But a review score is a quantified opinion. One guy, or a group of guys, sat around a table and decide what number to give a game. In their opinion, that game scored that much. A full review explains why that game got the score it got. It's all opinion.
The only way you can get a review without an opinion is a simple list of facts about what the game does and does not do. That's not a review. And it's certainly not an entertaining read.
Oh, I agree completely, and I know why they give scores, I just wish they didn't have to.
@ Jim
I get that, but the score still conveys more resolute judgement than I think a subjective review can really claim, in my opinion. It's a simple solution to solve, I just tend to ignore the numbers, but when you have things like metacritic and EA giving bonuses or greenlighting sequels based on metacritic, it just seems inaccurate and flawed to me.
Of course without metacritic all they would have is sales and forums, and bad games sell well, and good games have endless forum complaints, so who knows. I have no better alternative, I just get annoyed with the flaws. It's like capitalism that way.
I see what you're saying here. I just don't think it's a big deal. As readers, you've all got the choice -- read the text, ignore the number, look at the number, ignore the text, read both or ignore both. Whatever happens on Metacritic and with publishers, well, that's their business.
Serious Sam HD looks pretty fun for co-op. XBLA time baby!
This is the official review for Assassin's Creed 2.
Hahaha.
Loved the original, the first FPS I ever played through.
"The only way to get an objective review is to read a game's FAQ. A real review is based on opinions, and if you can't accept that, don't read reviews. Simple as that.
I am not responsible for the words that people choose to accept into their own brains."
alright jim, then why didnt you say something like "assasins creed 2 is GAY" and keep the same score
at the end of the day it would be just your opinion and the damage would be the same
now you could say "BUTZ MY INTEGRITY AS A REVIEWER!?!?"
if a reviewer is someone whos work is based completely on subjectivity then your integrity is as fragile as an opinion
now i dont give a rat's ass about AC2, i just wanted to point out, reviewers, REVIEW games based on its merits, theres a level of subjectiveness but their not as banal as opinions
personally i like your writing regardless as i mentioned before. what ticks me off though right now is that i believe the comments policy says "Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else."
and your comment "Stop being babies and get over it." and "I am not responsible for the words that people choose to accept into their own brains" are not very respctful now are they jim.. for shame ... way to follow your own rules ... ;)
I lol'ed at "There are big guns. There are big monsters. The big monsters need to be shot with the big guns." But that's all there is to this game. I don't fully understand why, but Serious Sam is just loads of fun.
Single player is really hard. I bet Chuck Norris couldn't beat this game on "mental" difficulty.
Btw: I just played throught he whole game with 10 dudes online coop. Holy **** was that awesome. We had the unlimited ammo option on, so no problems with ammo. :D
Nothing more awesome than when a big enemy spawns and 10 streams of bullet/green laser simultaneously lock onto him and take him down in 10 seconds
1) Go complain in the comment section belonging to that review. I'm SERIOUS!
2) If you want a SERIOUS impression about a game from a review, read the text, don't just focus on the numbers. Numbers are just numbers, but text.. that's SERIOUS business.
@Jim:
Don't let yourself be bothered by those guys. While I have to admit that I can't play SS:HD for more than 2 hours (too much BOOOM) I would always prefer it to AC2. Nothing beats cooperatively mowing down hundreds of enemies with a minigun and a gun that shoots exploding cannonballs!
@ sauceatron: I agree. I like numberless reviews.
I don't hold a thing against them for it, it's brutally easy to just look right past the score and go on with your life if you're unstable enough to freak out about a review score.
Second, destructoid has always been fair with their review scale. A 4.5 on destructoid truly means that it was slightly below average, as opposed to a 4.5 on gamespot meaning absolutely terrible.
