You have to love when people buy these retro games on their iPhone with a burst of nostalgia, only to realize the controls suck and will promptly be buried behind 5 pages of worthwhile apps.

Bleh, I'm not surprised. Platforming games, especially ones that require fast and precise input will be horrible on the iPhone.. I should have learned that lesson from buying EWJ on it, but it was only a dollar. I suppose for people who need the nostalgia rush should wait till it goes down to that.
Makes me wonder if it's still just the rom running in a shoddy emulator. Most likely is, though some of those collision bugs sound strange. Aquatic Ruin should be stable for all intents.

xzyliac, where on earth did you get the idea that fag ever meant 'old people'? i can assure you it never did, sorry.
It depends where your from I imagine, in good ol' blighty (England) going for a fag or having a fag is entirely different to the way americans would use the term.
Actually, you could play the Genesis version on the Nomad if you really wanted it to be portable. The completely different Game Gear game was not the only option.
In Roald Dahl's autobiography, he talks about how at school, the prefects called the boys who they bossed around 'fags', which made me laugh when a prefect wanted his personal fag to go and warm up his toilet seat for him.

I love this, Jim. Thank you for pointing out that the iPhone's touch pad is absolutely no replacement for a proper D-Pad. ...or ANY D-pad.
No shit it's a bad port, what else would you expect from a platformer on the iPhone? Touch screens are cool and all, but they can't replace the feeling of a d-pad.
Please don't review iPhone games on Destructoid, they don't count as games. What did anyone expect of a port of sonic 2 on iPhone the first thing that came to my mind was horrible controls (which comes to my mind when i hear mention of any iPhone game) and overall a less than impressive port of a great game.

I sort of disagree with this review. I've been playing this port for a few days now (pretty much since the review was published) and I haven't noticed many problems with it. It does trend towards chop during initial startup and sprite-heavy scenes, but overall, its still Sonic 2 and still every bit enjoyable, especially on the go. I find the touchscreen controls to be better than most games that use the style, and the iphone/ipod touch (Im playing it on a Touch) looks great displaying the colorful Sonic 2 sprites.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with it -- or rather, I was expecting much worse. If you're a fan of Sonic 2, I can't find a reason to pass this one up... but maybe I like Sonic 2 more than most. :O
