If I hadn't been reviewing so many of them lately, I would have thought the shoot-em-up genre was dead. Apparently I was wrong as I've reviewed more games from this genre than any other over the last six months. Strania - The Stella Machina is the latest title that I've had the opportunity to play and it's currently available on Xbox Live for 800 Microsoft Points.
Why it's so expensive I do not know.

Strania – The Stella Machina (XBLA)
Developer: G. Rev
Publisher: Microsoft
Released: March 30th, 2011
MSRP: 800 Microsoft Points or $10
When you fire up this title for the first time you're greeted with a typical splash screen. You can select the different modes, and options, but the distinct lack of music is instantly off putting. As you navigate the menu, you're welcomed with harsh noises letting you know that you've moved the cursor. This is your first impression of the game, and the only explanation I can come up with is that they had to rush and throw it together.
This amateurish first impression is covering up what amounts to an average shooter. The hook of the title is that you can get some unique power ups like a sword that you can slice through enemies with, but the other items are fairly average like a spread shot, side shot, laser, and more.

Strania's next mistake is that it uses the "screw-you-over system." If you have an awesome weapon combination, and a new item comes onto the screen that's awful, you need to avoid it at all costs. If you even touch it, your superior combo will be replaced with what could be a mess. There were many times that I was flying around with a nice spread shot side gun combo only to have one of the items replaced with a sword. I hate it when shooters do this.
The difficulty level is also quite high. You get a maximum of 3 lives, and even if you have continues turned on they seem to do nothing. I tried to set my lives to 3 with a continue option turned on, but once I go through my 3 lives the game would just end. Either I'm an idiot, or the continue functionality does not work.

It's a struggle to find them, but there are a few plus points to note. One area that's impressive is the visuals. There are mini-action moments spread throughout the game, including explosions that erupt in the background as the camera spins around your 3D character before he flies toward the camera. There are also showdowns where an enemy will be highlighted in the distance before tackling the player head-on. These little moments set alongside some pretty level design make up the games biggest strengths. It's just a shame that the rest of the product feels a bit flat.
Even the sound is bland. There are no beats that will stick out in your mind, and the different sounds of the weapons all mush together to make an unimpressive stew of mediocrity. The fact that the music just ends after a level leaving you with nothing but the sound of your mech jets should tell you that someone was being lazy. There should be some kind of victory sequence tune, but it isn't present.

Multiplayer is non-existent. There's an option for it on the main menu, and while local multiplayer works fine allowing you to team up with a friend to take down the bad guys, the online functionality is broken. If you want to go online there's little to no chance that you'll find a game. If there are fans of the game reading this, I'm sorry, but no one is playing Strania. You'll just have to call up a buddy to pick up a controller and sit next to you if you want some co-op action.
I've gotten some enjoyment out of the shooters that have appeared on Xbox Live Arcade as of late, but this one just fell flat. It uses an outdated weapon changing system that's more annoying than useful, doesn't do enough to engage the player in combat, and feels unfinished. If Strania had some more time to add some additional touches I think there could be a decent shooter here. As it stands now, I'll have to tell you to pass on it.
yeah i think they should do what Hard Corps did, add a button that let's you carry multiple weapons. you can only override your weapon if you picked a new one while a weapon is equipped.
the difficulty is part of shump, though i don't know how cheap this game is. ehh i don't have a 360 to picked this up, will pick Mamorukun though ^^
Credits are what you're looking for. Turning continues on lets you use credits.
I remember years ago seeing footage and gameplay of a gundam game for the 360. It had a cockpit view and a out of mecha play , I believe it was based off of the one year war. It was incredibly promising but I believe it was scrapped because of space on the discs but then later in 06 work started again . The game released almost gutted of most frill thrown in and graphics were incredibly dulled down, it finally released in 08 operation Troy in japan with no plans of an import to the us ( to my knowledge ). Incredibly sad but you can still find awesome scraps on the net about it.
make it Zone of the Enders gameplay, and include Gundam, ZOE, Xenosaga, Armored Core, Ace Another Century, and Super Robot wars. and you have the best mecha game ever made :P
DJ Incompetant is also more than correct. You can continue. The reviewer maybe mistaking lives for continues though. The 'armour' actually counts as a life, and when you lose all your armour and explode, if you then respawn at the start of a section then -that- is a continue.
As for not being able to dodge weapons, I really don't get that either. They don't exactly bounce around the screen. You -can- pass through them while swinging a sword to avoid picking them up, but that's more of an intermediate tip. Frankly, they just fall straight down or stay in the exact same place you opened them. If you can dodge the bullets, you can dodge the power ups.
Calling the multiplayer broken however is a serious stretch. Rather, there may simply not being people online to play with. I had great fun playing 'Clash of Heroes' today, but that was with the only other human being I could find online playing it at the same time as me. I would agree if the online disconnected a lot or lagged out but.. not being matchmade in an XBLA exclusive Japanese G.Rev shmup isn't that surprising.
Also the training mode wasn't mentioned at all either. Perfect for working out your strategy in taking out enemies around corners and dodging... weapons... yeah.
Although its up to the reviewer if he likes the game or not, I really dont understand how he could make such an issue about having to dodge power ups if he doesnt want them. For a shmup with a power up items having to dodge unwanted power ups is a common feature of the genre (eg Raiden) its just that its rare to see a shmup with power ups in it nowadays so ppl forget this fact.
As for calling the online mode broken, no it isnt its just that no one is using it, which is understandable as in most shmups co-op actually spoils the game by sometimesmaking it too easy or just breaking scoreplay. And as most of the hardcore players will be playing for score its rare theyll use co-op.
Shmups with their highscore leaderboards generally are single player affairs when it comes to serious & competative play. Only shmups that are specially designed for co-op are any good. EG twinkle star sprites, score rush and the upcoming Jamestown.
I get the feeling that the reviewer really isnt really into shmups as moaning about only 800msp for a professionally produced shmup is a dead give away. Any shmup fan who is used to paying full price for box shmups will see it as a bargin. And no we are not daft for paying top dollar for a retro game as its a case of paying extra for a quality game thats a niche product. Just like 2D platformer fans will pay top dollar for nintendos new 2D platformers like New super mario bros Wii, I dont see ppl moaning about the price of that title when its possible to play very simlar games for free.
Option 1
Then again the same is true for any gaming genre, yould have a FPS fan reviwing Bulletstorm, A RTS fan reviewing Starcraft 2, and if you had someone who might casually play a simple RTS every now and again making a starcraft 2 review the comment section like me would be full of annoying dicks like me shooting holes through the article.
If you think this is an average shooter, I'd hate to see what your opinion of a bad shooter is.
