Release a free patch to add the balancing changes to SSFIV. Then, the two can easily be played together online minus the new characters.
This "choose your version" bullshit is stupid beyond belief.
And this review is perfectly fine. I play fighting games a ton and I really don't WANT to buy this upgrade since the new characters are stupid and uninspired choices that don't add ANYTHING to the game as a whole, but I'm going to have to if I want to stay competitive.
Really though, there's hardly any incentive here for me since my favorite characters have been nerfed as well. I might have to spend $15 just to get my ass kicked more frequently.
Why on earth would anyone even consider buying AE retail if they already own SSFIV? Not even worth mentioning this.
You talking about Vector graphics display or what? It's like the first time I've ever heard the term in any street fighter post.
As for the review score, that's fine.
Anycase, nice to see Brad again.
@mowdownjoe like Jim Brad writes for several sites. Tbh I don't even see his name on gb much since they hired Patrick Klepick.
I'll pick it up. I'm not a particularly advanced fighter but I like to try and keep up on this stuff. I keep meaning to try out Dtoid Fights, hopefully the release of AE spurs some movement there.
i hear that a lot of current characters are nerfed, while the new ones are really over-powered.
now it's been overshadow by other fighting games like SF X Tekken. KOF XIII, Soul Calibur V and more :P
Do I think they could have done more with this? Hell, yes. No trials or training modes for the new characters sucks. It just outright screams laziness. Also, a proper tutorial for any Street Fighter game, as cool as it would be, will never be made. Capcom wants you to decipher their games, not learn them, and this will end up hurting not only them, but the fighting game scene in the long run.
That beings aid anybody still playing probably already intends to pick up AE anyway.
@oberoi
The problem is that in other reviews on Destructoid, they'll give people who like/know/enjoy specific games the reviews. Take Jim for example, any time there's a dynasty warriors or Aliens game, he gets the review. Whenever there's a sports game, Samit gets the review. When Topher still worked here he'd do shmups, etc etc etc.
The problem here is that this review comes from someone who isn't serious about fighters, something that isn't immediately apparent. I don't think it matters too much in *this* case since serious players already know if they want this or not.
Total and utter garbage.
3so seems to have a pretty comprehensive training mode... and sf4 has trials. it is pretty lazy to not add some in for the 4 new guys, and maybe update the trials for previous dudes.
He's clearly not interested on the level one would be to download/purchase the AE update early in the first place, and if he isn't, what's the point of this review?
It just comes off disinterested at best, and apathetic at worst. Anyone saying "Serious gamers already know" is just giving him an excuse for this, because really, you can apply that reasoning to fans of any genre of any game reviewed on this site and they all showed off a better level of detail and passion than this blurb did.
In fact, all the previews leading up to this "review" were more comprehensive and enjoyable reads than this. Bad form.

Brad shouldn't be asked to give a positive review just because people learned the differences between the twin, he's right, for the average person it's gonna look like a hack job.
This is coming from a forumite that plays AE almost religiously at this point. I love it. Guy is better know, Evil Ryu is mad fun, and now Guile isn't retarded anymore. But I can't recommend spending 15 dollars for a couple tweaks that wont really change the way a casual will play, and 4 characters that literally look the same in pairs.
This is a must for anyone that does play competitive.
Now for people that doesn't, this is an unecessary DLC.
For the characthers, 2 more shotos aren't a big addition to the roster.
But Yun and Yang carry their own style of fight. They are good additions to the roster.
This addon is honestly AMAZING, and worth every penny. A complete (and in some cases needed) rebalance of the cast and 4 new, completely realized character and some additional online features for only $15? Excellent value.
This update has dynamically changed the game overall, the overly defensive matches are gone in favor or raw offensive matches. Sure, you can still pick Guile and turtle it up, but it's not nearly as effective, let alone if you're fighting a character like Yun or Yang.
And to say the disc release is a joke is foolish, considering who it's intended for. That being people who don't own SSFIV. SSFIV is $40 alone, buy the disc release of AE and you get all of that plus the extra $15 of content basically for free.
As has been said in other comments, this review is kind of a joke.
its really nice to see brad back on destructoid.
You sir are a top notch reporter I say!
All sarcasm aside, the real point of AE was balance, of which a great deal was applied, you numpty.
