I tried to read your comment, but all I saw was "WAAAAAAH, he has an opinion that differs from my own!"
This may surprise you, but people are allowed to have different tastes.
This is a sign or something.
Other than Street Fighter 4 Dimps did: Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3, Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic Colours DS, Sonic Generations 3DS, Sonic 4: Ep.1 (with Sonic Team), Sonic Unleashed Wii/PS2 Daytime stages.
Little bit less odd.

Well I was going to buy this instantly, I might now wait for a sale. I usually enjoy all of the Sonic games (besides 2006 and Werehog Unleashed) unlike most Sonic fans who really just seem hell bent on having the first 3 games released over and over and over and over (Not saying that's Jim btw). But it's a shame they couldn't hit a high note with Ep.2
I really think their problem is including Dimps in the development, don't get me wrong I love Dimps Sonic games and they're basically the best Sonic games released post-Sonic Adventure 2 (other than Generations) but Dimps Sonic is not Gensis Sonic and has never felt anything like it and so it wasn't going to work in the first place.
i'll wait til i play it myself, even if it was rated a 10.
sonic colors and sonic generations were 2 of the best games of this generation... sonic 4 was okay, but the physics and lack of anything new or interesting level design wise is what killed that game for me. the levels seem to be a lot more interesting in this game, and if the physics have improved.. then i'll probably end up enjoying this game.
sonic cd and sonic adventure are two of my favorite games in the series and i know jim trashes them regularly.. so i already know where i stand when i read a review of a sonic game by him.
crit·ic
noun
1.
a person who judges, evaluates, or criticizes:
2.
a person who judges, evaluates, or analyzes literary or artistic works, dramatic or musical performances, or the like, especially for a newspaper or magazine.
3.
a person who tends too readily to make captious, trivial, or harsh judgments; faultfinder.
A critic by it's very definition is critical of shortcomings.
It's not to be your personal "Tell you what you want to hear" guide.
I wouldn't consider any game reviewer to even be a critic. They are far too lenient.
Key Phase "Worth" listening to.
Fun fact fellow Sonic gamers, are you over the age of 21?
Let's play the Sonic Spring Booster Drinking game!
Take a drink every time you use a booster and spring :D
When you think about it this generation Sonic Team have given us (in terms of core Sonic games):
Sonic 2006 - shit
Sonic Unleashed - Daytime stages were great, nightime... depends on your opinion
Sonic 4 Ep.1 - average
Sonic Colours - great
Sonic Generations - amazing
Then if you want to move away from core titles:
Sonic and the Secret Rings - average
Sonic and the Black Knight - I found it better than Secret Rings
Sonic Free Riders - I've heard it's meant to be crap
It's not exactly the end of the world.
I think that the games are fine being with Sonic Team but they just need to develop LESS games per generation so as to focus more on a single title rather than pumping them out.
You mention Generations, though it's kind of hard to fuck up a best of game with a history as rich as Sonic's. For me Colors just felt like more of the same. I love Sonic, but I don't feel like Sonic Team's heart is in it anymore. I would rather see what some fresh blood can do with Sonic.
But this one... nothing. I even wound up replacing a lot of the music with music from the Saturn Sonic 3D Blast/Flicky's Island because how insufferable the music overall got at times.
Insufferable soundtrack all around. In a Sonic game. That's a rarity in and of itself.
I'd say if Sonic fans want to give this game a spin, wait until it goes on sale. Sega's asking price of $10-$15 is a bit excessive for something so underwhelming a final product.
Yea. I fucking said it. Somebody had to. Sonic fans, please join the Resident Evil fans in that corner over there. Thanks.
I stand by the fact that Sonic Team just needs to stop trying to pump out so many Sonic games per gen, and I too would be interested to see what someone other than ST or Dimps could do with the series.
Maybe by involving another team SEGA could satisfy it's need to produce so many Sonic games, all the while giving each team a long enough development cycle to make something truly awesome.
Just goes to show 'fans' don't know what the fuck they want. These people didn't want the genesis sonic back, they wanted to be enraptured by something in the same way they were when they were 8, and that's simply an impossible ask.
I guess wanting more ep 1 but with sonic 2 special stages and some tails action was just too much =[
Sonic Team while not perfect would not bungle a 2D game like this. I lay the blame on Dimps.
I'm pretty sure the last positive review Jim gave something that wasn't indie shit was in 2010.
Whatever, if Jim hates it, I'm buying it.
@ Iyellalot- I'm glad you came right out and said what most people just dance around or otherwise try to mask.
If you look in these comments, you'll see a lot of people who share Jim's opinion of Sonic 4. They come off as rational. You'll also see people who are criticizing his writing style, the basis for his opinions, the score he chose, or even accusing him of "lying" in this review for "attention".
What these people are trying to say is "I don't share your opinion and it makes me angry", but they are saying it in the most round about, indirect, mean spirited way.
So again, thank you for just coming out and saying it. I hope the rest learn a thing or two from you.
As much as I love the genesis games I really don't want them to make levels inspired by them, it's what made the first feel so flat to me, they felt like things we've seen in Sonic games before a lot, give me something fresh and new damn it!
Shame since I really didn't like Generations and looks like I won't be finding any enjoyment in the series any time soon, bummer!
I just wanna say that your review is very accurate and i'm surprised you noticed alot of flaws which I didn't think non sonic fans would be able to recognize. I was very upset last year with episode 1 so I do not agree with that review at all, but I don't care much about the franchise since then so to me there is no emotion attached to the trainwreck anymore. I do very much compliment your accuracy in this review. Very well written and I think you described the game's flaws very well.
Jim Sterling should remind us (and himself) that he hates Sonic 1 and Sonic 3&K
