However, I haven't played the game beyond the demo so there's still hope the Darklings feature in a more interesting way - although the fact that they aren't mentioned in the review is worrisome.
Short campaign means I probably won't be spending $60 on it but will definitely pik it up when it drops a little bit. I want to support tha developers and the franchise but I"m getting the impression it won't be worth the $60 to ME
Hopefully Binary Domain and Syndicate turn out well - dying for a new game. I loved the BD demo gameplay. Sort reminded my of Vanquish without the acrobatics. IF the full game contains enough variety in enemy types and mini-boss/boss encounters should be a fun romp.
Suprised Tara didn't review this... are we going to get a review from her on the dtoid show?
I wish we had more games that couldn't be completed over a weekend. At least developers aren't making the games artificially hard to keep us playing forever.
Thanks for the review!

Maybe for the summer, then I can repeat five years ago.
I didn't "get" the first one at all... it didn't draw me in and I got bored with it in the first couple of hours. This seems like a solid rental, though.
@mix: "I enjoyed the demo and NEED to finish the first one, I will pick this up brand spanking new to appease the dev team, but after a price drop."
I applaud you, mix because that's exactly what I do as well. I never buy games at full price anymore, however, I still fully support the developer by buying new. If only more people did this, we would have never had to deal with online passes in the first place.
For example, Skyrim is $39.99 this week on Steam. Time to pick it up. Little late to the party? Sure. Does that take away from the experience at all? Nope. I've been drowning in new games as it is(I'm just barely getting to Dragon Age for instance) and I've got the Diablo 3, Natural Selection 2 and Super Monday Night Combat BETA's all at once. VIDEOGAMES.
Would never buy the first one based on its demo, but this one's on my wishlist as a "one day" purchase.
Hope that doesn't come off too jerky. Just trying to give feedback to be constructive.
Game is pretty much a must buy for me although I am annoyed that this game falls under the "charge Australians a 100% surcharge" policy some dick publishers have on steam. Gotta organise a US friend to buy for me :P
Oh and 6 hour campaigns are perfect for my lifestyle so I'm happy to hear it's been kept tight.
I know 60 bucks is a lot, but c'mon. I know you've bought much worse.
I dug what I played of the first Darkness, and I'm planning on going back to it at some point. I'm not a fan of Digital Extremes' work usually - they always make games that are in that "fun, but who gives a shit" category, where the basic mechanics are fun for a little while, but there's just nothing else there, you know? So I was worried. But I downloaded the demo anyway, because who knows, right?
I literally had to turn it off. The thing is, that's not because it was bad or mediocre. It was actually very good! Digital Extremes did a fantastic job in a lot of ways. The shooting felt solid, the voice work was terrific, and the mechanics all worked really well. It's just that there was so much... much there. It didn't shock me so much as exhaust me. It was just VIOLENCEBLOODMURDERBLOODAAAAAAASCREEEEEAAAMS on repeat over and over, to the point that I quit and played Rayman instead. XD
It was almost like the sounds and voice work and blah were too well-done. It probably doesn't help that I have a really good sound system. It reminded me of cranking up the headphones to listen to really good death metal; I can understand intellectually why a given death metal band is good at what it does, but I just end up dizzy and confused and angry after about a minute of the stuff. Makes me feel close-minded not to like it, or (as with Darkness II) like Grandpa Hieronymous Hossenfeffer, the prudiest prude in Prudeville.
That said, I know demos can sometimes be deceptive. Is the full game pretty much wall-to-wall screaming and murder and blah, or is it more evenly spaced with moments of emotion and narrative and such?
I'd have jumped at $60 if Starbreeze were behind this, but Syndicate looks awesome so they get my money.
