as much as i want this game to succeed... that pretty much is an automatic turn off for this review.
1) The hero was unlikeable. He was a butt-faced thug, whose dialogue tried to paint him as some sensitive good at heart fella, but whose actions were a brutal butcher. His wardrobe choices sucked. Immersion failed here.
2) The friends were severely annoying. Keeping them entertained was a chore. The only decent one was Brucie, because he was hilarious. I don't know why they made Brucie into such a weakling putz in Ballad of Gay Tony.
3) Too much dark, dirty looking, and gray. Yes it would be real to show a dirty city, but certainly the first island you start on is a gray filthy mess. The color pallete washed together into a gray and brown blandness. It set the tone for the game.
4) No sense of humor. The other GTAs has fun side missions, full of humor. Remember the model shop in San Andreas? GTA 4 was a dreary drab serious mess.
Ballad of Gay Tony was the DLC that the original game should have been. The protagonist said funny lines. The quests were a better variety. It was overall much better and more in line with the previous games.
Also I was not trying to say that he described it as flawless and rather meant that (in my opinion!) to achieve this "crown" the game would got to have something really special that would bring the whole genre one step further or be "flawless".
Of course I am aware that it could be the best game ever and I will know if this is true or not when I finally played it and I am just guessing right now from what I can see that this does not look like a genre-defining game.
I have to admit that I am kinda biased by the GTA series because I really love Rockstars wit and writing and always think of it as a stroke of genius. I only disliked San Andreas back in the day because I did not like the setting as much as Vice City (God I love this game so much) and to me there was never a better open-world game in this generation than GTA4 even if it had its flaws.
Sleeping Dogs just reminds me of a game like "Saboteur", a really good game but nothing more. But to see if this is true I will have to play it for myself and I hope you now understand what I wanted to say initially.
ugh, i did get paid, maybe ill just get both.....
Hopefully, the game picks up, because I'm at about the two hour mark and it's not even better than SR the third..
will wait for next year for GOTY edition though, too many games to play.
Read Jim's review of Darksider's 2 to learn how to do it properly. Rather than compare the thing to Zelda or any other game that's similar, he got on with the game.
LEARN OH ROOKIE, YE
Haven't installed the high-res texture pack, though, so.
Hard pressed to disagree otherwise. Good review.
Otherwise, Rockstar was already completely eclipsed this generation by Saint's Row 2. And their humor is tiresome unless you feel that "DERP Americans are all fat rednecks DERP" was still funny in 2008. And someone please explain to Edinburgh that "meant to," as they use it, is not in the American English vernacular. That phrase comes up in nearly every dialogue in Gay Tony.
Wait, (SLI)?
Fuck
When Watch Dogs comes out I'll post a picture of myself reading this review's comments.
Jim name dropped, yes. But the rest of his review wasn't loaded with comparison and contrasts, it wasn't a "Darksiders 2 vs. ____" post. The basis for your review begins with GTA and ends with it. I'm pretty sure it's possible to write a review without having to reference another game so much and write upon its own merits instead of pad it out as you love to do. That would take a bit more effort as a "writer" than piggybacking off the experience of a previous game.
Seriously, comparing the final mission to GTA's? Is that going to become your new standard for every open world game, comparison down to the very smallest detail like that? The ending was shitty. Okay, fair enough. But go for it, throw in another comparison to GTA 4, why not. BECAUSE REFERENCE.
Then again, perhaps that's your style. Also, calling a game dissapointing 4 years before you even actually played it.
GO FIGURE BRO LOLOLOL
The handling of the cars seems a little fake, after having gotten used to LA Noire. They're still fun though. I like how they included the ramming mechanic from Wheelman.
This game is basically a pastiche of about a dozen other games. Not just GTA and Saint's Row, but also Yakuza and Assassin's Creed and whatever else you might mention.
Which is not to say it isn't good. From what I can see, the critical consensus is that it does well on its own terms (with certain caveats). It is, however, *still a pastiche.* That being the case, comparing Sleeping Dogs to the other dozen games it takes all of its ideas from seems like one of those things that no good reviewer could possibly *not* do without looking like an oblivious ass.
In other words, since this game is basically a copy of a whole bunch of other games I like, I want to know how it stacks up next to those games before I buy it. Hence the review, which I thought worked well.
You're making too many references to one person's writing. And how many times are you going to namedrop Sterling to pad out your points? It's like Jim Sterling is the only writer you know.
LEARN 2 COMMENT BETTER, BRO. DERPITY DERP.
i'm a little concerned about my rig though, running the same CPU as used in the review, however i've been surviving on a single 560 for a while now, but if this game can't be maxed using a 580 i guess i'm going to fall short.
i guess if this is one of the first "next gen" titles in terms of graphics (skyrim is beautiful, but not quite on par with UE4 etc) perhaps it's time to upgrade...
Seriously...I tried Saint's Row 2 and had to quit after an hour because I have too much respect for myself to play something THAT BAD any longer.
