I'll be getting this free as a Playstation Plus member, so hurray!
Can't wait for this! Only problem is Jak and Daxter HD collection is coming out the same day. Ugh. Still, grabbing this free with Playstation Plus more than makes up for that.
I'll gladly pay 10$ to experience it again and again...and again and again. I shit my pants I tell you.
Actually, for me, its TMNT and X-Men.. And Spider-Man actually, so when the fuck will someone release that one? (also, wouldn't mind seeing a re-release of Sega's Spider-Man game, the one that saw Peter actually taking pictures to make money.. That game was kinda fun its its own way too)
As much nostalgia as I have for this game, I've learned some games are best to never replay - you risk losing that nostalgia when you realize how the game was not that great to begin with, and is now pretty bad. I was considering replaying this...and maybe one day I will, but probably not.
Furthermore, there are some neat interactions in the environment. In Krustyland, for example, you can stand on a concession stand counter and Otto will supply you with sodas to throw at enemies. Stand too close to the gorilla cage on the other hand, and you'll get a nasty smack. There's no getting around that the game is pretty mindless (was reminded of that playing it at MAGfest this year), but it does have a certain appeal and the variety does wonders mitigating that.
It may be little more than a quarter-devouring nostalgia trip, but it's nice to finally have it available on home consoles after 20 years of waiting. For anyone who's never played it, know that it's a short, sweet trip well worth the asking price. For anyone who has, what the hell are you waiting for?
That being said, can't wait to pick this up, played this game for the first time 5 years ago in a Rom and was a glorious time indeed.
...ironically enough, that was one thing Acclaim managed to get right. Who'd of thunk it?
As long as you don't mind getting a lot of Adventure games and PsOne Classics, PS+ is worth it.
I will browse over it for sure and see everything that I will get but I might just buy the game for $10 as a lot of the PS+ free stuff doesn't really interest me, even though it is a sweet deal.
@Wrath
I'm sure it will show it's age in terms of gameplay when compared with the likes of Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim vs The World, it should still be fun though.
...also, I really wish Scott Pilgrim had online multiplayer!
Anyone remember that old 4 player arcade G.I. Joe game? That was the best G.I. Joe game ever, I want that next.
go play aliens vs predator, the punisher, violent storm, guardian heroes, battle circuit, armored warriors, streets of rage 2, final fight 3, three dirty dwarves, undercover cops, or the dungeons and dragons games....
as much as i enjoy going back to play x-men, sengoku 3, ninja turtles, and the simpsons arcade games.. they are easily the most mundane of that era. the environments are the least interactive, you cant auto grab your enemies, there are little to no weapons, and the combos are the most plain.
as for comparing them to todays standards, lets not forget that there are 3d beat em ups as well. most of them arent that good, but die hard arcade, dynamite cop, zombie revenge, spikeout, and urban reign are all nice games. in many ways... yakuza, arkham asylum, arkham city, and captain america are the best modern representation of the genre (i would kill for a streets of rage that borrows from arkham's combat system).
either way, i agree with jim's score. i might even give it a 6 or 6.5 due to the fact that its 10 bucks and i dont know how much more ill play through it.
