Good review.
jimmy, you messed up the scores
serious sam - 4.5
assasins creed 2 - 8
its an understandable mistake tough
"Whether you have a gaming PC or Xbox Live, it's highly recommended that you pick this one up."
Now that you have acquired your "Gaming Rig" and have become a PC Elitist, that sentence should have come out as:
"This game is an easy purchase on the PC, but if you are planning on purchasing it on the Xbox Live Arcade, hold back and buy a gaming PC you dirty piece of shit."
Tsk, tsk, looks like someone needs to study the "Big 'Ol Book of PC Elitism" a bit more, eh?
Also, Jimster I can't believe the score you gave this, Serious Sam may have flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage to what is a supreme title. A definite 9/10 you biased biased man you.
Not necessarily saying SS is better than AC2 in graphics or gameplay or any specific category. But I'm just guessing.
Apples are delicious and horses are smelly and kick people? Wait, what were we arguing about again?
Oh and also... obligatory mention of Assassin's Creed 2, just for Jim.
Here's the deal. Games are about having fun. Game reviewers are gamers who play games and then tell you if they're fun. AC2 was not fun because it was repetitive. This game may be repetitive, but it's fun.
At the end of the day, Jim thinks this game was more fun than AC2, so it got a higher score.
Does that make sense?
no, u r rong jim gave ac2 a bad score becuz he obviuzly likez it up the but
[/sarcasm]
Anyway, really, you can't compare a game like Serious Sam, where it's about the action and the core gameplay, to a game like Assassin's Creed 2, where it's about the satisfying assassinations (which, albeit, are few and far between, from what I played of the first game) and the intriguing plot.
Apples to oranges, people.
I disagree with it on many fronts.
I'll demo Serious Sam on Wed.
But excellent review Jim. I'm not a fan of newer FPS games, but I can play old school ones--I might actually buy this now!
wait...
that sounds wrong :-)
I'll be picking it up for sure :-) I've got the originals, the xbox version so I just get this one to complete the chain and blast stuff again :-)
You are absolutely right. The community should be ashamed of itself for thinking Assassin's Creed 2 was a in any way fun and not repetitive. Obviously it was not fun and anyone who thinks otherwise is some sort of fucktard.
For Jim Sterling is Jesus Tittie-fucking Christ and his word is the word of the Lord. May we bow down unto our knees and take his almighty cock into our throats.
NOT END SARCASM.
Fun is subjective... some people find intense reality simulations fun, some people find jumping around on a 2D plane fun... depends on the user.
The important thing to remember with Jim's reviews, and perhaps almost all reviews, is that he writes them purely from his opinion. He is not subjectively weighing the merits of Assassin's Creed 2 or Serious Sam HD, he is saying "hey I loved this game" and "this game was not for me." I hated his reviews until it was made clear to me he makes no bones about it, he reviews purely based on his enjoyment factor, and it is certainly easy to believe some people just don't like Assassin's Creed.
The real problem lies in people who see the low score and then say "oh the game sucks, oh well." You have to realize you might have a completely different opinion of it and read the review thoroughly to see WHY he hated it, and compare that to your priorities.
Serious Sam is awesome fun. Stupid, mindnumbing, but awesome fun. I remember playing through 2nd Encounter with some buddys in one sitting. Brains melted.
-> Perfect review, as it captures just that. Thanks.
Didn't like Serious Sam 2 though. They just went overboard with that.
To some extent, this is the case with all reviews. No matter how much of an objective fassade the reviewer is putting up. Reviews are opinions, opinions are subjective. That's not even debatable.
Just think of it. You can't measure something as subjective as "fun" in an objective way. What you can measure is facts. Like how many polygons are used for the main character's nose. But who's interested in that?
I was hoping someone would mention that so I could explain.
Serious Sam is a horse, as horses personify the entire FPS genre. Awesome FPSs like Left 4 Dead are the Grand National winning steeds. Games like Serious Sam are a bit retarded but can still be used for glue, therefore contirbute to society.
AC2 is an apple, which is a bit more high-brow then a smelly horse. When you get a good apple, there's nothing better, but if you get a rotten apple full of worms, there's no saving it. AC2 was 3 parts good apple to 4 parts bad.
My point is, even the most simplest horse can be useful, whereas a bad apple never is.
Man that was contrived.
I am not responsible for the words that people choose to accept into their own brains.
I think some reviewers attempt to review for the "common man" and try and take as subjective as possibly look on things. Whether those reviews are useful is up to the reader I would guess.
I don't have a problem with opinions guiding reviews, I just think if you come at them that way then they shouldn't have scores. A score is a defined and measured statement of quality that is used to compare one item to another... a processor speed, a test grade, what-have-you. By saying reviews are opinion-based and not objective it removes the merits of a score in my opinion, hell most sites like this specifically state you cannot compare scores between games, which really is the entire purpose of a score to begin with.
I am all for reviews based on reviewer opinion, and you read the review and base your reaction on your own interests. I just don't think a game should have a pointless score attached to it at the end then, one used on Metacritic to evaluate the game overall and compare it with other games. You can't quantify opinion.
Well, if you want to nitpick, you could also state that the score is just how highly the reviewer regards the game in his own fun-o-meter. That's pretty much what it is, right? Bummer is, that most people don't use their brains. Boom, you got those immensly stupid score discussions.
So yeah, I agree with you on that. Reviews would be way better off without the score. But sadly, I believe getting rid of the score would be pretty risky from a business standpoint. Most people don't like reading too much. Scroll down WHAT 4,5 NERD RAGE, and done.
I guess clicks/pageviews would really take a hit if you actually did remove that stuff. That may be one reason why dtoid keeps the number attached to it, and who can blame them. ;)
