession stand counter and Otto will supply you with sodas to throw at enemies. Stand too close to the gorilla cage on the other hand, and you'll get a nasty smack. There's no getting around that the game is pretty mindless (was reminded of that playing it at MAGfest this year), but it does have a certain appeal and the variety does wonders mitigating that.

It may be little more than a quarter-devouring nostalgia trip, but it's nice to finally have it available on home consoles after 20 years of waiting. For anyone who's never played it, know that it's a short, sweet trip well worth the asking price. For anyone who has, what the hell are you waiting for?

How far have the beat em up genre gotten by today's standard? Not very right, something can in my belief only be dated when it has been refined and innovated upon, something that the beat em up has had little of, so within the design of the genre and or this game, it is not dated, so I ask, do you compare this to your average shooter in order to call this game dated, or some other game perhaps./rant

That being said, can't wait to pick this up, played this game for the first time 5 years ago in a Rom and was a glorious time indeed.

For some reason, it's always driven me crazy that this (and other Simpsons merchandise of the day) gave Bart a blue shirt, when he's always worn red. I see that much isn't going to change...

...ironically enough, that was one thing Acclaim managed to get right. Who'd of thunk it?

Still attempting to buy the actual arcade cabinet from a local campground. I don't think they make any money from it with the shitty people that go there. All they play is air hockey and bad racing games.

I still remember hearing the theme for the first time walking into a local pizza shop. Compared to the garbled digitized voices on the Genesis the opening "The Simpsons..." amazed me.

@Wrath

I'm sure it will show it's age in terms of gameplay when compared with the likes of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim vs The World, it should still be fun though.

...also, I really wish Scott Pilgrim had online multiplayer!

I only sort of like this game, I found it slow compared to other Konami beat em ups like Vendetta or Ninja Turtles, but the early Simpsons stuff, we're talking the first two or three seasons maybe, is worth playing for. It shows just how creative and great a licensed game could be, especially when you consider that the show wasn't on for long when this came out.

@Wrath and Pride: forget todays standard.. as much as i love this game for nostalgia purposes, but its gameplay was tired a few years after its release.

go play aliens vs predator, the punisher, violent storm, guardian heroes, battle circuit, armored warriors, streets of rage 2, final fight 3, three dirty dwarves, undercover cops, or the dungeons and dragons games....

as much as i enjoy going back to play x-men, sengoku 3, ninja turtles, and the simpsons arcade games.. they are easily the most mundane of that era. the environments are the least interactive, you cant auto grab your enemies, there are little to no weapons, and the combos are the most plain.

as for comparing them to todays standards, lets not forget that there are 3d beat em ups as well. most of them arent that good, but die hard arcade, dynamite cop, zombie revenge, spikeout, and urban reign are all nice games. in many ways... yakuza, arkham asylum, arkham city, and captain america are the best modern representation of the genre (i would kill for a streets of rage that borrows from arkham's combat system).

either way, i agree with jim's score. i might even give it a 6 or 6.5 due to the fact that its 10 bucks and i dont know how much more ill play through it.
