Stacking: The Lost Hobo King

Review: Stacking: The Lost Hobo King DLC

5:00 PM on 04.05.2011 // Conrad Zimmerman

Little Charlie Blackmore may have succeeded in rescuing his doll family from the evil baron, but his adventures are not yet over. A new quest for the smallest Matryoska doll arrives this week on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, The Great Hobo King

In this expansion to Stacking, Charlie travels to the kingdom of Camelfoot on behalf of his friend Levi. This land is the home of the hobos but it has been without a ruler for some time. Levi's cousin Rufus qualifies by lineage but the shattered Hobo Crown must be reforged before he can take the throne. That's where the wee Charlie comes in.

The Lost Hobo King
Stacking: The Great Hobo King
Developer: Double Fine Productions
Publisher: THQ
Release Date: 4/5/2011 (XBLA: 4/6)
MSRP: $4.99 (400 MS points)

What we have here is basically an additional stage for Stacking, albeit a fairly small one. There are three new challenges in Camelfoot for Charlie to solve, all left behind by hobo mystics in days of yore, followed by a concluding puzzle that barely merits mention. Primary goals, as in the original game, have multiple ways to complete them with one offering a whopping six options.

The challenges aren't quite so challenging in The Lost Hobo King. The majority have at least one solution which should be readily apparent to just about anyone, let alone a player who has already had the experience of playing through the original game. Make no mistake, there are still some mighty strange methods that can succeed in challenges and discovering all the possibilities is not easy. If you get stuck, the progressive hint system from the original game is here again to give a nudge in the right direction.

The Lost Hobo King

The puzzles are simple, but Stacking is every bit as much about being a playground as it is about brainteasers. There are about twenty new dolls to control with (mostly) new abilities to experiment with. Testing all of those out, discovering the new Hi-Jinks and finding other ways they can interact is still delightful and pads out the content somewhat.

That said, The Lost Hobo King doesn't contain much of a value. It feels like something that was left on the cutting room floor for good reason instead of a complement to the original game. Players desperate for more Stacking will find that here but the experience doesn't measure up in the end.

Score: 6 -- Alright (6s may be slightly above average or simply inoffensive. Fans of the genre should enjoy them a bit, but a fair few will be left unfulfilled.)

Forget it

Amicable - A presentable but unmemorable time. Focusing on the bright spots helps, and I appreciate the effort, but I won't be playing this repeatedly.

If you haven't played Tales from the Borderlands yet, GO BUY IT! By far the funniest game I have ever played, and the characters and narrative are incredibly well written. Very few memes unlike BL2 by the way.

Played all of Life is Strange today in one sitting. Bloody hell. You should all play it. Only game this year to make me cry. Bravo developers. Possibly the most valuable thing I've ever bought for £10.

Last night, got farther than ever in Wasteland 2. This is my third playthrough-once thru beta, once through the orig version, now on Directors cut. Worth the restart, and it speaks highly of the game that I like it enough to do this. DAMONTA HERE I COME!

GUYS HELP I KEEP BUYING MORE AMIIBO. Today it was Little Mac, since he went back up on Gamestop's website. I probably would have gotten Captain Falcon as well if I wasn't already running a little short on cash.

50 hours in and I can safely say that Xenoblade is the best JRPG I've played in years. Should hopefully be finished in time for X too!

I have 34 games in my Steam queue alone, 4 on xbone, and a handful on handhelds. I have 3 days to make a dent. Time's up, let's do this!

Community Question: To make up for yesterday, I decided to ask a second Community Question today. Have you taken advantage of any Black Friday deals today? If so, what did you purchase? Feel free to share pictures of your spoils, if you have any.

Black Friday is getting to me. All these games I kinda, maybe want that are at anywhere between respectable and deep discounts, but I'm not sure if I want to bite. I'm wondering if Godzilla's worth $12? After checking review scores, I'm not sure.

Black Friday slowly seems to creep its way onto Continental Europe, but I'm not complaining! I managed to get my grubby little paws on a new physical copy of The Wonderful 101 for €20! Thanks, America!

Community Question: Since I missed yesterday, I am going to do something a little different today. Are there any questions you would like to ask me for a change? If so, please feel free. I may add a second Community Question later today, as well.

While partially responsible for one of the biggest jokes in the metal, Cold Lake by Celtic Frost, Curt Bryant is doing the soundtrack to the game Slain!. I'm digging the shitty garage band vibe.
