That is the problems I had, even the story that doesn't make much sense it's ok. Awesome review man.
The first one, above its minor control flaws, was an underrated gem in my book. This budget-priced sequel is even better. The controls have been tweaked and it feels even better to "shank". The game, to me, harkens back to old school games, when timing and skill is everything. Hell, I've been playing levels over and over again; the game is just too much fun.
Shank 2 is an above excellent downloadable game worthy of an 8. I suggest people give it a go and not miss out this time. It's a short, gory and fun ride. =)
While the game is certainly difficult, I never found it frustratingly so, as if I died or took a ton of damage in an area, it was because I didn't fight well enough, not because of bad controls, though I played on 360, not PC. Maybe that's your problem there.
I have found the combat to be deep, rewarding, fast-paced, fluid and incredibly fun. Makes me want to give the original Shank another look.
Also, I'm sorry, but the tone of the review is very dry and basic. I didn't feel the reviewer's personality coming across as is usually the case with Destructoid. I give the review a 5 out of 10, the game an 8.
I did the same exact thing. I want to play the first game over again and try to beat it this time but don't have the energy in me to play it over again. Shank 2 is miles better then the first game.
Very well said, man! The controls, this time around, are near perfect(I'm playing on PS3)... If I died a few times on a level it was certainly my fault, not the controls. Like retro games of the past, you just have to memorize the level's layout and boss patterns and just play better. Too many games hold the players hands nowadays. It's a shame gamers are not as patient as they once were. =/
Anyway, great game is great and I hope more people give it a try.
Also, your review of the review is hilarious. Game on, Leviathan902!
Story is meant to be flimsy -its themed on 80's movies cliches, just like its predecessor. No arcade brawler is all that deep. I really would hate to see how Double Dragon would be reviewed today, if this is going to be such a negative point.
Difficulty.. Its an arcade brawler. That pretty much sums up your entire difficulty issue before you even hit the controls. Its a throwback, and it says a lot about us if we don't know how to handle a tough game any more.
Controls.. What befuddles me the most is why this would even be reviewed on the PC, without a control pad. At that point you mine as well call this a fancy flash game on New Grounds. This really should come with a disclaimer saying a controller is necessary, in order to stave off negativity towards those who oddly decide to play it how it obviously wasn't intended to be played, because beyond that it just becomes a matter of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should".
Replay value.. Game gives you multiple skins, in fact I think it may give you more then you got in the first game -I can't remember- and each skin has different attributes from what I understand. But theres your replay value: trying the game with a different skin and forcing yourself to change up your play style -which, again, is a throw back to the games its tipping its hat too, because none of those games had replay value beyond trying the next character, and its playstyle. The idea that there needs to be oodles or re-playability isn't wrong in many situations in gaming, but its misplaced in this case.
Also, I wanted to add, and this maybe the thing that rubbed me the wrong way the most: I don't like the implication that just because a game isn't an RPG, that it can't possibly have a good, deep, story. This is a terrible sentiment for any writer to include in a review. For one thing, there's plenty of crappy stories in RPG's out there. But also, if that were the case, then the industry would be in some major trouble, and would have been a long time before this game.
For $10 this is a great game.
I am personally having a blast with this game. Grindhouse side scrolling brawler that handles well and gives you unlocks for you and your friend to use in a Horde multiplayer that DOESN'T get boring after the 5th wave, it's awesome.
If you even liked the first one, at least download the demo for the second one. Just so much damn fun to be had. Best 10 bucks I have spent on an arcade game in a long time.
