I really hope that this does well, as the entire concept intrigues me.
Thousands? Really? You can build a rig that plays any game out there at higher-than-xbox resolutions for like $700.
Then yah, I'd add it to the array of consoles on my TV.
but yeah i'm with sqlrob. If they let me have access to all the games for twenty a month (like blockbuster gaming pass) than I'd willingly shell it out.
i like the notion that if i pay for a game, i own that game and can play it when i want to, server be damned.
it seems that with this servive, you're paying full retail price for a game you're only renting and has no resale value whatsoever.
why should i support a service that only allows me to stream games and record gameplay?
is this service free now or what?
is this console gonna get any exclusive games to make any future consumers jump in just to play it?
can i somehow stream my music to these streaming games if i don't wanna hear the same techno or orchestra music over and over?
is their a friends list system?
is their a cheevo/trophy/rewards system?
can i send messages to any friends if that other question is yes?
is the set-top box update ready/future proof?
is or will 3d be implemented?
camera device video chat?
how often is my game save data saved or do i have to do it myself?
motion gaming perhaps?
what about dlc/add-ons (if you can even call it that), would i have to pay for that extra content?
how about mmo's? can this service support that kind of game?
how about store sales, will there be any? seeing as they are really only paying for one game then copying it for you to play on a server.
how about game updates, can i expect that are games updated same day as when the publishers releases the update? (seeing as i have no control over this i think).
what about single player games i don't want updated if an update comes, do i have any control over this?
how about sound and or headphone support? (sometimes i want to play games really loud at night without waking anyone up so i put in the headphones and jam on!)
hacking, how secure is the system and serice from cheaters, exploiters, identity thieves?
and last but not least, what is there to differentiate from the rest, what does this have that i cna't get from live, psn and/or the pc platforms (not counting recording dick measuring contest's).
these are just some of the questions that need to be asked and answered. for the consumer, because knowledge is power.
If you have a low end gaming PC you should avoid OnLive.
i understand why no score could be added, don't worry about that Ben.
If I want to play a game on my TV, why the hell would I buy a console for PC gaming? I don't get this - clearly I'm not the target audience.
And damn, Qraze really laid it all out there. Well done indeed.
This is my experience with OnLive.
Despite the fact my internet is more than capable of running it.
I'd rather not be blocked from every single one of my games because of arbitrary reasons that aren't my own fault.
"Well, I don't need this, I've already got a 360".
I've played around with the service and I think it has a lot of potential. The streaming tech seems solid (i was playing FEAR 2 on my laptop, using the Wi-Fi beta and only recieved some slight lag, not enough to be game-breaking) and I think there's a real market for this.
I haven't seen many comments along the line in this thread, but typically most people don't have a B.A. gaming rig, or the patience to keep up with the latest hardware, drivers, tweaks to get the game running etc..So this can be the way to go with PC gaming for a lot of people.
That said, I have yet to buy a single game for the service, despite some really good sales, for 2 reasons:
1) Selection: there are only a few games, and the ones I really like I've already played on my 360
2) Value: I don't want to pay 60 bucks for a game I don't technically own.Especially since the future for OnLive is so uncertain right now.
I think OnLive could really benefit from a subscription-style service. Think of it like an MMO, only instead of paying for 1 game, you have 50 or hundreds of possibilities. You could even do tiers, where lower tiers at cheaper prices would give you access to maybe 3 games per month, higher tiers could give you 10 or 20, or an unlimited tier. Now, THAT would be sweet.
They do have rentals though, so that's good. Interested in seeing how this goes.
Okay, lemme see if I can answer some of the questions you posed through experience with the service:
--why should i support a service that only allows me to stream games and record gameplay?
Totally up to you. You don't have to install games, the game save is stored on their end so you can continue no matter where you are.
--is this service free now or what?
Yes, it is free to have the service and play demos, etc.
--is this console gonna get any exclusive games to make any future consumers jump in just to play it?
They talked before launch about having exclusives in the future, and have previews of upcoming games/service features in the actual service in the form of videos.
--can i somehow stream my music to these streaming games if i don't wanna hear the same techno or orchestra music over and over?
Not currently.
--is their a friends list system?
Yes, and you can see their friends and their brag clips, and what games they own.
--is their a cheevo/trophy/rewards system?
Not yet.
--can i send messages to any friends if that other question is yes?
Yes.
--is the set-top box update ready/future proof?
in the review here, they said it is.
--is or will 3d be implemented?
Again, they said it will be in this review.
--camera device video chat?
Not yet, but I don't see why it couldn't be implemented in the future.
--how often is my game save data saved or do i have to do it myself?
You can save in-game, but most games I'v tried used a save-state system as well so you can jump right into the action again.
--motion gaming perhaps?
The future accessory possibility seems to be nearly endless, since the processing is on their end, and you are simply the client end, so I fucking hope so (heres to VR!).
--what about dlc/add-ons (if you can even call it that), would i have to pay for that extra content?
Depends on the game developer/publisher, just like pricing is.
--how about mmo's? can this service support that kind of game?
I'd love to see some boss mmo's on this service, would be an ideal platform to host some... currently no though.
--how about store sales, will there be any? seeing as they are really only paying for one game then copying it for you to play on a server.
Already have a few "steam" sales, pretty great values too.
--how about game updates, can i expect that are games updated same day as when the publishers releases the update? (seeing as i have no control over this i think).
Yeah, they said this is the advantage of having a service like this, updates only need to be applied to the servers so it's pretty day-one.
--what about single player games i don't want updated if an update comes, do i have any control over this?
Seems like no control over this at all.
--how about sound and or headphone support? (sometimes i want to play games really loud at night without waking anyone up so i put in the headphones and jam on!)
On the pc/mac end, of course its up to your setup. On console end, there is a headphone jack, but again its up to your sound system setup.
--hacking, how secure is the system and serice from cheaters, exploiters, identity thieves?
We will see in the future as this service becomes more popular...
For anyone wanted to keep updated with their promotions and stuff, either visit their website or sign up for their newsletter.. thats where they announce the game sales/service updates etc.
