I couldn't agree any more and I kept thinking of those 3 games as I was playing. Said perfectly, Jimbo.
I'm surprised there have been so many 'meh' reviews as I thought the game was fantastic.
Also, why Singularity is dropping off the radar? I presume it's not a cash cow ready for milking. But that's just me. Or, you know, the fact that it directly competes with Call of Duty 6 Modern Warfare 2 (in that they're both FPS games on the same systems). >_>;
You open by saying it "is probably the best new shooter I've played all year." This dovetails nicely with the end: "Quite possibly the best new FPS of the year so far," which, while clearly positive, isn't exactly a firm endorsement. There so many qualifiers in that sentence they become exponents of each other. And yet, that's the last sentence before the glowing score, which by its nature offers no opportunity for qualification.
Very interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
thought it looked good from the start, glad it turned out well, and having just finished bioshock 2 all i want is more of the same :P
Otherwise, spot on review. Hope to see more from this series!
I was gonna say something to rerail the train of thought but the train crashed into a mountain. Sorry!
Seeing 75% of reviews saying a game is good or bad gives people something to go on. That opinion might be wrong for them. They might love a game everyone else hates or hate a game everyone else loves, but in general they'll probably be making more accurate choices when it comes to what games will suit their tastes.
Should Jim change his review? Of course not... He has his opinion, but at the same time it's also fair to say this review maybe an isolated case and what maybe a 9 to Jim won't be a 9 to a majority of people.
I don't think reviews scores should fall in line with each other but at the same time it's laughable to look at one score (Jim's in this case) and say that's the average opinion for this game.
But id have to take off one or two points because the campaign is short ~5 hours. After youve done the campaign there really isnt that much else so 7/10 seems reasonable
WHAT. you have to be kidding me! "do your research". so let me get this straight, the opinion of the masses is research to tell people what their opinions should be? you've really thrown yourself in a shithole here, dude. there are reviewers i trust and reviewers i don't. the people who give this a 6.0? people i don't trust.
I don't think anybody IS saying that.
And yeah, there might be some lower scores out there, but I'm sure many people find that they and Jim share similar tastes, which raises the validity of Jim's scores over others'. Sometimes you make even more accurate choices when you follow a select few reviewers of your preference, instead of averaging the reviews of the masses.
but now i know you are just being paid to give games unaccurate scores
looks i could come up with a list of the last 10 games you reviewed jim and if you compare the scores you gave to those games with the score on metacritic, there is always a huge difference of about 3 or even 4 points from the average
look i think this review is the best example of why your reviewing process is so... well BAD
you dont give games scores (or written reviews for that matter) according to their merits, you give scores related of what you personally think about them
whats the problem you say?
well you might find a game called "jim is great" amusing, however that doesnt means 99% of the earth population will think the same way
a review is supposed to give the customer an insight view of the product to help him make a buying decision
i know objectivity is a rare asset in humans but, COULD YOU ATLEAST TRY?!
for example, you dont seem to punish the game for a multiplayer that according to you is "imbalanced", "unapologetically silly", and "chaotic", you also didnt punish it for many of the general flaws in the main campaign, hell you didnt even mention how long is it
i found your review unaccurate and uninformative
For you, objectivity means copying the work of others to fall in line and make sure you don't rock the Metacritic averages. What a miserable, pathetic, thoroughly dishonest way to go about reviewing a game.
You'd make an awful reviewer, what with completely lacking a spine and everything.
As for this:
"you dont give games scores (or written reviews for that matter) according to their merits, you give scores related of what you personally think about them "
That's probably the funniest thing you've ever said. Shame the humor's unintentional.
The "evil communist" part is more evil human nature part, the impetus behind the research is the cold war however the story really focuses more on "A Sound of Thunder" premise.
Disclaimer
The basis behind the potshot at IGN so I dont get torn apart on my own arguments axe, is thus. I am not discounting IGNs reviews as propaganda simply saying that News Corp has a massive ungodly amount of commercial gravitas and investment in ventures all over the place. Thus as a cynic when someone invariably quotes IGN I cringe a little.
Some of you need to just fuck off to a website that has no problem toadying up to you and agreeing with your stupid opinions. The smart people who think for themselves and understand what videogame reviews are can stay on Destructoid.
Also, to whoever complained about Russian accents, they're not that bad. However, I love Metro 2033 and it's bad Russian accents probably desensitized me to it.
Why the hell do I love to live this game over, and over, and over.
Spending all my days pretending to be a japanese schoolgirl. Fuck. I'll never get laid again.
Will this game give me better chances of getting laid again?
And thus a 3/10 game was born. It's just a typical FPS within a wrapper.
Still, it's a good game, but will be categorized to me as "shit I played then never heard of again."
Quite liked quake 4 and wolfenstein so I will have to trust him on this.
I was honestly going to skip the game, but after reading this I believe I will give it a shot. Cheers for the heads up.
Though my wallet would disagree this plus War For Cybertron equals more of my money that Kotick & Co. shouldn't be getting. Also, SC2. *sigh*
